Hopeful teen designer gets Justice

The Kids Wish Network made Breize Burch’s dream come true. Breize, 15, worked as a fashion designer for her favorite store, Justice, for two days thanks to the charity. The teen, who has a blood disorder called sickle cell disease, shared her experience with us…

Girls’ Life: So what was working with Justice like?

Brieze: This store, Justice, is part of Tween Brand Inc. in Columbus, Ohio. They gave me my own office for two days, taught me how to design, how to make color patterns for each trend—my trend was “girl rebel”—how to start trends, how to organize their mock store, how to make graphic t-shirts—tons of things.

GL: What was the most valuable part of your experience?

Breize: Sketching. Seeing how they put their sketches together and how they organize it to know what to do and what not to do. They thought my sketches were good, and they think I know what I want. I’m very precise with what I want and don’t want.

GL: How would you describe your style and designs?

Breize: I would describe my style as more of a military look, colorful military though.

I’ve had a lot of compliments on my style, actually. I think a lot of people would be interested in wearing my clothing.

GL: What is special about your designs?

Breize: [The way they fit.] I have a hard time shopping for clothes because of my size and my body shape. It’s hard for me to find clothes that fit me well, or fit me [at all]. I came up with a way so that they fit everybody, especially my petite size.

GL: What are your influences?

Breize: My mom told me to go out and find better things, because my size is so different [from the norm]. She doesn’t want me to complain about it; she wants me to do something instead of complaining. I also go downtown to Saks Fifth Avenue to see all of their stuff. I see how I can relate it to something different or something no one’s ever seen before.

GL: What are your future goals?

Breize: I want to start my own company. My specialty is shirts, dresses and jumpsuits.

I hope my company will reach the point where it’s well known like Marc Jacobs or Dolce and Gabbana, or even better [known].

GL: What to you want to share with other girls who hope to pursue a career in fashion?

Breize: You have to have a reason to do it. [Don’t become a designer] just because you want to.

MOD I agree with her that most clothes today don't fit correctly. Although I am average size (5'4 and 110 pounds) I can never find underwear that fits right. It rides up in the back, is really skinny in front, and is too wide in between my legs! Do you know of any comfortable and properly fitting underwear?

Hey girl,

The best solution is to take your waist measurements before you go shopping. That way, you know exactly what size you are and will be able to find underwear that fits you properly. Also, the material that you bought could be part of the problem, so try a cotton pair for the most comfort. And remember, your underwear size may not match your normal pants size, so don't be afraid to go up or down a size if that allows you to find the best pair for your body.

I think I had my dream job...hopefully I will be able to work there again this summer. I was an actress in a local opera for the childrens chorus. It was an amazing experience. I met amazing new people. And the lead in this opera, went right to the met (metropolitan opera) and performed there, it was very professional. We got dressing rooms, and a green room, and we got to hang out outside when the weather cooperated. I am auditioning this Thursday for this year's season. People from New York City came upstate to see this opera, it made me feel special. At this time last year, when I was auditioning, I didn't know if I would like it, if it took up to much time, but when I got into it, I realized I loved it! If I get the opportunity for something like this again, I would take it. I really didn't want to last year, but I took the opportunity, and I am so glad I did....so this is my advice to everyone, take chances, you only live once! Smile

I studied about sickle cell in school this year. I think it's great that she's getting this opportunity! I love Justice, but it's a little too expensive for me, but who knows? Maybe I'll end up picking up one of her designs!
