What could be a sweeter gift or a cuter outfit accent than a
teeny, handmade heart barrette? Adorable and understated, this DIY goody from
NYC craft shop
Purl Soho is the perfect prezzie for all your girls. Better make
lots, ‘cause everyone’s gonna be grabbin’ ‘em, including you!
What you’ll need:
Small (3/4-inch long), plain girls snap-clips. Find ‘em at
your local drug store.
Pink, white, red and fuchsia felt
Embroidery thread in colors that contrast your felt
A heart barrette template from Purl Bee, available here.
What you’ll do:
1. Cut two large hearts from one color of felt, following
the template linked to above. One will be a back piece, the other a front
piece.
2. Attach the hair clip by snipping a tiny old on one side
of the back felt piece. Slide the arm of the clip through the hole and snap the
clip shut.
3. Sew the felt pieces together with a simple running stitch
using a contrasting color of embroidery thread.
Mix it up: For barrettes that look like miniature
Valentines, make the back piece large than the front and use pinking shears to cut
it out. Use two contrasting colors of felt, and stitch them together with a
thread that matches the back piece in color. You can also make the plain
hearts, as directed above, and cut out a smaller heart in a contrasting color
felt for a “framed heart” effect. How cute!
