The 1-2-3 of period protection

Getting your first period can be a little scary, and sometimes you just hate to talk to your mom about certain things! But there are def things you should know, and that’s what we’re here to tell you.

Getting technical

First let’s go for the technical stuff. Your period is a result of your body ridding itself of unneeded tissue and blood. Where does it come from? During the complete menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one of your two ovaries, and travels down the Fallopian tube to your uterus.

Now, your uterus has been getting ready for this, and for a baby, so it has built up a pretty good sized lining inside. When the egg isn’t fertilized by sperm in the Fallopian tube, the uterus absorbs it, and the egg and lining are flushed through the vagina with extra blood.

What's it all mean?

What does this mean for you? Approximately every 27-31 days you get a period. It’s a little different for every girl, and the length of time your period lasts can be different, too – anywhere from 3-7 days long. Before this time, you might notice that your breasts hurt or are tender, and that you are more emotional; whether that translates into you crying or screaming is to be discovered.

During your actual period, you might feel stomach cramps, your back and legs may ache or you may get headaches. These are all pretty normal, and magnesium supplements usually help.

Whether you start off on tampons or pads is up to you, and is something you should discuss with your mom. Many moms would like for their daughters to at least start off on pads, and many do not care either way.

Clean up your act

It’s important for you to know that tampons don’t hurt, and if inserted correctly, you can’t feel them at all. When wearing them, be sure to change them every few hours, though, following the directions on the box. Also, ya might want to wear a panty liner even if you wear a tampon, so that if anything leaks, you have a backup. Either way, you’ll want to change frequently to keep clean.

Taking long, warm showers really helps during this time. If you are wearing tampons, you can even wear one while you take a bath. Using Epsom salts will also help the cramps.

When your period is over, you can still have light bleeding from time to time that will only last a day or two. This is also normal, but if you’re having full-blown periods too often, say every other week, you may need to see a doctor. Going too long between periods may also indicate a problem, so if you go a few months between periods, be sure to tell your mom so you can get that checked out.

Periods can be a pain, but it’s a part of nature. With the proper supplies in hand, you’ll be ready to face the elements!

I have the worst period cramps right now and I'm trying to use a hot water bottle but its not helping. I really don't want to wake up my dad though cause he had to work all day so I bet he's so tired. Plus I don't think he'd understand.... I'm not supposed to have medicine without asking him.

Hey girl, even though you think your dad might not understand, it's worth being honest.  Simply tell him that you're in a lot of pain because of menstrual cramps and ask if it's okay if you take some medicine.  If you have to wake him up, apologize, and hopefully he'll help you find some appropriate medicine.  Hope you feel better soon!  Also, for ideas to handle PMS, check out this helpful page.

MODMODMODMOD!
I got my period for the first time about eight months ago. At first, I didn't think that I should keep track of it, so I didn't. It would come once a month and last five or six days. But lately, it's been coming every eighteen days and lasting seven days. So I have two periods every single month. I'm really worried that something is wrong. Is this normal? I really don't want to have to talk to my mom about it. That would be SO uncomfortable and really embarrassing. But if I have no choice but to talk to her, how should I bring it up? ...What shoud I say? Help!!

Hey Chica!

We have all had problems with our periods, especially when they first come along. Getting you period twice a month means you're not regular yet. Call your doc and ask some questions. Chances are nothing is wrong, but she'll probably want to see you for a check-up. As for talking to your mom, you so do not need to be embarrassed. She went though the exact same thing! She'll be happy you trust her enough to confide in her.

@mesn
the stuff in ur undies is discharge its totally nromal and actually means ur healthy, and sadly, theres no way to stop it, its kind of like a sign ur gonna get ur period in 6-18 months, and ur gonna hav it for the rest of ur life, if u dont like the feeling of it in ur undies, u can always wear a pantiliner (which is like a mini pad to dry the discharge and keep it from staining ur panties if u start to get alot of it) plus, if u wear one, ull get used to wearing pads by the time u actually get ur period, and if ur period randomly cums in gym class, the pantiliners will probly stop the blood from leaking, and save u the embarrassment... if ur discharge ever turns yellow or green, u may hav sum type of infection and u shood go to the doc, if it turns brown or pinkish, thts a big sign ur gonna get ur period rlly soon (and if its brown it may be dried blood, not discharge) and u shood get prepared, good luck hun! Hey chickie,

You can use a tampon whenever you feel ready to try. There's no set amount of time you have to wait! Some people start off using tampons, and some wait years. Make sure you read our Periods, Periods section for all the scoop on that time of the month!

I just started my period today. When I noticed, there was blood EVERYWHERE! It was a total mess! My mom told me she had a very heavy flow. Does this mean I will too? Thanks,
-Heather Smile

Hey Heather,

It doesn't necessarily mean you'll definitely have a heavy flow, but sometimes it happens that our periods are a lot like our mom's. But each month our flow varies, so next month could start slow enough for you to catch it in time. No worries though - just try to "chart" your period so you know about when to expect it, and be prepared with heavy pads and a change of undies in case you do leak like this again!

