Depressed with no one to talk to

  • My dad is sexually abusing me. How can I tell my mom?
I'm depressed. I know I am. I looked up the symptoms and I have just about all of them. I'm not going to kill myself, because that would be unfair to my family, but I really don't want to deal with life anymore.

When I try to talk about my feelings with my mom, she says that it's because she is a bad parent and she's sorry, but that I should try to be happier. I need help and I can't talk to anyone.

Hey, hon. I’m sorry that you’re dealing with such a tough time. But it’s great that you are in touch with your feelings and trying to do something to improve the situation.

Talking to someone about what’s getting’ ya down is def the way to go. If your mom can’t hear it, then try chatting with your school counselor, your doctor or another trusted adult. You do need to seek help, and talking with an adult who can hear what you’re going through and guide you in the right direction is essential.

You deserve to be happy and enjoy school, make friends and just be the great girl you are. After you’ve had the chance to talk with someone about how you’re feeling, you might want to try writing a letter to your mom. It sounds like it’s really tough for her to hear what you’re going through, but maybe if you were to write down your feelings and explain that trying to cheer up is not working, her emotions wouldn't cloud her ability to see the situation for what it is.

Good luck girl—I know you'll find some help. Also try these resources: http://www.teendepression.org/, http://www.teen-depression.info/, http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/mental_health/depression.html. And you can try this teen help line either online or by phone: http://teenlineonline.org/teens/.

MOD
Wen I was little I could't sleep with any unfinished task. I had #s I luved like 3 (complete #s), #s I didn't trust/like (really any even #). I've had the symptoms of OCD since I could count nd as I got older my impulses stressed me out more. Tong My parents made fun of me nd until now I nevr knew wat OCD was. I have my little "rituals" where I do things over and over again until they feel right (blinking, typing, cleaning, etc). I even vacuum my room evry day I can nd if I don't it feels so gross! I hate it! It stresses me out. I take online tests, look up the symptoms (of course I have all of them) but now evrytime I bring it up2 my parents they say they were "just joking" nd that I don't have it. Now I hate opening up so I try nd keep quiet 'bout it nd bottle up my stress. Idk if it HAS2 b only hereditary cz i'm so sure neither of my parents have it... like, I wnt2 b diagnosed properly but I cn't go2 the Dr.'s by myself nd dn't rlly wnna drag my parents in2 it. Tong Any help??

Hey girl,

You know as well as I do that bottling up all that stress and bad feelings is NOT healthy, so let it out! Try keeping a journal and write down everything you feel and the rituals you find yourself following. Give each entry a date/time and then you'll be able to look back and see all the symptoms you're showing. OCD isn't hereditary so this has nothing to do with your parents - but, by going to the doctor and getting diagnosed one way or the other, you'll be able to start overcoming it and living your life more freely! If your parents continue to resist, just sit them down and tell them this in a serious manner. Let them know how much it means to you that you figure out what is wrong and I'm sure they'll come around.

Moderators,

Hey girl,

Just to be clear - bipolar disorder isn't a type of depression.  It sounds to me like you are just a girl with a lot of struggles.  First, it's really important to stop comparing yourself to others.  You are different and unique (in a good way!), so there's no comparison.  But it's also really important that you reach out to an adult you trust - parent, teacher, counselor - about how you feel.  You can get through this, so take care of yourself and things can get better.  xoxo
