How can I help my fam get through a tough time?

Check these out, too...

  • Tell us: Why is your dad the best ever?
  • I can't stop tearing my hair out--help!
  • In the News: Exercise really does calm you down
  • Should I set up my sis with her crush?
  • Oy vey! Am I allowed to have this crush?
Right now my neighbors are going through a tough time. My mom tells me to not worry about them or her, but I know that it's causing a lot of stress on their family as well as ours. How can I help my family and neighbors get through these tough times?

My darling friend, I wish I knew more about the situation to try to pinpoint a specific solution for you, but unfortunately, I can only generalize the best thing for you to do—try your best not to fret.

Don’t stress

I’ve been where you are, and I am currently battling a similar situation. While it hurts to step aside and let the two troubled parties figure out things by themselves, the situation cannot get any better if you are stressing yourself over it. Soon you will lose concentration on more important things, like school and all the other responsibilities you have, and that will not be a helpful addition to the ongoing problems.

Stay strong

I know it’s easier said than done when you’re told to “not worry,” but you have to try, if not for your own good, than for everyone else. You have to be strong in these times when you’re family seems vulnerable.

Offer up a distraction

If you’re looking for a way to help your family and your neighbors out, suggest an activity to release some tension and ease everyone’s minds. Try a potluck dinner night where the families can get together, enjoy some food and discuss the positive things going on with and around them. Have a movie night where everyone sits in front the tube enjoying some home popped popcorn and a scary flick. Doing these things will hopefully remind them that they are a family and whatever it is that you all are going through, you can get through it together.

I hope that helps. Good Luck!

I feel terrible because my parents are always arguing and fighting and i haven't been able to live a normal childhood i've never done a sport in my life because off the money and all. My dad is very mean to me, and doesnt let do anything including ( sleepovers, hanging out with my friends, go on vacation, etc etc, or anything a normal kid does. and my mom doesnt let me do anything as well. I have no freedom. I cry myself to bed every night because i hate my life so much i want to run away. Please help. What should i do??

Hey girlie,

I'm so sorry things are tough at home. The arguing is enough to make anybody upset - and that stress is probably carrying over into how they treat you. Try to compromise with them. Catch them at a time when they aren't angry or upset from a fight, then ask them if you can strike an agreement about hanging out with your friends (choose one small thing - you can work up to sleepovers and joining sports later). Ask them if you can go somewhere with friends, invite someone to your house, or go to someone's house once a week. Be calm and mature when you're chatting with them so they take you seriously. And be willing to work with them. They might not be responsive to your requests, but by bringing it up calmly without whining, it's a step in the right direction. As for sports, they do cost money so it's tough to join them if you're in a financial bind. But don't worry! There are free clubs and organizations at your school where you can hang out with friends, learn new things, and spend some time away from home. It might be really healthy for you to check those out <3

My best friend (M)just got kicked out of her house by child services. Her mom has a problem where she buys stuff that they don't need and keeps buying stuff so it just piles up. Her house is a complete disaster zone. It really looks like the houses you see on those tv shows. They have 30 days to clean out their house meanwhile anyone under 18 can't stay in the house. Their family has 6 children. Her 2 brothers are in their 20s, her other brother is 17, she's 15, and her sisters are 12 and 8. I feel really terrible and upset. I really want to help them. I offered to let them stay at our house because we have plenty of room, but they already made arrangements. What should I do?

Support her and give her someone to talk to at this time

mod mod mod please read, I know it's long but i need help.back in december my parents got into a really big argument because they were both so stressed and they realized they had messed up on my brothers high school entrance essay that was due the next day. For as long as i can remember, they've both been kinda hot headed especially my dad. They have their little disputes here and there that usually end pretty quickly. They seem happy and are always joking with each other and are already planning how they are going to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversery in a 2 years. I reall myself I have nothing to worry about but it doesn't work. I just started seeing a therapist about my anixety and all this but I think I need someone else to tell me their point of view. Should I be worried? ): Thank you mods for the help

Hey girly girl! It's normal to be worried, but you have to realize that it's also totally normal to fight and argue! In some cases, it's even healthy for a relationship. I'm glad that you're seeing a therapist!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD ok so I've like 4 times in my life and now I LOVE my small town home and i Love my friends soo much, we're so close we call eachother sisters and I've never been able to say that at any other house! But now my parents want to move back to CALIFORNIA!!! And i don't want to leave my friends!!(And don't tell me you'll make great new friends becuase I'm sure I will but I CANT leave my sisters!!) What do I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Hey! the truth of the matter is that if you have to move you HAVE to move.and if you don't want to hear  that you'll make new friends then the reality is that it's going to be hard, but eventually you'll accept moving and learn to stay friends long distance with your bffs. good luck!

My Daddy smokes. On sunday he said he would stop. And he did, but only for that day. I can smell the smoke on him but my mum doesn't. I think he thinks I'm dumb, and I can't smell it. I just don't know what to do because I know he will never stop. I don't want him to have a heart attack or lung cancer and die. How can I help him? I don't want him to lie about not smoking.
