Why is wearing a pad so uncomfortable?

Check these out, too...

  • Pad prob! How do I get them from my locker to the bathroom?
  • Have a happier period--yes, really!--with our playlist
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • What stinks down south?
Whenever that "time-of-the-month" comes around, I always have issues with my pad. It rubs me the wrong way, literally! Is there anything I can do to make it feel better?

Don’t worry girl, we’ve all been there! When you first start your period it’s totally normal to feel uncomfortable wearing a pad, but there are loads of ways to avoid that diaper feel.

Find the perfect fit
First of all, make sure ya wear the right sized pad. Pads come in different sizes according to period flow. You don’t need to wear a big pad that makes you feel uncomfortable if you have a light flow, sometimes a panty liner is okay too.

Wear the right undies
Every girl has to get herself a pair of period panties, and that’s because sometimes, if your underwear is too small, pads don’t fit properly. Pads are generally one size fits all (depending on flow), but your panties are a lot smaller than your mom’s! So sometimes, especially if you wear thongs, pads bunch up and just feel weird.

Place your pad perfectly
Like the Goldilocks story you have the get it “just right!” If it’s too far front or too far back it can give you a killer wedgie, so make sure it’s right in the middle where you won’t feel it.

Try tampons?
If you really don’t like the way pads feel, try tampons. Girls are scared of applying tampons, but if you use them properly you don’t feel anything and it can be way more comfortable! If you’re uncomfortable wearing tampons for the first time read the directions on the box and ask someone to stand outside the door and talk you through it.

Hope that helps, and don’t worry, when you get older you’ll get more and more comfortable with your time of the month!

This friday I'm going to my best friends pool party/sleepover and I've been getting signs that my first period is coming and I don't know how to use a tampon and I don't want to use one because I'm not totally positive that I'm getting it on friday so is there a way to casually use a panty liner with a bathing suit?

Oh, I HATE my "time of month"! I get these HORRIBLE cramps the day before. I had homework and my cramps were so bad that I didn't want to work. And to top it off, my week was FULL of sporting events! The next day I had Sports Day (a day where each class competes to win against thier grad level), the next day we went to watch the little kids Sports Day, the next day we did the same thing and I had an 4 to 5 hour track meet right after school. And then the day after the track meet I had another Sports Day cuz ours got partally rained out. And Friday I had a soccer game..... Ya..... Even my mom said that, "Having your first period on this week must really stink!"

I love tampons! I tried them for the first time this past month, I had been having my period for a year & a half. On my first time of trying them the tampon went in very smoothly and I couldn't even tell it was in! For any of you girls that want to try tampons but are a little scared don't be! I really like U by kotex click regular flow tampons. I would suggest trying tampons when your flow is heaviest for easy insertion.

What is discharge? Is it like clearish/yellowish sticky leaking liquid? if so I have had that for a few weeks now and it is really annoying. Does that mean I will get my period soon? I am only 12. Thanks! Lauren C.

Hey girlie. You could def wear a pad if you're really worried about it. I'm sure you're getting closer to the time, but ya never know the exact day, so just try to stay prepared and keep a pad or tampon with you at all times.

MOD MOD MOD MOD
So I have only gotten my period 3 times total, and now I stopped getting them completely. I got my first one earlier this year, and the other 2 were spaced out about a month and a half. I haven't had a period for a little over 4 months now, and I'm starting to get worried. My mom says I shouldn't worry about it because this is still the first year I've gotten my period and I've only had 3 total, but I'm worried that something could be wrong with me. Should I see a doctor or something? Please help. Thanks!

Hey girl,

Mom's right - your first year of your period can be super irregular, so usually you shouldn't worry at all. But it's understandable that you're concerned since you haven't had it for so long now. Try explaining to her that you understand periods are irregular in the beginning, but you're really worried that it has been this long. Ask her if you could make an appointment with your doctor just to get more information, or even if she could call the doctors office to get your questions answered. It's worth it to put your mind at ease with a professional's opinion!

Hey girlie! The only way a tampon would hurt is if it is either too big for your flow or if you don't have it in correctly, Check out this article on how to insert a tampon:

http://www.girlslife.com/post/2009/06/23/007-Period-Advice.aspx as well as this one on getting the hang of tampons: http://www.girlslife.com/post/2010/12/21/I-cant-get-the-hang-of-tampons.aspx

I don't understand when you get your period. Does it come every month? If so, does it come everyday that month? How many times does it come that month? Please explain the concept to me? Thanks Mod's<3(:

Hey girlie. No problem. You should get your period once a month. It will probably last from 3-7 days of each month. Every girl is a bit different. Some girls won't get it every month and will have an irregular cycle. Hope that helps!

