25 fantastic things to do on MLK Day

Check these out, too...

  • Celebs give a helping hand in 12-12-12 Sandy relief concert
  • Spread the love: Our top 7 fave charities
  • Why gifting gives ya the warm 'n' fuzzies
  • Give back the green way
  • The easiest way to give back? A philanthroparty!
What was once a simple celebration of the contributions of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., has now evolved into an annual day of service across the U.S.

What can you do?

There are so many ways you can get involved, girlie! Use these to get ya started or head over to Serve.gov for more projects.

1. Grab your gang of gals and go clean up your favorite park.

2. Head over to a soup kitchen and serve dinner on your day off.

3. Volunteer at a local animal shelter.

4. Write a letter to a soldier. Bonus points for a handmade V-Day card!

5. Bring your besties to a retirement home and hang with your elders. I bet they can still beat ya at BINGO.

6. Start a food drive at your school.

7. Tutor struggling students after school.

8. Donate your old books to your local library.

9. Help an elderly neighbor with errands or chores around the house.

10. Participate in a charity race or walk-a-thon

11. Knit scarves and hats…and donate them to a homeless shelter.

12. Make plans to plan trees and flowers after the winter thaw.

13. Host a Teddy Bear toy drive and donate the stuffed animals to a shelter. Local police and fire stations may also distribute donations.

14. Put together a care package for someone in your neighborhood who’s feeling lonely this time of year.

15. Start a pen pal project between your classmates and senior citizens at a nursing home.

16. Sponsor a day of fun at a local hospital. Collect books and toys to be handed out…then chill with the patients and have a party.

17. Host a bowl-a-thon backed by pledges. Use the proceeds to fill the food bowls at a local animal shelter.

18. Set up a pet day at a local nursing home or hospital, if possible, and bring in your pets for some TLC.

19. Recycle an old pair of sneakers. The rubber is used to make basketball courts, tracks and playgrounds.

20. Take some time to play games on FreeRice.com.

21. Are you fab at your sport? See if you can coach or mentor younger athletes.

22. Get some friends together and baby sit during school board meetings or community town halls.

23. Head on over to a local cemetery and tidy up the graves. Pull weeds, plant flowers and give stones a good scrub.

24. Start a recycling effort at your school.

25. Send thank-you notes to those who’ve helped you out this past year.

Omg I did this last year at an elementary school that needed help because it was old.It was soooooooo fun too!I'm related to Malcolm X but its sort of depressing when no one around you knows who he is.

@wednesday1408, maybe there's something you can do about it! Write to your town mayor, state governor, or another local government official pleading your case. You never know what might happen Smile

sometimes i get these pimples on my face that don't go away for a while...i use face washes, but my mom won't let me get the ones with salicylic acid because she thinks they're too strong for my skin. is there any way i can still have clear skin without salicylic treatment?
thx Smile

Hey girlie,

Try an oil-free facewash, which should help to keep your acne under control.

in the medical area(1 clinic, doctors, pharmacy, hospital, and nursing home all grouped together) and down the street from my school they are opening a strip club and a lot of us students walk down that way to get lunch or go home sooo what should i do its gonna bring a lot of creeprs near my school and im kinda freaked out.

Unfortunately, that does seem like it would be kind of creepy. I don't know much about strip clubs but it might not be open during daytime hours, which would be better - and then you would just need to avoid the area at night. If you're going to walk past it, I would make it during the day — or, if there's another path you can take, that might be better. Make sure you always walk with someone else, and when possible it might be better to walk with a parent. Sorry!

I have this idea, but i'm not sure if it will work. I live in a small town, but about 30 minutes away is a slightly larger city and that's where all the malls and everything are. Anyway, I've been wanting to throw a cupcake party and have my friends over to decorate a bunch of cupcake. But I was thinking what to do with the cupcakes afterwards. There's a hospital in the city, and I was thinking maybe we could take the cupcakes there and give them to the children there? Do you think if I called the hospital and asked about this they would approve?

Hey girl, you could. I'd talk to your mom first about it (you'd probably have to make more than a dozen) and see what she thinks. It sounds like it could be the makings of a sweet idea though.

xoxo
