I need medication, but Mom won't let me take it

I started getting depressed earlier this year, and I went on meds for a few months, but then my mom made me stop taking them because she thinks they’re a crutch for me and that I just need to deal with my problems. But I don't have problems; it’s just how I feel.

The therapist even said it's a chemical depression, not situational...and it's getting worse and worse. I haven't started cutting again yet, but I'm afraid I might. I told my mom how I'm feeling, and she still doesn't want to let me take meds.

I'm 16, and I think I should have a choice.

You’re in a tough place, girl. You’re 16, and you do have a voice about these decisions, but it’s sometimes hard to make it heard when you’re still under 18. It’s a good sign that your mom understood the need for therapy, but it sounds like she’s not getting on the same page with you and your therapist.

If your therapist recommended and prescribed medication that was working, but your mom won’t let you have it, that puts you in a difficult place. Perhaps your mom would be willing to come to a joint session with your therapist, or else see him/her alone.

This isn’t totally up to you to fix—that’s why you’ve got a therapist. And if you’re feeling like you might do something harmful to yourself, your therapist is there to call and you can always schedule an emergency appointment or phone appointment if you need one.

While it’s great that you have therapy to help you deal with this confusing time, you’re still living with your mom who cares about you but doesn’t quite understand what you’re going through. Sometimes it’s easier to get your message across in a letter. Try writing down your thoughts on paper in a clear, calm way, and see if your mom can digest it easier.

And if you ever need someone to talk to immediately because you’re afraid you might hurt yourself, try Teenline, teens helping teens: (800) 852-8336.

Recently, I have started having really awful lows. They can be triggered by even the smallest bad things, or even nothing. When they come, I get this feeling that I want to cut myself, and it's beginning to scare me. So far, during these lows, I haven't had anything to cut myself with, but have found myself desperately searching for something to do it and wanting very badly to cut myself. I'm kind of terrified that I'll get one of those lows when I have something around that I could possibly cut myself with. I don't really want to talk to my mom about it, because we're going through a kind of tough spot and she's been crying a lot. I don't want to put another load on her. What should I do to help myself? And also, does Teenline appear on the phone bill or not, like the Trevor Project?

Hey girl. This is a serious problem and even though your mom may be going through a rough patch, I think she'd want to help you through it. I'm not totally sure about the Teenline, but I think you should definitely call regardless. Here's a link with more info: http://kidshealth.org/teen/your_mind/mental_health/cutting.html

MOD MOD MOD!
This is sort of related. There is one girl who is my really good friend. We tell each other everything! She is always asking me if she is fat though! I hate it because she is pretty heavy but I don't want to tell her that! She brings it up almost everyday and its starting to seem like she just needs someone to tell her she isn't because she knows she is. I think I am hurting her more than helping her but she is putting me in an awkward position! I have tried changing the subject and she always needs to stay on that topic! HELP ASAP!
Thanks. Laughing
