My period always soaks through

Check these out, too...

  • Pad prob! How do I get them from my locker to the bathroom?
  • Have a happier period--yes, really!--with our playlist
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • What stinks down south?
Whenever I put on pads, once I sit down, they scrunch up and I end up bleeding around them. Once, I bled through my pads, underwear and my pants! I was at school, so it was mortifying. Is it normal for it to be THIS heavy on the first day?

When it comes to periods, your body has a mind of its own. What’s “normal” for one gal may be totally different for the next. For most, the heaviest days are usually somewhere between days one and three.

Pads, no doubt, can be kinda a pain. Handling worries of leakage, not to mention how uncomfortable they can be, is no walk in the park. Next time you wear a pad, try one with “wings.” These side flaps will hold it in place (hopefully). If you’ve got a heavy flow, make sure to get one that’s extra long and a li’l thicker: It should say “heavy” on the package.

When you’re ready, it’s def worth considering tampons. As long as you change them when the box says, you’ll spend your day a bit more stress-free. Unfortunately, there’s always a chance of leakage when you have your monthly visitor, so stop by the restroom when you’ve got a chance to make sure everything’s A-OK or wear a panty liner or pad in addition as backup. Another hint: wear dark undies and bottoms. That way, if there’s a leak, you’ll be sure to know before your classmates.

You need to get ones that stick well. It should stick fairly well to your underwear and use wings to hold it in place. xoxo kerra

*MOD! Ok so whenever I get my period I usually use a thin panty liner cause I can't stand the feeling of a big stupid pad. I use tampons but always find myself getting stressed out about when to change the tampon and freaking out if im a minute over what i usually set myself for (3-4hours). Are there any pads that are smaller (im petite 14 year old) and more comfortable than the regular big fat ones that everyone i know uses? Thanks!! <3

MOD MOD!!!!
Today, I bled through three pairs of pants and four pairs of undies when I was wearing two pads... all within two hours! Is that normal? I had to leave school it got so bad. I don't usually wear tampons because I fear leaving them in too long and my school is too strict to miss the first minute of class for one week, twice a month (usually how often I have my period, though it is quite irregular.. even after 4 years.). Should I consult a doctor about this?
Thanks so so sooo much! This HAS happened before. A few times, to tell the truth

Hey girlie. That does seems like a bit much. Maybe you aren't wearing thick enough pads. You could just have a heavy flow. I would try to wear tampons if I were you. That way, you can wear a tampon and a pad for extra protection. You don't have to fear leaving them in too long because you can change it during your lunch break. It should hold out throughout the morning and then again in the afternoon. Make sure to get the super tampons for when you have a heavy flow.

You should try pads that are super and can absorb more. As for the tampons i think you should try and use them. Try to practice putting them in. Everyone struggles a bit at first but youll eventually get it Smile xoxo kerra

My friends and sister and mom always talk about it and it's really weird and uncomfortable because i haven't gotten mine yet! Ughh! When will my period come?!? HELP!

Hey girl, unfortunately no one can tell you that. Just be patient, know there's no magic age everyone gets their period, and don't mind the discussions. You'll have yours soon enough and trust me, when you do, you'll realize it's really not that magical; it's just something that happens each month.

Dear Mod,
I just recently finished my 3rd period. My first period lasted 2 days than my 2nd period lasted 7 days and the recent one lasted 4 days im so confused. Also the first and second one well they were 11 months apart. The second and the third one were like 4 or 5 months apart. Is that normal? Is having different lengthed periods normal? SO Srry to bother you but im a swimmer and i still can't figure out how to put a tampon in. i swim 5 days a week every week of the except august and in the summer i do double swimteam which is doing 2 swim teams at once. I need help. This is kinda gross but i got a tampon in once but when i pulled the applicater away out went the tampon. HELP!!!