We wear leotards and a lot of layers and it would take five to ten minutes to change my pad. I don't want to wear tampons and we don't have a ten minute break. What should I do?

Hey girl, it's normal to have irregular periods (I don't think your first grade injury has anything to do with your period; a cut is different than a menstrual cycle) but it might be worth talking to your mom about.

Hey darling! Don't worry, growing hair in that area is just a natural part of puberty and every girl ends up getting it at some point in their life. It's annoying now, but eventually you'll get used to it. As for the touching, it's totally natural for a girl to be curious about what's going on down there. I did the same thing with I was 11, but it's not considered masturbating. If you need more information on the subject, you can find an article on our website here: http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/11/23/Accidental-masturbation.aspx

Hey girlie! You might want to consider switching to pads since they offer better support for that time of the month. There are also tampons, which I personally believe offer the best protection. You can find out more information on the Tampax website (just write tampax into google and it will be the first link).

Then after it feels like i can't look her in the eye for hours. Any suggestions for an easier non akward approach to ask my mom girly stuff? Thank you Smile

Hey girl, I feel like it's a matter of how awkward you make this sitch. I'd suggest just asking your mom candidly if it's ok if you ask her a question about your body. Ask it and then move on. Don't think she's judging you or thinks much of it: it's perfectly natural to ask these questions and your mom understands that.

Hey girlie! Light brown stuff is usually old blood that has been sitting in the uterus for a little and is finaly now shedding. It could be your period, but could also be something different. Check with your mom about it and if it has an odd odor to it check with the doctor too.

Great idea! I would put enough pads for one day at school (3 or 4, just to play safe), a change of undies, a stash of Midol to take care of bad cramps, and some hygiene wipes (like Summer's Eve Cleansing Wipes) to stay fresh in case you leak Smile

It's tough, but you just need to try not to think about it so much. Do you have lockers at school? Throw some pads in the bottom of your locker so you're prepared. Use the bathroom once a day (or twice if you've had cramps for the past day or two) and check to make sure you're good. You can't pinpoint exactly when it's going to come so you just have to make sure you have the necessarily supplies and relax Smile But there's no sense in wearing a pad all the time to prepare - you could go for a whole week wearing a pad for no reason, which is really uncomfy!

Hey girl,

No way - you don't wanna wear a pad every single day just in case. Talk about uncomfy! Instead, just carry a couple pads and a change of undies in your purse when you go out. When your period starts, it'll be very light - sometimes it comes fast and makes a mess but, most times, you'll be able to catch it and put a pad on so you aren't caught by surprise at all Smile

Hey chica,

RELAX! It's totally normal for your period to be a lil irregular - a couple of days, or even a week or so, isn't weird at all. In fact, the fatigue and the discharge could be signs that it's on its way. Just stay prepared (keep a pad with ya) and try to be patient. If it's consistently irregular over the course of a couple months, consider asking your doc to make sure you're healthy. But in the meantime, take some deep breaths and relax <3

No prob babe! Yep, they have tons of different styles to suit your flow. For example, Always has a type of pad called the "Ultra Thin" which isn't as absorbent as a pad, but is also much thinner and more discrete. If you want a more specific type, why not ask mom to bring you along to the drugstore so you can chat about it and be there when she buys them? Smile

Yep! Just let her know that you're due to start your period soon so you'll need stuff for that - ask her if she would be able to grab a bag of pads and a box of pantiliners {but be understanding because that might be too expensive - just pads are ok for now if need be!} the next time she goes out. Hey chickie,

Merry Christmas! Yep, my advice for your period is to have a good supply of a variety of protection - a small box of pantiliners for the lighter days at the beginning and end, regular pads for the normal days and even a small box/bag of "overnight" pads for those days that are really heavy. It's hard to prepare for a period because you're never sure how your flow is going to be, but chances are, pantiliners will not be enough for each day. This way you'll have all your bases covered!

until you know how heavy your flow is going to be for sure (it varies a bit when you start your period so it most likely won't be the same next time), be safe and wear a pad, just so you're not constantly worrying about leaks. after your period starts to be consistent, you can switch to liners if that's more comfortable for you!

Mod mod!!! What's the difference between pads and pantyliners? Which is better to use when your on your period?? Thank you(:

A pantyliners are made up of a lighter material than pads. Women usually use them at the end of the period when they get small, sporadic leaks. Usually women use pads when on their period since they are more absorbent and provide more coverage

Hey girlie! If you are comfortable with panty liners, then you should stick with them. Every girl is built differently and goes through their period in different ways. Some girls wear pads, others panty liners. It's hard enough going through your period, so if you have a system that works, stick with it!

I plan on telling my mom in the morning so can you help me with what to say? My oldest sister can me a period kit a long time ago with pads and stuff. I have a pad for the night. PLEASE HELP!! THANKS!

