Are you always flaunting your one-of-a-kind style? Find yourself wishing you were a contestant on Project Runway? Sure, fashion’s a tough industry to crack, but who knows, with perseverance you could reach your goals.

We got the chance to chat with 23-year-old designer and boutique owner, Silvia Huezo. Here’s what she had to say about her budding career and how she “makes it work.”

GL: When did you first become interested in design?

Sylvia: In high school I wanted to be different and didn’t want to look like everybody else. I wanted to stand out, so I died my hair bright red, like cherry tomato red! I started buying clothes from thrift stores and I thought, “What if I make my own clothes? Then I’ll really be different.” I bought myself a sewing machine (I didn’t know anything) and just started sewing.

I also took an entrepreneurship class my senior year in high school and that was what really made me say to myself, “This is definitely what I want to do for the rest of my life.” I went to

GL: How did you come up with the name Red Hue for your boutique?
Sylvia: Red has always been my favorite color. A “hue” is a tint. There are different hues or tints of one color, so Red Hue means many shades of red. But also, “hue” is the first three letters of my last name, Huezo.

GL: What inspires your designs?
Sylvia: So many different things. I look at fashion magazines and I pick up on trends. Also, whatever mood I am in or whatever I want to do at the time influences my designs. Popular culture, music and so many other things inspire me. Going to thrift stores and vintage stores probably inspires me the most.

GL: Do you ever hit mental road blocks?
Sylvia: Oh yeah. Writers have writer’s block and artists have that too. For me there are times, like when I’m really stressed out or worried about something that I can’t come up with any ideas. I have to just sit and be quiet and relax. Also, I go shopping, but not necessarily to [buy]. I go to thrift stores or vintage stores [to see what’s there] and then the juices start flowing again.

GL: Can you walk us through your design and production process?
Sylvia: I design a collection here and send sketches back to my home country, El Salvador, where everything gets manufactured. It’s just a little workshop where I have a patternmaker, a cutter who hand cuts every piece and two seamstresses who put together everything. It can take as little as three weeks to get something out because I manufacture directly. The best part is it’s 100 percent sweatshop free.

GL: People often think of fashion as an incredibly cut-throat industry. Have you felt that?
Sylvia: A little bit. It’s very competitive and fierce, but that’s why I like the fact that I’m independent. I do everything completely outside of that arena or environment.

GL: What is your favorite part about your job?
Sylvia: When I see someone try on a garment and they really like it, I love that. I love to see that person happy with what I’ve designed. I think that’s the most fun part: seeing the end result.

GL: What is the toughest part?
Sylvia: Trying to balance everything and being organized. There are times when I just lack organization and have too much stuff going on.

GL: Do you have any advice for girls interested in a career in fashion?
Sylvia: Dream BIG and just go for it. I’m still trying too.

I wanna be a singer but my parents are so set on me being a doctor but here's the thing (I HATE BLOOD). I can't even look at severe acne without feeling sick I've wanted to be a singer since I was in kindergarten and my aunt taught me the "Beyoncè" version of humpty dumpty but if I tell them I wanna be a singer they say no you're going to be a doctor because your Dad can give you a recommendation for college and you can get a schoslarship my parents are so set on that I bet they don't even have a college fund for me! HELP I NEED IT!!!!!

Hey girly, make a deal with your parents that you will go to college, but continue singing.  Your parents want a stable future for you (every parent wants that for their child).  You should bring up the doctor issue first.  Explain your issue with blood.  Make sure you stay calm.  After that, talk to them about going to school in LA or Nashville or NYC, somewhere where you can study at school AND pursue your dream.  Good luck!

I've always been interested in fashion, but i want to know what i can do to help myself get to becoming a fashion designer.do you have any tips or advice?

Hey girlie! Immerse your self in all things fashion -- learn all you can and, if you plan to go to college, choose one that is known for fashion, such as Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) or LIM College, which can help you further your craft

I would really like to be a singer or a fashion designer. I've had a dream of becoming famous since I was three years old and I'm thirteen now. I can draw some really good designs for clothes. I've showed my friends and they said they would totally wear it. But, on the other hand, I really want to be a singer. I have a really good voice and my friends said they would buy a cd if I made one. Which path do I choose? I'm afraid if I do eventually become famous, I will never live a normal life. What do I do? Please help me.

