The 1-2-3 of period protection

Getting your first period can be a little scary, and sometimes you just hate to talk to your mom about certain things! But there are def things you should know, and that’s what we’re here to tell you.

Getting technical

First let’s go for the technical stuff. Your period is a result of your body ridding itself of unneeded tissue and blood. Where does it come from? During the complete menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one of your two ovaries, and travels down the Fallopian tube to your uterus.

Now, your uterus has been getting ready for this, and for a baby, so it has built up a pretty good sized lining inside. When the egg isn’t fertilized by sperm in the Fallopian tube, the uterus absorbs it, and the egg and lining are flushed through the vagina with extra blood.

What's it all mean?

What does this mean for you? Approximately every 27-31 days you get a period. It’s a little different for every girl, and the length of time your period lasts can be different, too – anywhere from 3-7 days long. Before this time, you might notice that your breasts hurt or are tender, and that you are more emotional; whether that translates into you crying or screaming is to be discovered.

During your actual period, you might feel stomach cramps, your back and legs may ache or you may get headaches. These are all pretty normal, and magnesium supplements usually help.

Whether you start off on tampons or pads is up to you, and is something you should discuss with your mom. Many moms would like for their daughters to at least start off on pads, and many do not care either way.

Clean up your act

It’s important for you to know that tampons don’t hurt, and if inserted correctly, you can’t feel them at all. When wearing them, be sure to change them every few hours, though, following the directions on the box. Also, ya might want to wear a panty liner even if you wear a tampon, so that if anything leaks, you have a backup. Either way, you’ll want to change frequently to keep clean.

Taking long, warm showers really helps during this time. If you are wearing tampons, you can even wear one while you take a bath. Using Epsom salts will also help the cramps.

When your period is over, you can still have light bleeding from time to time that will only last a day or two. This is also normal, but if you’re having full-blown periods too often, say every other week, you may need to see a doctor. Going too long between periods may also indicate a problem, so if you go a few months between periods, be sure to tell your mom so you can get that checked out.

Periods can be a pain, but it’s a part of nature. With the proper supplies in hand, you’ll be ready to face the elements!

I have the worst period cramps right now and I'm trying to use a hot water bottle but its not helping. I really don't want to wake up my dad though cause he had to work all day so I bet he's so tired. Plus I don't think he'd understand.... I'm not supposed to have medicine without asking him.

Hey girl, even though you think your dad might not understand, it's worth being honest.  Simply tell him that you're in a lot of pain because of menstrual cramps and ask if it's okay if you take some medicine.  If you have to wake him up, apologize, and hopefully he'll help you find some appropriate medicine.  Hope you feel better soon!  Also, for ideas to handle PMS, check out this helpful page.

MODMODMODMOD!
I got my period for the first time about eight months ago. At first, I didn't think that I should keep track of it, so I didn't. It would come once a month and last five or six days. But lately, it's been coming every eighteen days and lasting seven days. So I have two periods every single month. I'm really worried that something is wrong. Is this normal? I really don't want to have to talk to my mom about it. That would be SO uncomfortable and really embarrassing. But if I have no choice but to talk to her, how should I bring it up? ...What shoud I say? Help!!

Hey Chica!

We have all had problems with our periods, especially when they first come along. Getting you period twice a month means you're not regular yet. Call your doc and ask some questions. Chances are nothing is wrong, but she'll probably want to see you for a check-up. As for talking to your mom, you so do not need to be embarrassed. She went though the exact same thing! She'll be happy you trust her enough to confide in her.

@mesn
the stuff in ur undies is discharge its totally nromal and actually means ur healthy, and sadly, theres no way to stop it, its kind of like a sign ur gonna get ur period in 6-18 months, and ur gonna hav it for the rest of ur life, if u dont like the feeling of it in ur undies, u can always wear a pantiliner (which is like a mini pad to dry the discharge and keep it from staining ur panties if u start to get alot of it) plus, if u wear one, ull get used to wearing pads by the time u actually get ur period, and if ur period randomly cums in gym class, the pantiliners will probly stop the blood from leaking, and save u the embarrassment... if ur discharge ever turns yellow or green, u may hav sum type of infection and u shood go to the doc, if it turns brown or pinkish, thts a big sign ur gonna get ur period rlly soon (and if its brown it may be dried blood, not discharge) and u shood get prepared, good luck hun!
