Popcorn and cranberry Christmas tree garland

Oh, Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree! We’ve got a way to make your evergreen’s branches lovelier than ever this year with a decorating idea that oozes holiday tradition: strands of popcorn and fresh cranberries.

What you’ll need:

A large bowl full of day-old popcorn. If you opt for microwave popcorn, choose a variety without butter and salt. Stale popcorn holds together better than fresh, which has a tendency to crumble.

A bowl of fresh cranberries

Fishing line

Needle

What you’ll do:

Thread your needle, but don’t cut the fishing line until your finished…or it becomes too long and unmanageable. Now it’s time to start threading! You can alternate popcorn and cranberries, or make a popcorn strand and a cranberry strand. Make sure your needle goes through the center of each piece of popcorn of cranberry.

All finished? Snip the end of your fishing line and tie a few thick, tight knots in both ends. Drape the strands on your Christmas tree—I recommend doing it after the lights but before the ornaments—and enjoy.

Do you have pets? Keep temptation at bay by keeping your tasty strands a few feet out of reach.

Is Mom worried about hanging real live food on the tree for weeks on end? Compromise and hang your strands on a tree outside right before the big day. It’ll look super festive, and give the squirrels and birds a chance to have a celebratory feast, too.

Note: Cranberries have a tendency to stain clothes, so make sure you’re wearing some old ones that you don’t mind getting messy.
