Did you know video games can help you deal with depression?

Check these out, too...

  • YOLO or "Oh, no"? When taking a risk is the right thing to do
  • 7 ridiculous caffeine-laced products (and why they just might disappear)
  • Want to help Oklahoma City? Here's how
  • Jessie makes fun of...food allergies? Hmm.
  • Wisconsin teen wins Doodle 4 Google contest!
We’ve heard it all before: Video games cause anxiety. They’re too violent. They’re toxic for today’s youth. But here’s one we bet you haven’t heard yet: Video games can reduce an average of 57 percent of symptoms of depression in kids who casually play them.

Crazy, right? We’ve all grown up with the media telling us that video games will turn our brains to mush and make us act out, but according to a study at East Carolina University, that may not always be the case. Certain “casual” video games (family-friendly games such as Bejewled 2, Peggle, and Bookworm) can actually have positive effects on the anxiety level and overall mood of test subjects suffering from various forms of depression.

The games were even found to have both short and long term effects. After 30 minutes of play, subjects’ overall mood and anxiety levels improved, and after one month, the improvement was even more noticeable.

So what do the findings mean? Well, they certainly do not mean that all video games will make you feel happy and calm. The games used in this study were all family-friendly and non-violent, unlike so many games out there today. Rest assured that video games involving guns or other violent plot lines will not have the same results! It could, however, mean that there may be a way to use “casual” video games as a supplement or even substitute to standard therapies or medications for depression.

What’s your fave time-passing game to play? Gab about it, gamer girls!

MOD please help! MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
my family is being really unfair. I have been asking for new clothes for over a year i literally have nothing and i tell my parents everyday iv had serious talks with them so many times and your probably gonna say sit your parents down and try 1 more time but i have it wont work they just make some joke like we will get you some potatoes sacks and you can dye them pretty colors. and i fell bad asking cause i thought we had no money but they just bough by older sister(who is almost 20. has her own job) a brand new laptop no job promotion no birthday they just got her one even tho her old one works perfectly fine. i never get anything because "we have no money" but my sisters get new stuff all the time. and im not shy i make it known i need stuff to. like for example my shoes are literally falling apart and i showed my dad and he told me to glue them. it makes me so angry! MOD MOD MOD PLEASE HELP!!

Hey girlie. Have you thought of babysitting to make your own money? If your parents are being unfair then take matters into your own hands! Once you make your own money, you will feel good buying your own clothes and it will make you appreciate them more : )

MODMODMODMOD!!!
Ever since third grade I have gone through some emotional highs and lows. Not regular kid drama. I mean suicidal behavior, not being social as usual, and a huge decrease in hunger, causing me to loose over 10 pounds. This year it occured to me to do some research on depression to see if I may have it. I think I have atypical depression. I fit all of the critirea. My dad suffers from a different type of depression. He takes medication for it. I would like to be evaluated to see if I do have atypical depression, but I'm afraid; afraid of how my parents, myself, and others will judge me. I'm also afraid because I thought that medication is not meant for children or young teens (I'm 12). I have thought about waiting until I was older to be qualified for medication, but how long can I wait before I do something that may harm myself or others? Please give me your opinion on what to do. Thanks.

hey girlie. I think you should talk to your parents about it. I know
it's hard at first, but that is why we have parents--so they can help us
when we have nowhere else to turn. Maybe seeing a counselor or
therapist will be good for you. If you don't feel comfortable with
medication, you don't have to be prescribed it. Sometimes, it just helps
to talk to someone and unload your fears and stresses. Some things you
can to help yourself include the following: Make a list of 10 things in
your life that make you smile. Hang this list on the wall so you look at
it every day. Then try finding some motivational pictures, quotes,
sayings, etc. and print them out for your wall. if your surround
yourself with happy things and bright colors, you will start to feel
happier. Life is about what you focus on.
