Be the safest sitter

Check these out, too...

  • How to handle your top-5 big-time sitting probs
  • 7 signs you're a super sitter
  • How to get as many babysitting jobs as possible
You’ve seen the horror movies where the babysitter gets terrorized while the house is empty and the kids are asleep, right?

You don’t want to get caught in a thriller just to get a few extra bucks, so follow these tips to stay safe when babysitting at a new house.

Don’t Post Wanted Ads

It’s dangerous to post ads in grocery stores or other public places that say you’re a babysitter looking for work because you’re giving your phone number out to complete strangers! Who knows who will respond to your ad. It’s safer to babysit for people you know through family or friends.

Babysit Close By

There’s nothing scarier than being in a stranger’s house in the middle of nowhere. Try to take jobs that are in your neighborhood. Not only is it easier for you to get to, but if anything happens there are people that you know close by to help.

Stay in Contact

The parents should leave a number for you to contact them in case of emergencies, but you should leave the number of the place you’re staying at with your family, too (if you don’t have a cell phone handy). That way, no matter what happens, you can stay in touch.

Make Sure the House is Secure

Lock the doors and close the windows and set the alarm (if there is one) if you’re babysitting at night in a new home. Not only do you have to keep yourself safe, but the kiddies too.

Know Where Things Are

As a babysitter, it’s your job to know where the fire extinguisher is, what the number for poison control is and whether or not the kids have allergies or sicknesses you have to take care of. So ask lots of questions before the parents head out for the evening.

Don’t Panic

It may seem like there are so many things to keep in mind when you’re looking after kids, and sometimes things get out of control, but even in serious cases it’s good to stay calm and keep the kids calm. Just take a breath and relax. Babysitting is great most of the time, so don’t sweat it.

MOD MOD MOD I finally convinced my friend that she should take the babysitting course. Now she acts like she knows everything about babysitting, and it is kind of getting on my nerves. Also, right before I was about to give a family that I know well a flyer-my friend gave them one because supposively they "Needed a new babysitter and her mom told this mom that her daughter(my friend) babysits" Now my friend is forbidding me from babysitting them because its "selfish and would be like her taking one of my clients" What should I do? I feel like sometimes, she is controlling my life and taking my freedom. Thank you.

Hey girlie. That's tough. Have you tried talking to her about it. Tell her that she may be taking a bit too seriously. I think that you can give the family your name in case she cannot sit one day. No wrong in doing that.

MODMODMODMOD!
Hi! I love babysitting but I never get any jobs! I know a lot of people with little kids on my street but they never hire me. My next door neighbors use me as the "back-up" whenever the normal one can't come or for emergencies! How could I convince them and everyone else Ican babysit for them?

Hey girlie! What you got to do is give yourself a skill that is unique from all the other babysitters. Sure, anyone can tuck the kids in bed, but say that you will also help them with their homework or try to teach them another language (French, Spanish, etc.) In a competitive market, you can also tell them that you will work for a dollar less than what they are paying the other babysitters (parents love a good deal, especially in this economy). Again, just put yourself one step ahead of the average babysitter

MOD MOD MOD Im an only child in my family and no one in my family has children (if so they live too far away for me to babysit) BTW theres alot of kids where I live but i'd need to put up an add up and I heard that was bad! Can you give me a way to score a babysitting job? Help Me Please!

Hey, girl! There are lots of easy (and safe) ways to spread the word. Ask your mom or dad to tell their friends, co-workers, etc. Word of mouth is the easiest way to let people know you're available to sit! Check to see if your neighborhood or community has a newsletter that you can advertise in (make sure your parents are on board with this one too, though!). You can also start telling all your friends to refer you the the families they babysit for when they aren't available. Good luck!

MOD MOD!!! I am in sixth grade and I am a Red Cross certified babysitter, I babysit my 8 year old sis a lot so ihave a decent amount of experience. But am I still too young?

Hey girlie. I think you could do mother's helping. So you babysit with the mother still in the house. Try looking for those positions.

MOD MOD MOD MOD
I am babysitting a 3 year old and a 6 year old very soon and their parents said they've had tons of babysitters in the past. They all do the same things; watch movies, read stories, play with playdough or make crafts. I need some new fresh ideas on how to keep 'em busy, something creative and unique. Help ME!!

Hey girl! Here are some ideas to keep those kids occupied: Building a Fort out of pillows, having an indoor picnic, act out a play or movie, try to teach them a new language (french, spanish, etc.) Hope these help!
