Busting bully behavior

Check these out, too...

  • What freaks you out? Spill the deets!
  • Words to remember when life gets scary
  • Bullies on the bus
  • Bullied by teacher? Yep, it totally happens--tell us your story
  • Get those bullies out of your head: Tune out the torturers
I go to a school where there’s this one girl who made me mad to the point where I wanted to beat her up twice, but the teacher was there.

She took it way too far when she pushed my friend. Everyone in the class is annoyed by her and she rarely gets in trouble even if we tell on her. How do I deal with her?

Hey girl, it’s way hard when there’s a bully like that in your class who gets away with her behavior. Here’s the thing though: Violence is NEVER, NEVER the answer. Take a deep breath. Fight your impulses and keep the peace. Remember that it’s not just you being hurt by this girl; it’s a lot of people. There’s strength in numbers and an adult is the right person to go to for help.

TUNE OUT THE TEASING

First thing’s first: What does this girl do that annoys you? Is she just teasing you? Or is she constantly shoving and pushing people around — both physically and figuratively — to get her way? If she’s just teasing, try to ignore her behavior. For example, if she makes a snide remark about you, say nothing. If she’s kicking you or other people’s chairs, ask her to stop. You may find she’ll stop the behavior on her own when she gets no response or you just ask her to give it a rest.

KEEP YOUR EMOTIONS IN CHECK

It can be super hard to deal with someone who drives you off the edge, but remember, striking back makes you a bully too and can get you into huge trouble. Take the high road here and set the example. Be polite when dealing with her. Stay cool even if her anger gets hot. Composure will go a long way in this case. Be the person you wish she’d be and maybe she’ll take the hint.

WHEN TO TELL AN ADULT

If you’ve tried ignoring her and asking her to stop and she’s still bothering you and your classmates, it’s time to band together and talk to your teach’. This girl is disrupting you and others’ school days and is getting in the way of your learning. Your teacher should know about that and take the appropriate action; keep in mind this girl is a lot more likely to listen to an adult than you and her peers.

If this girl ever becomes violent (i.e. does more than just shove your friend), talk to a guidance counselor or administrator or have a parent call. An adult needs to discipline this girl the moment it gets physical and before someone gets really hurt.

Hang in there and don’t let this girl win. By keeping your cool, you’ll be able to not only put this bully in retirement but to say you took the higher road doing it. Good luck!

Mods I need advice! There is this bully in my school and she is overweight and she bullies EVERYONE! I used to be her best friend when we were very young, but I started hanging out with other girls and she got jelous and stoped being my friend. I used to be sad but then I relized I didn't miss her being bossy or mean. I still miss a few things about her, but I am happy with my new friends. She always gossips about me and says I stole her friend(I didn't! I am just friendly and we happen to be very good friends!) and she yells at me and swears. She bullies everyone and no one bullies her to her face, but she is unkind to everyone. How should I stand up to her? She probably thinks she needs to stand up for herself because she is overweight, but if she was nice no one would pay attention to her weight. What is a nice way to tell her to stop verbally and pysically abusing people, but still get her to listen?

Hey girl!

It's great that you have a solid group of friends that you can count on. The reason your former friend bullies others is because of her own insecurities, whether it's her weight or her dissatisfaction with her social life. If you ever have a time where you're alone with her, it might be a good thing to gently explain to her how her bullying is affecting other people. Tell her how much you used to value her as a friend, how great she was. Maybe that will make her look back and realize how much she's changed--and not in a positive way. Explain to her how bullying hurts other people. Plus, the best way for her to reestablish some friends is to be nice! Good luck!

If you don't want to talk to the guidance counselor, who do you talk to? I'm in a complicated friend mess. I don't know who to talk to....... What should I expect and how do
I ask?
Thanks,

Hey girly girl! If you can't talk to a guidance counselor, then I'd suggest your rents. If you can't talk to them, maybe a teacher that you trust, or an aunt or other relative. And, just be honest with how you feel. You'll feel better after getting it off your chest  Smile

I get bullied too. it really gets annoying!!!!! I just want to beat her up. I never do because that is acting like her. She is also being mean to my friend. The principle knows and we have talked about it but it dose not work. Anyway, I know how you feel.

MOD
The guy my friend, Danielle has been crushing on (and dating) said I was going out with him! Now Danielle is ignoring me! I tried SUPER hard telling her that I didn't want to steal Denver from her, but she said I am! I don't know what else to do! My older sister, Faith said I should just wait till she figures it out. Should I? Please help!
~ Hannah

Hey Hannah,

It's probably smart to follow Faith's advice and give Danielle some space right now. It's tough because you don't want her to think you went behind her back, but she's upset right now and won't listen to what you have to say. In a couple days, it might be helpful to write Danielle an email to explain the situation. Instead of harping on the fact that he lied to her (because she wouldn't want to think that either), instead tell her how much she means to you and how you would never hurt her. Tell her you respect her feelings and support her in anyone she likes - you would never have agreed to that at all, let alone without talking to her first. Be honest and I'm sure it'll all work out <3 Good luck babe.
