First period protection

Check these out, too...

  • Why do my fingers turn red when I'm cold?
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
  • What stinks down south?
My mom keeps giving me “the talk” on getting my period. I think I’m ready, but I’m scared that it might happen at school, and I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of everyone. What can I do to stop that from happening?

Hello my friend! Well, first I must congratulate your mother for giving you “the talk” in general. Some mothers are afraid to talk to their girls about periods, so I’m glad to you’re in “the know.”

Relax!
Waiting for your period to show up is nerve-wracking. You’re a little bit anxious, a little bit nervous. You wonder when will it happen, so you can finally become a “woman,” but then you secretly feel a little bit elated every time you don’t feel that cramping feeling everyone talks about.

Now for the bad news…
Unfortunately, there’s no way to know when exactly Aunt Flo is gonna come to town. If you work on becoming more aware of your body, though, you’ll pick up on the warning signs pretty quickly.

Get to know what’s normal.
As you go about your day, think about how your body feels. Does your tummy hurt? Are you getting weird dischage? Are your breasts super-sensitive? Are you moody? When you know what’s normal for you, you’ll know instantly when your time has come. Note if you’re starting to feel cramps, and out-of-the-blue back aches. If you’re starting to get more pimples than usual, and your vaginal secretions are making your feel like you’re peeing on yourself, then your period just might be around the corner.

Be prepared.
Be sure to always have a pad, pantiliner and/or tampon at the ready just in case and make visits to the bathroom with your lady products when you feel a ‘leaking’ sensation. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Good Luck!

Um so I'm going to camp and I'm supposed to get my period while I'm there.... I have only gotten it once so I know it is irregular still. But we go on an overnight outside and we all sleep on a tarp outside and we have to pee in the same hole(eww). Do you have any suggestions that will help? Also one day we go swimming and I don't know how to use tampons..... And one more thing how much supplies should I pack? Thankyou

MOD MOD MOD MOD So it' s been about a year since I got my first period and now my periods have been coming really close together. Like every 14 days instead of every 28 days. Is something wrong? I'm worried.

Hey girl!

Irregular periods are totally normal. They usually happen when your hormones are out of sync. Various things could cause irregularity: stress, bad diet or change in diet, intense exercising, etc. It's really nothing to worry about, though. Since you've only had your period for a year, it's very normal for it to be like this. It usually takes a few years for it to get on track!

I am really confused with all of the different period products... Which tampons are good for beginners? Do they make pads that are for smaller body frames? Do I need to wear a pantiliner with a tampon? Everyone please respond with what's best for beginners!

Hey babe,

They don't make tampons or pads or pantiliners in terms of whether you're a beginner or a veteran.  They only vary in terms of absorbency so that you can handle even your heavy-flow days.

And no, there's no need to double up products by wearing a pantiliner with a tampon.

I'm having a problem. So this article says to learn whats normal for you when it comes to getting your period, but I have NO signs whatsoever! I've had my period for almost a year and I'm always surprised when I get my period and it always happens at the worst times. I don't get cramps at all, I have no PMS, and I don't have any weird cravings. Plus, my periods are always irregular. I'm getting sick of being surprised. Is there any way to be prepared?

Hey cutie!

Every girl has a different experience when it comes to getting their period.  Take a trip to your doctor or ask your mom it there's any possible way to help regulate yours.  It's very common for your period to be inconsistent and irregular for the first few years of getting it.

Mod mod mod mod Hey I am kind of concerned I have been getting discharge for a year but I don't have pubic hair or anything and lately I've been getting cramps too. Is this normal or should I go to my doc?

Unless it smells, has a weird color or consistency or makes you itch, discharge is pretty normal. Though if you're really concerned, seeing a doctor won't hurt Smile

mod! ok so i got my period on may 8, 2011 but its august 22, 2011 and i havent gotten my second one! i have a few questions
1. is there something wrong with me or is this normal
2.i am kinda afraid il say of changing pads in public restrooms (especally school) because of the noise of the wrapper and stuff. anything that can help that?
3. is there such a thing as a "false period"?
4.should i be worried and askk my mom to take me to a doc or just not worry or ignore it? tahnks in advance!!!

Hey girl, this is completely normal! Tons of girls have irregular periods. Don't be embarrassed to change your pad in the bathroom- the noise is not as loud as you think and people usually don't notice it. If you are really worried, there is nothing wrong with talking to your mom about it!

Hey Girl,

Grab a panty liner to control the discharge and keep it from going through your underwear.

I've been having discharge for about a year, when will I get it?

Hey girl,

There's no exact way of knowing when you'll get your period, but if you've had discharge for more than six months, it should come soon! If you're on the smaller side and exercise frequently, your period could be delayed. Check out our Periods, Period channel and our "100 Must-Know Period Facts" article for more help!

WHAT DO I DO!!!!

Hey girl! Of course getting your period is a part of growing up, but so is confiding in your mom. It may be awkward, but she's been there and she understands. Just tell her the next time you guys are out that you want to buy them just to be safe. You're afraid of starting somewhere and not being prepared. She should def understand. If you think about it, it'll probably be more embarrassing to start and not be prepared than working with your mom to get you some ahead of time. You could always go the store with a friend instead of your mom and get them yourself, or you could talk to your school nurse. Any of these options are good, and I hope you can figure it all out Smile Good luck!