Hey sweetie. Don't worry, getting your period is something we all go through, and I'm sure your mom will be more than understanding when you tell her. Here are some ways you can tell her. First, you can tell her upfront by meeting her in a private space and letting her know about the happy news. Just tell her "Mom I got my period" with a smiling face to let her know you're happy about the news, or you can even condense it into some other news. For example: "Mom, yesterday I had a test and got my period". Talking fast helps, especially if you're impulsive. But if you are really nervous about telling her, you can also leave her a written note or a text. Just remember, we all went through it including your mother and your sister, so they will be very understanding as well as happy to know that you have now officially entered into womanhood. Smile

Mod. I don't have my period yet, but I've been getting discharge for two years. I am small and am very skinny. I am 13. I don't want my period but I am sick of waiting!/:
I want to be prepared. So I have a few questions...
1. Is your period like discharge but redish brownish or is it more liquid?
2. When your done with your first period and it is about to be time for your next one, how can you expect it since it's irregular?
3. If you start and don't know, will it leave a stain on your jeans?
4. Do you feel it when it comes out?..
5. If you do feel it, do you let it out on your pad or go on the toilet?
Sorry for all these questions! If you can't answer them all can you show a link to some?
Thanks ALOT for helping!(:

Hey girl, 1) it's more reddish and brown. 2) it comes about every month. You may experience signs of PMS before: moodiness, bloating, fatigue, headaches, etc. 3) It usually doesn't, but it will stain your undies. Wear a pantyliner if you think you're close to your period. 4) Not really. You don't really notice it unless you're using the restroom. 5) It just leaks on its own. You don't have to worry.

Hey girl,

Just tell her exactly what you told me, in a calm and collected way. Don't get upset that she didn't get you the right thing - just ask her if you two could both go shopping together and grab a tiny box of pantiliners for the days that are too light for pads. Put it this way to her: pads are expensive, but you're really wasting pads when you use them and your period is too light. So why not get lighter pantiliners and save the pads for when you really need them? Smile

MOD I am a dancer and have been trying to use tampons. But whenever I try it won't seem to want to go in unless my mom does it for me(gross I know). I have some big auditions next month that come around the time of my period so I going to need to know how to use them! Is my hymen too small, or am I letting fear get in my way. Sorry this is long I am just stressing so much about this!

Hey girlie,

Not gross at all! When I started using them, I had my mom help out too. It could be a little of both: our bodies take a while to adjust to using tampons, but any kind of tensing up {which we do when we get nervous or anxious about it hurting/not working/whatever} can also make it MUCH harder than it has to be. The only thing you can do here is practice practice practice. Next period, make some time to sit in the bathroom with a box of tampons and focus on using them properly. Grab a mirror and position it in front of you so you can see what you're doing - this REALLY helps when you're first learning how, and soon you won't even need it! Read the instructions in the packet that comes with the box and remember to take deep breaths to stay calm. If you feel yourself tensing up, take a break and come back. I've been using them for years and every once in a while, mine don't "want to go in" too. But it's always because I'm trying to do it too fast or stressing about something else. When I remind myself to calm down for a sec and concentrate {make sure it's at the right angle and I'm holding it right}, it goes really fast Smile Best of luck chickie!

I have all the signs of starting like hair down their and discharge and such but I don't know? Plus I just measured today that I have grown an inch from August! help pleas! thanks(;

Hey girlie,

All of those things - growing taller, seeing hair down there/legs/underarms etc., discharge, your boob size changing - are parts of puberty, so it's possible that you would experience a growth spurt before your first period. But it's not required! And it doesn't mean that your a major growth spurt will be followed by your period. Just try to keep prepared {with a pad or tampon in your bag, just in case} and be patient til the big day!

Hey girly! It sounds like you just might have an irregular period. If you're not having sex, then I wouldn't worry too much. Lots of things can make your period irregular, including stress, how much physical activity you're getting, and what you're eating. I would ask your doc about it though, just to make sure!

About eight months ago, I saw some BARELY NOTICEABLE white streaks in my undies. Is that my discharge? If it is, will i get my period soon?

Hey girl,

Yep, sounds like discharge to me! You could get your period soon, but discharge can appear up to two years before your first period. So stay prepared and get informed about your period, but don't be worried you're going to get it tomorrow Smile you never know!

MOD MOD MOD! I am in gymnastics, and think I started my period today... We wear leotards (no undies) and they're very form-fitting. I practice 4 hours a week; 3 days a week. How am I supposed to go to the gym?
P.S-Sorry this is 2 comments in a row. I forgot to add it to the other one on top

Hey girlie,

No prob about the double comment Smile This is a perfect time for tampons chickie! I know it might be a little intimidating to try one for the first time, but tampons are especially great for sporty girls because you won't need to worry about anyone seeing them or as many leaks as with pads.

MOD MOD MOD! Today in school and at home I was feeling like I wet myself. There was dark drops on it mixed with white stuff, but nothing showed when I went to the bathroom. Lately I've been really emotional and today had stomoach pains. Is this my period?

Hey girlie,

When our periods start, they can be spotty and irregular.. so this definitely could be your period. Just stay prepared with a pad/tampon in your purse at all times and see what happens in the next few days!

MOD MODMOD!
okay, so today I had a brownish red stain in my underwear and when I wiped there was a mix of discharge and blood. Is this my period? If so, what should I know?