I have a question that i need an answer to. I have been having leaks for about the past 6 months. They are usually very small leaks, but it is very uncomfortable to have little wet spots until they dry. At home i change, but I sometimes go though 5 pairs of underwear a day! Does this mean I could start wearing pads??? My mom got her period when she was 16. I'm 13, so I probably will get mine at the same age, but should I wear pads now to stop all this leaking? it's driving me crazy. hope you can help me!

Hey girlie. You're probably getting discharge. Look into wearing pantyliners. They are thiner than a normal pad and will keep ya dry!

I hate wearing pads so I tried tampons, but i'm not sure if they are fitting right. The string hangs down really far, so I think the tampon is not far enough "up". Help!

Hey girlie. That is probably the problem. When you insert the applicator, push it up further so that when you insert the tampon, it's comfortable. It takes a few times to get it right.

Ok I have a strange question... Every guy that I have ever dated has always asked me if I wear a thong. Why does it matter so much for them? Not all of the guys that I've dated have been players so thats not it, but why does that matter so much to them? I feel uncomfortable answering that question but I don't want to feel like a loser so i usually do. I feel so embarrassed when I answer them because I don't wear a thong.
Thanks for all of MOD's help!

Hey girlie -- you should ask them! Especially if you are uncomfortable with answering that question -- it's the only way to get a straight answer, not to mention from the source Smile

Thanks!!

Hey girl, it really all comes with practice. I'd suggest taking it slow the first couple of times and make sure you're inserted it correctly. Be gentle and you'll get the right maneuver down in no time.

I havent had it in 7 months. i got it again this week. first it was heavy with blood clots and everything (for one day) then it got lighter and lighter (with brown clumps ect), now it is heavy again (not as heavy as the first day, but still heavy). is this normal? and when will it end? Frown

Hey chica! I would definately talk to your doc about this. He or she can analyze your diet and exercise habits to see if that has anything do with your period. Smile

MOD MOD MOD: Every time I'm on my period my BFFL tells EVERYONE about it. It is so embarrasing! For instance; One day I left early from school just because my mom thought it would be nice to pick me up early to go shopping since I had been feeling sad lately. I just happened to be on my period and my friend told EVERYONE! I died of embarrasment. Everyone knows I have my period now. Help?!?

Bonjour chicky! That's a tough situation you have there. You need to tell your friend that you don't like her telling the world that you are on your period. If she continues to do it though, then next time Aunt Flo comes to visit, don't tell anyone - except your mom of course.

MOD MOD MOD!! MOD MOD MOD!! MOD MOD MOD!!
There is this guy that I used to have a crush on, but I decided to give up because I saw that he was interested in some other girls. We used to be friends and talk a lot, but I didn't see him and now it got sort of awkward. Anyway, it's been two years since then, we haven't talked in two years, and he's currently single. My BFF who was with me the first time still thinks we make the ideal couple, and she's very, very good when it comes to what guys are thinking. She wants me to become re-aquainted with him and hopefully score myself a date, but I'm always so nervous about approaching him. The only time I see him is at lunch or walking back from lunch, and I'm scared because he's one of the most popular boys and I'm considered much lower. When we were friends he never seemed to care, but I'm scared I'll get poked fun at by the people he sits with. Help?

Hey girl,  I doubt you'll get made fun of. Don't worry about reputations or perceived status. You're fine just the way you are. Be friendly to this guy and ask how his classes are going. You guys were friends before. No reason why you can't pick that friendship back up gradually.

what is best for your period a pad or tampon? Every time i try a pad it's to wide even the really thin ones. I also hear that tampons hurt when you walk around and stuff. Another thing is that the summer is approaching and what do i do if i'm on my period and i want to go swimmming? I don't like my period at all am i the only one?

Hey girlie. Either work. Tampons can be more comfortable once you get used to them and are perfect for swimming and working out. And no, you are not the only one! I think at first girls are excited because it's new. But I, personally, was never the biggest fan of my period. It can be such a hassle and put you in a bad mood : ( But as women, we must go through it. I think it makes us stronger in the end ; )
