In the News: Drop those energy drinks!

Before you chug another Monster, read this. According to WebMD, the amount of caffeine in some energy drinks can be unsafe, causing toxicity in some kids.

The makers of energy drinks don’t tell you is that their drink can contain up to 5 times the amount of caffeine that a soda has. Um, soo not a healthy alternative to anything.

But why do these drinks affect kids more than anyone else? Most adults are accustomed to a regular dose of caffeine by drinking a coffee each morning. Kids and teens however, are not used to the amount of caffeine in an energy drink, and therefore have much stronger reactions to the substance. Because caffeine is a drug, it has addictive qualities, which adolescents
and children are much more susceptible to. Consuming these beverages in large quantities, you risk harm to your bod such as liver damage, kidney failure, and high blood pressure.

While you may not realize it, your body is becoming dependent on seemingly harmless energy drinks if you’re consuming them regularly. Yeah, they definitely do their job by giving you a kick of energy, but in the long run they’re nothing but trouble. Next time you crave that fruity energy boost, kick the caffeine and go for a sugary fruit or full-of-protein sandwich.

I'm happy that I don't drink those things. I also barely drink soda. I like only do that at my friends' birthday parties. Soooo yeahhh, I'm happy that I don't consume a lot of caffeine. I actually rely on GOOD forms of energizing foods.

Wow... I've never had neither energy drinks (they SUCK) nor coffee, but occasionally I'll drink some tea (sometimes decaf, though), but not a lot. About a demi-tasse (is that how you spell it?) every few months.

MOD MOD MOD MOD I REALLY need to learn how to eat for my health and not for pleasure anymore. i have tried MANY things and i need some creative tips on how NOT to eat for pleasure....any tips on how to fix this issue??

Hey girly! You can still eat for your pleasure, just get creative and learn how to make some healthy things. Grab a new cookbook, or some healthy recipes online, and get busy in the kitchen. It'll be fun! Smile

Ive never had an energy drink before. I tried monster - one sip - and it was amazing. But I never had any more than that. But I have coffee once or twice a week. Luckily coffee (at least that I drink) has 15 calories and 0 sugar. I still would be better off without it though

I read this article on Yahoo News and I was amazed at the effects. I had no clue that having energy drinks could have such negative side effects such as strokes and heart damage at such an early age! My parents have never let me drink soda or energy drinks or caffiene. There are plenty of other awesome drinks to choose from than ones that literally rot yourself!

If people knew this, they wouldn't sell them to teens. My parents don't let me have much caffeine, as when I'm on the down side of it I get really easily angered. I don't know why people let their kids drink coffee, Coke, Pepsi, other caffeinated sodas or sports drinks. People should read the nutritional facts before buying. There are tonsa things like that out there- 5-hour energy, for example. People just shouldn't have caffeine- unless it's the very small amount in dark chocolate- then it's actually healthy once in a while. To manufacturers and advertising agencies, we are the perfect people to advertise to, because we're young, inexperienced, and use our parent's money. Just don't fall for it. Otherwise, you could end up very upset with the results. Never drink them again.

I like to make my own fruit smoothies instead. They give you instant energy and taste awesome. Plus it's fun to experiment with different fruits/flavors! Smile
