OMG--even athletes aren't getting enough exercise

Check these out, too...

  • A germaphobe's guide to the gym: 5 icky things to avoid
  • Classic baseball flicks that'll make you love the sport
  • 10 cinchy ways to burn 100 calories
  • In the News: Exercise really does calm you down
  • Should you hit the gym or take the stairs?
Think that being on the school soccer team means you’re getting your daily dose of exercise? Think again! According to a report from Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine only about one-fourth of kids who participate in team sports get the recommended amount of daily exercise during practice.

The government suggests that children get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day, but less than 50 percent actually do. The numbers are even scarier for teens (only 10 percent actually get enough sweating in).

But how does your hour and a half huffing and puffing up and down the field not cut it? Consider all the time you spend listening to pep talks from Coach or waiting your turn to go through a drill. That idle time really adds up, which means you may not be working hard for as long as you think. Sigh.

So what should you do? While participating in organized sports is really good for you and, as the journal suggests, has infinite social benefits, don’t stop there. Think of extra ways you can eke in some exercise. Practice got you up and moving, so keep that groove going. Suggest your teammates go for a post-practice jog (hello, victory lap) or do some weight training on your own. On your off days, don’t forget to work out so you don’t lose your momentum.

What do you think? Is your practice totally tough or a walk in the park? Blog it out...

Dear Mod,
I am a 13 year old girl who swims up to 8 hours a week plus meets. Each practice we swim about 2 to 3 miles. I am trying to eat right since my doctor says I should lose 15 pounds. I already get enough exercise because my practices are 2 hours. How can I stop splurging on sweets? Please help!

Hey girlie!

Staying away from the sweets sure is hard, but it's totally doable! When your craving sugar, instead of reaching for the candy and cookies, try making yourself a yummy fruit smoothie. You can make them from any fruit and yogurt that you have in your house! They're sweet and filling, but you'll still feel like your having dessert.

I swim 5 days a week for 2 hours on weekdays and 3 and one half hours on weekends. We swim a minimum of 4 miles per practice unless we are tapering for big swim meets, when we swim about 3 miles per practice or less and work on teqnique. at the 3 hour practices we do 1 hour of dry lie that consits of about an 300 push ups, 500 crunches, 100 squat jumps, and 10 minutes of planks. It is ard but realy fun and i would highly reccomend swimmming to anyone. The good thing about it is the schedule is custimizable and offers coaching for more competive and less competive groups. Swimming at a gym works too to get you in shape and fit looking, even if you cant go really fast or for long distances. It is all about what you are capable of doing! Laughing <3 Camie

how can i lose about 5 lbs. i alrceady swim for about an hour 4x per week and take a dance class and eat all right

Hey girlie! It seems like you are already doing the right things for weight loss. You don't want to overkill it since losing too much weight can be harmful to your health. If you end up eating less or exercising more than what you already are, then you may end up heading down the road to anorexia. Just keep up the good work you are doing so far, and let your body determine what weight you should be at (that's why we have such wonderful metabolisms). That way you can keep off the weight longer, and be happier while doing it!

During the fall I had feild hockey practice every day after school for 3 hours! It was long and I hated that, but I think we did get enough exercise most of the time cause even though there are talks and drills that we have to wait for and stuff, 3 hours is a long time so we def don't just do nothing.

Volleyball practice for me is 2.5 hours. We definitely get at least an hour of exercise during that time... but probably more.

I play tennis pretty competitively and I also practice at a place and we are constantly playing. Our coaches talk to us but not long and we are always playing. We dont have to wait in line much for drills because there are enough courts. When we are waiting we are doing something to do with footwork. So Im pretty sure I have the 60 minutes.

I do cross country. There is no waiting in line for drills we do it all at the same time and there is no delaying on the running part you run about six to seven miles a day continuously. There is no stopping. Pretty sure thats a good 60 minutes ;)

I've heard that 60 minutes a day is way too much and that 20 minutes of keeping your heart rate up without stopping is enough.

MOD MOD MOD! 1. Everyone tells me to not worry about my weight but I do. Everyone says I am so skinny, but every time I look in the mirror I feel so ugly. I just gained 3 pounds so now I am 78. I really want to know how to lose weight: just like 8 pounds. I already train for 14 hours per week and eat little. 2. I kinda dont want to talk to my parents, but I'm dealing with something right now that Im having a hard time with. I dont want to keep my emotions "bottled up" because it makes me feel more stress, so do you know what i can do?

Hey girl, I would really recommend talking with an adult you trust - it doesn't have to be your parents if you're not comfortable talking to them.  It could be a teacher, counselor, aunt, or anyone else you trust.  Dealing with tough emotions can often affect how we feel about ourselves and our bodies, and make us see ourselves more negatively.  It's important to talk to a doc before you start any kind of weight loss plan.  It sounds to me like you are being too hard on yourself!  Reach out for support, and I imagine you will start to feel a lot better.  Wishing you the best, xoxo

60 minutes a day? I'm pretty sceptical, I've read in TONS of places that 20 minutes cuts it, and if you ran for 60 minutes (i probably can't) you would make up for more than the calories you ate that day if your a healthy eater, and that's just anorexicish!

MOD!MOD!MOD!MoD!
HI!!! I have a question for you. My health is really not that good. I am a 13 year old girl and I'm 30-35 pounds overweight which is not a good thing. I was wondering if you have any tips for me to lose the weight before I go to high school next year. I have been dancing most of my life and I usually have dance classes every week almost. I ride the bus so I walk in the morning and afternoon to my bustop and back home (it's kind of up a hill type thing). I have P.E. for one semester. But it will end in Jan. I think it's my eating habits though. I try to eat healthy but I can't. There's way to much junk food in my house. My brother loves it so I can't get rid of it or ask my mom to stop buying it. My 5 year old bro is fit. My overall look is not way fat. But I need to lose some fat from my body and tone up so if there is anything you can do to help me please help me.

Hey girlie! The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor about it. See what category of weight is right for you before you try and lose weight.

wow!
this statistic seems so wrong and misled. they must not know what we have to DO during practice.? first of all, being on my high school JV team, my basketball practice is an hour. Who does just 30 minutes? Second, even if you only do 30 minutes, all the walking you do in a day adds up to basically 60 minutes.

I'm on the swim team, so there's no waiting for drills. We do a ton of continuous swimming. We may stop for half a minute to see what our next workout is, but that's about it. Also, I have practice every day after school for 2 and a half hours, so I think I'm okay. That's why I love being a swimmer.

Lots of scientists say that doing too much exercise (excessive) can weaken the immune system. Not exercising does the same thing, but too much is also bad. 1 hour a day seems a bit excessive, but I'm not sure of the actual figures. I think I'll just stick to exercising for like an hour or two a few times a week.