Hey girl,

Periods are usually irregular, especially in the first year! So the lengths of each period (2 days, 7 days, 4 days) are totally normal and will even out as you get older. But usually periods aren't so far apart - a couple weeks early/late is normal, but more than 2 months (and in your case, 11 months) is a lot. I would chat with your doctor about it and explain your schedule so far just to make sure everything is progressing healthily! Tampons get easier with practice, so don't let any past problems/discomfort scare you! Just grab another one, relax your muscles and follow the directions that come in the box. Make sure you push the applicator "button" in all the way before pulling it out. That'll make sure the tampon stays in Smile

MOD MOD MOD: I have an extremely heavy flow and soak through a Always Infinity super pad in 2-3 hours, do you have any suggestions with dealing with it at school and in gym? BTW: tampons are out of the question, because I don't like them and find them painful. Thanks! Also, I'm really embarrased with going to a public girls bathroom and having someone or everyone hearing me change my pad. Any tips?

Hey chica! I would try some overnight pads. I think Always makes them. If not Always, then another, similar brand that you can find in the same store. And, change your pad as often as possible to avoid leakage.

Hey sofia, I can relate the first day of my period is just horrible. I think you should  try midol or another pain reliever for me ibuprofean works best for me it also might help it to take medicine the day before your period will start. Other than that there is no way to make you flow lighter. But make sure to drink plenty of fluids and take it easy

Mod mod mod I was wondering of it was possible to have a period without blood. And say you've been getting that clear and yellowish stuff. What do you do?

I don't really think that that's possible - you could ask your doc, but from what I know bleeding is getting your period.  You don't have to do anything in particular if you've been getting discharge.  If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can wear a pantiliner.  I would check this out:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/02/04/period-qa-discharge.aspx

Hey girlie- no need to be worried! When you first start your period, it might be inconsistent. Everyone is different. It may take months and months before it gets on a regular cycle. If you want to know information about the span of time, talk to your mom or a doctor!

MOD Our school is going to camp and hike for a week, and I'm kinda worried that my period will start up again at that time, No bathrooms, just going in the woods, and mostly guys at this trip, and the teacher is male. All of my friends went on a cooking trip. What should I do???

Hey girlie- this is a tough spot to be in. Definitely pack all enough tampons/pads for a week (just in case). If there's no bathrooms, you have no choice but to go in the woods (though you should double check with your teacher to see if they have porty-pots nearby). If you are forced to go in the woods though, it will be ok! Try and find a spot that's far away from everyone in order to change your tampons/pads. You can bring some sort of small plastic trash bag for all of your trash. Hope this helps, and if you need more ideas, ask your mom!

I totally understand - sometimes you feel super awkward bringing up stuff like this to anyone, especially a stranger. But try to remind yourself that this is your doc and he/she has heard EVERYTHING. It's their job to be prepared to answer your questions about your bod, and no question is off limits! Just let the doctor know that you're a little concerned and you've been wondering why it hasn't come yet. The week before my period, i noticed my breasts were swollen and very tender. I don't mean a little swollen- I mean A LOT! My regular bra barely fit! We were at a store and i tried on a bra and a whole cup size up finally was the right size! Is that normal?
Also the other day at school I had cramps and threw up.. :/ is that normal?

Hey, girl! No worries, this is totally normal. Sometimes right before or after our periods we start to get PMS  and  things like this happen. All you can do is deal with it. Ask your mom to get you some medicine for the cramps  (they sound pretty bad for you!) and get some bras that are a size up so you will be comfy next time this happens.

MOD MOD MOD!!! Ok so I have a bit of a problem. My friend's birthday is coming up and she might have a sleepover party. If it's on her birthday, I'll have my period. What should I do? Only two of my friends have their period and I don't wanna make a big deal out of it! PLEASE HELP!!!

Hey girl, You don't have to make a big deal out of it.  Just come prepared with the supplies you need.  If anyone asks, you can tell them but not make it a big deal.  xoxo
