Tampon trouble

Check these out, too...

I used a tampon for the first time, and I couldn't get it out. It was a really small one, but I couldn't get it out and it started hurting really badly. I had to have my sister help, and it took 2 1/2 hours. Is my vagina too small? Do I need to see a doctor?

Don’t freak out, girlie, what happened to you is totally normal. When you first start using a tampon, it always feels awkward, whether you’re putting it in or taking it out. The good thing is that if you got it in, it’s gonna come out one way or another. Your vagina isn’t too small. Chances are you were just freakin’ out a bit, which makes it harder to tug it out. Here are a few tips to help you master the tampon…

Practice
If it takes you ages to insert and remove tampons, try practicing it when you’ve got a block of free time one afternoon. If you don’t have your period but still want to practice, try spreading a little Vaseline or another lubricant over the applicator to help it slide in with ease.

Relax
When you begin to freak out, your muscles down their tense up, making it difficult to put a tampon in or get it out. Take a deep breath and consciously think about relaxing your muscles.

Change positions
It’s easier to insert and remove tampons in various positions, like squatting or standing bent over with a foot propped up on a bathtub or toilet. The pamphlet that comes with a box of tampons usually has some suggestions if you’re having trouble.

There are conditions you could have that prevent you from inserting a tampon, but if you can get it in there, I guarantee you can get it out. It’s uncomfortable at first, so try to stick with the smaller tampons until you get used to the sensation. Good luck girlie!

Hey girlie,

I use Tampax Pearl, but I have lots of friends who use these new Kotex tampons and they love them! I've used them a couple times when I got caught off-guard by my period - didn't notice anything wrong Smile Give 'em a try or, if they make you too uncomfortable, try a different brand. It's totally up to you!

How big is the area where you're inserting the tampon?
I tried my first one earlier, but I wasn't sure what kind of an angle to put it in. So I was wondering if you have a lot of lead-way on the angling, or if it's pretty much small enough that when you get it, you'll know it.

Hey chica,

First, try a smaller tampon, such as a light tampon, which are smaller and you will have a easier time fitting it in. As for the angling, it's about a 45 degree angle and the area where the tampon goes is fairly large as the tampon is able to expand once it is in. Don't worry, tampons can be tricky and it can take some practice.

yes, my guess is you may get it within the month if there is a lot of discharge. Don't worry--just be prepared and get all the pantiliners, pads, or tampons you may need! if it doesn't come this month, it should come very soon!

MOD MOD MOD!!! I've had my period for over 3 years now, but I haven't really started using tampons. I'm a dancer and it would make things much easier. I've tried using them a few times in the past, but it's always been uncomfortable. I got my period yesterday so I decided to try again today. It hurt some to put it in but it was fine after that. I've had it in for about an hour now and it's starting to hurt. Should I take it out??

Hey girly girl! It's possible that you might need to get smaller tampons. However, it's most likely hurting because you're not used to using them. With time, it won't hurt at all.

Hey girlie. Don't fear- it won't get stuck. You just have to find the string to pull it out. If anything (very unlikely though), it could get pushed up into you in which case you might have to search around a little to find it. But it won't get stuck!

Hey girlie. It's okay if the tampon stays in longer than 4 hrs. You can take it out when you use the bathroom if you want. I'm sure you'll stick it in the right hole girl. You will know if it's the wrong hole because it won't feel right or fit right.

Anyway, heres what is probly causin ya trouble: The "hole" is farther down then you would think. It doesn't hurt at all A little vaseline helps A LOT. The only thing I could feel was a little "coldness" from the tampon. Just keep practicin like that and ull get ther. It helped A TTTOOONNN to look in a mirror. I think the best position is sitting with ur legs apart. Hope that helps!!!

I tried to put a tampon in but it wouldn't go in. I've only had my period once but I want to try using tampons. Do you have any tips? Thanks!

Hey girl,

Using a mirror can really help guide you in the right direction! When you're still getting used to tampons, it can be hard to get the right angle or relax your muscles enough to get it right. Take a deep breath and be patient! You can also use a lubricating gel like KY Jelly or Astroglide on the applicator to make it move easier Smile

Hi! So I just started my period and I want to use tampons, is it safe to practice when I don't have my period? And also i don't get the whole angle your supposed to put the tampon at. Thanks!

Hey girlie,

It's really NOT safe to do it when you don't have your period - your period lubricates your insides, which makes it much easier to use tampons. It might hurt if you use them and don't have your period since it'll be dry, which is not how it usually feels at all... so it's a pretty bad time to practice, I'd say. Rather than trying to aim for a certain angle, just try to relax your muscles and feel how your body is shaped when you're inserting it. Go slow!

Mod what is a hymen?

Hey girly! Basically your hymen is kind of a protective layer of skin on the inside of your vagina. Typically, it's broken the first time you have sex. However, it can be broken even if you are a virgin by using tampons, playing sports, riding horses and other things. Also, some girls are born without hymens.

Hey girl,

If you think she's embarrassed or worried that you won't be able to handle it, just tell her that you are confident you'll be able to figure it out (we have tons of advice on GL and there is also really detailed instructions in each tampon box) and you really hope she'll change her mind. Remind her tampons can be more sanitary, more convenient especially when summer comes around, and usually cheaper because you need less of them than pads. Don't pester her with the question, but don't get discouraged. Keep tryin' Smile

Dont worry about using tampons if you follow the directions. They have to tell you what could happen on the box but like one of the mods said they are very safe to use. I dont know of anyone who got tss but I guess it may happen.

And when it comes to putting one in its so important to be at the right angle so it will go in properly. Squatting and using the fingers the right way to slip it in takes practice but once you try it a few times its easy after that.

Hey again chica! Symptoms of TSS include sudden high fever (above 102 degrees), rapid drop in blood pressure, a sunburn-like rash on your entire body, vomiting and diarrhea, severe muscles aches or weakness, bright red coloring of the throat and vagina, headache, confusion or seizures. If you have any of those symptoms, then I would talk to your mom immediately, and get to the hospital. Like I said before though, I really don't think you have to worry. Today, tampons are a whole lot safer than they were years ago. And, the number of TSS cases from tampons has gone down drastically.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!
Ok so I've been using tampons with a regular absorbancy for about 4 months and I was wondering when I should move up an absorbancy. I've found a brand that I like, but the regulars end up leaking in about 3 hours. Should I move up to super, get a combo pack, or stick with regulars? Please help!!! Thank you!

Hey chica! There's no one-type you should use. Judge your period and see how fluid it is. If it's really heavy, use super. If it is not as heavy and you're about to be done with it that month, use the lights. If it's anything in between, use the regular tampons. You will probably need to use light, regulars, and heavys all in one cycle!

I practiced a few times before I started using them so its okay if you are going to start but I dont think its good to do it just to do it.

When starting there is no better way than to,

Read the DIRECTIONS
Watch an online demonstration like on tampax or kotex
Using a LUBRICANT like astroglide or KY Jelly
and Use a MIRROR at first.

I don't have my period yet, but is it safe to try to use a tampon, just for practice?
Thanks.

Hey girlie! They do say that practice makes perfect. Just make sure you don't leave in the tampon in for more than 15 minutes

how do u deal and treat depression all by yourself? iknow u are not a doctor and u need to tell an adult but i was just wondering. what are some ideas besides exercises? any mental things that help? thx , xoxoxo

Hey girl, by speaking up. If you think you're depressed, it's not something you can treat alone. You need the help of a professional because depression is a serious illness. Tell a parent how you feel or a counselor. They'll give you some types on how to keep your outlook upbeat or medication if the depression warrants it.