Hey girlie. At this point, take some singing classes and fashion design classes to see which one you like better. Then, you can pursue that route. And you're right. If you become famous, you probably won't live a normal life, but that's the risk you have to take when you're famous. Good luck.

I would LOVE to be either a singer/actress/model and wish i couldbe one of those. but i worry my singing voice is not strong enough my acting is not good enough or im not pretty enough it seems that tho i might want these jobs sooooo bad everythin and anythin is standing in my way of getting them. Singer is the main thing i want to be i LOVE music and could imagine having a job outside of the music industry. what do i do?? Frown xxxxx

Hey girlie. First of all, if you do not believe in yourself, you will never fulfill any of your dreams. It must start with confidence that you will make your dream your reality. You also have to be willing to put in 110% effort. I think you should take singing lessons to strengthen your voice if that is something you really want to do. Also, make a list of your goals and ways to achieve them.Hang it on the wall and look at it every day when you wake up. This will give you motivation. "The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it."

MOD! I really wanna be an actress/singer/designer when i grow up but wanna start getting famous like really soon i just dont know how. Any suggestions or comments? thanx Smile

Hey girl! You are talking to the right person because when I was younger my dream was to become an actress as well! I was lucky enough to have gone on some auditions and explore the field for a while but eventually realized it wasn't for me! Before you get involved in the industry you should think long and hard and know that it costs a lot of money, requires traveling, and sometimes you may get really down if you don't get the part! You also need to be careful and watch out for scams, they are a ton! If you are serious about this then talk to your parents about getting an agent and always keep your head held high! I couldn't have gone on auditions without my mom, she was there for me every step of the way! Goodluck! XOXO

i want so badly to volunteer at an animal rescue or shelter and work with the animals in some way, but all of the rescues and shelters that are close to my house don't let kids under the age of 18 work with the animals. Is there any good solution so that6 i can work with animals? I'm not sixteen yet, so i can't work at the local pet store that a bunch of animals come to. i will when i'm sixteen, but could i have something to do until then?

Hey girlie. Ask them if you can do an internship type volunteer work! Tell them you are willing to do anything that they need! Be persistent.

i just a finished a story on the computer. Its formatted like a book, so if it were a book, it would be 341 pages. I sent it out to some of my friends and family to read and i just finished editing it. I really wanna send it to a publisher. Idk if my parents will let me, though. How should i ask them about this and do you know any publishing houses that like to publish young authors?

hey! Just tell them what you've done. they should be really proud of your accomplishment. I think a google search on young adult publishers should turn up some good results to send your manuscript to. good luck!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOOOOOOOODDDD!!!! ok, so i need this as quick as possibe. So, my friend told me this HUGE secret. Lets just call him "S" so i was over tired at this all nighter thing and acidently told 3 other people. One of the 3 people i told, lets call her "B", told "S" that i told 3 people his secret. now he hates me, because the secret could ruin his chances of getting into a good school. and i dont even remember telling anyone, so when i was asked by "S" if i told anyone, i said no. and he was mad at me for lying to him, even tho i didnt mean to. so i as stressed out with that. Then my "friend" "B" told me that she told "S" and told me that everyone thinks im a selfish lier who thinks i think im perfect, but everyone is afraid to tell me. i dont know what to do. and now they r afraid i told someone else their secrets just because of this incident. i cant stop crying. MOD MOD MOD PLLLEEEEAAASEEE HELP ME!! im losing all my friends!! Frown

Hey chickadee! I would be honest with everyone, and acknowledge that you were wrong. Apologize to S for telling his secret, and tell him the truth about it slipping out when you were tired. Ask him what you can do to make it up to him. Or, you could write him a heart felt letter about how sorry you are.

As for your other friends, again, I would admit that telling his secret was wrong, and tell B that you've already apologized to S.