Hey girlie. Night pads a heavier and can absorb more because girls don't typically change their pad at night (unless it's really heavy that night). You can wear a tampon in the bath/shower.

Hey girlie,

It's totally normal for your period to be irregular like this, especially the first time you get it! Just try to be patient and be prepared with a pad/tampon in your bag just in case it does come soon. If you're worried about it, it's totally fine to call your doctor and ask about it. MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!!! I'm 11 and I have been getting cramps lately and this light brown on my underwear. Is this my period? Also does vaginal discharge still happen after your period?

Hey girl,

This definitely sounds like the start of your period! Remember to stay prepared and carry some pads around for when it gets heavier Smile And yep, discharge happens after your period as well - but it'll stay clear or off-white in color, of course.

First off, I dont have my period, but can I practice using a tampon? Also, when I get my period, do you wear pads/tampons the whole month, or just while on your period?

Hey girlie! They do say that practice makes perfect, but just make sure you don't leave the tampon in for more than 15 min. When you do get your period, you just have to use the pad/tampon for the week of your period - you can take a break from the pads/tampons for the rest of month or until you get your period again

Hey girlie! If your breasts are tender, that means they're growing. Usually a girl gets her period about 2 years after she starts growing breasts, but don't get anxious if that time passes. Everyone's different, so just enjoy yourself and be on your guard!

Bloating and increased appetite are definitely symptoms of your period! Have you felt cramps yet? Increased discharge? You're 14 so it's obviously on its way, but like you said, we can't know exactly. So just try to be patient and stay prepared with pads just in case Smile

I just woke up three days ago with brown stuff in my undies. It was flowing for a little bit and then it stopped. I thought it was my period but know i am not sure because it has been going off and on like this for three days. For the three days I would occasionally find a tiny bit of brown stuff down their but its not dripping and i think it might be spotting. Can you answer these questions please:
What is spotting?
How long does it usually last?
And how long before you get your period do you get it?
THANKS SOO MUCH!

Hey girl,

Spotting is usually more random than this. Since it's happening over the course of 3 days, I'd say this is probably linked more to your period than it is to spotting. It's natural for periods to start off kind of weird - remember though that most periods start light and brown though, then get heavier and turn red. Your bod might just be extra irregular this month. Don't sweat it! Try to make it through and I'm sure it'll settle down soon. If it goes on for longer than 9 days though (most periods last from 3-9 days), try calling your doc to see what's up.

And when I got my 2nd period it was like 6 months after my first, does that have anything to do with why they are so short now?? So far this period thing has been a hassle so if u can reply ASAP that would be great!

Hey girl, totally in terms of length. As for the gap, during your first year, periods are totes irregular. I'd suggest continuing to mark your calendar and to take care of yourself. With time, your periods will sort themselves out (be thankful you have shorter ones)

Hey girl, sounds like it could be: those symptoms are def PMSy. As for your dad finding out, relax and realize it's not really as big a deal as it may seem. Your dad isn't going to tell the entire world and he'll find out eventually. All girls get periods as they grow up and it just means you're closer to being a woman. Nothing is dramatically different about you; don't let it make your relationships with others dramatically different.

MODMODMOD im 11 and i have been having the symptoms you guys have mentioned in this article, like cramps, sensitive breasts, discharge, and i have been very moody lately. Is it time for me to start carrying around a tampon at school??

Hey girl! Yes, sounds like mother flow is coming your way! If you have any questions you should speak to your mom and or your doctor right away! Goodluck! XOXO

Hey girl! Don't worry! This is most likely signs of an irregular period! However, you should still go to your doctor to get it checked out! Goodluck! XOXO

MOD MOD MOD. well i had my perios for about a year now and im in 6th grade. But sometimes (it sounds gross) i smell it. It smells really strong! I am just sitting in class and it smells HORRIBLE! And i dont want to use scented pads and NOOOOOOOOOOO TAMPONS. i only use pads. Is it the pads that are making this smell? Help!!!

Hey girl! Yes, unfortunately it is most likely the pads that are making this smell! Using a tampon will help prevent the smell! Don't be afraid to use a tampon! There are so many different kinds, I am sure you can find the right fit for you! It takes a little practice so don't get fustrated! Once you get used to them they are super easy! Ask your mom about purchasing you tampons! Make sure to get the kind with an applicator this will make it much easier! Goodluck girl! XOXO

*mod*mod*mod* i am in 7th grade and all my friends have there periods. i have all the signs listed in the article and my mom got her period before she turned 13. im turning 13 in march and my cramps are so bad today i stayed home. do you think im gonna get my period soon? plz help!!

Hey girl! Don't stress! Some girls mature a little faster and get there periods sooner and some mature slower and get theirs later! Due to genetics, it seems like a very good possibility that you are getting your period if your mom got her's around 13 as well! See your doctor if you have any questions!! XOXO p.s. try a heating pad for the cramps!

I am in 5th grade, and I keep getting vaginal discharge. Its been happening for around a year.... What should I do? All myfriends don't really understand "the proccess" so i am arfraid to tel hem! PLease Help!!

Hey girl! Don't worry! Some girls just mature a little faster than other girls and there is nothing wrong with this! If you feel comfortable talking to your friends about the subject then explain to them that you are just going through puberty and that they will be soon. If you aren't comfortable telling your friends then it is no big deal! They will come to you when they start going through the process! I know this can be a little scary at first so talk to your mom or see your doctor right away! They can help steer you in the right direction! Goodluck! XOXO
