Spring break period probs

Check these out, too...

  • Pad prob! How do I get them from my locker to the bathroom?
  • Have a happier period--yes, really!--with our playlist
  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?

I haven’t gotten my period yet, but what happens if I get it at the beach?!  When I want to go in the water, do I have to use a tampon?

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just point to a date on our calendars and know exactly when our periods were coming?  And it would be even better if that date was convenient (aka not days when you’re wearing white or going to the beach).  Yeah, we wish we could. too.

Unfortunately, there’s no sure way to know when “your monthly visitor” will first come, but odds are in your favor that it won’t come while you’re at the beach. If it does happen then, you will have to use a tampon to go in the water.  Pads in water end up feeling like diapers—not comfy.  Before you start to panic about using tampons, take a deep breath.

No doubt, using tampons can be scary at first, but with a little practice you’ll get the hang of it.  Not sure what to do?  No worries.  There should be instructions (and prob a diagram) in your box of tampons.  Keep in mind a different position or different angle of the tampon may work best for you.  Our bodies are all different, so don’t force it if it hurts.

Most importantly, relax.  It’ll be a whole lot easier if your muscles aren’t tensed up.  And don’t be afraid to ask mom.  We know, kinda awkward, but she’s been doing this for a while and will be totally ok with giving you a little advice.

How hot should the hot water be? and my mom's not answering her phone. Now what?

Hey girl, make it as hot as your tap water gets, but not boiling. And I'd leave your mom a message or send her a text. Check out this link for some helpful tips, then try to relax or take a nap!

HELP!!!!!
I just got my first period, and it's really heavy!!
I also have horrible cramps behind my knees, and in my lower stomach. What do I do about the cramps? and how do I tell my mom, she's not home at the moment. I wanna try tampons, bcuz the pad I'm wearing right now, feels like a diaper. how do u put a tampon in?

Hey girl, don't worry! Try using a hot water bottle to ease the cramps. I'd call your mom and get her advice and let her know what you're going through--I'm sure she'll be happy to help. Here are a couple links to get you started:

I got my first period in january on the 8th. But, obviously, my period skipped over the 8th of this month. I'm leaving for Florida tomorrow, and - with my luck - there's a good chance I'll get it while on vacation. What should I do if my period comes? My mom bought me some tampons... but I'm really afraid to try them. And the diagram in the box doesn't help much.
What should I do???

It takes practice. So you just need to try it out and see if you can get it to work. I was scared at first too, but now i loooove them. So youll get the hang of it. Dont worry Smile xoxo kerra

what do you do when you shower and ur on ur period?? do u have to wear a tampon????

Hey girl! No, there's no need to shower with a tampon in. You're cleaning in the shower anyway, so don't worry about your period. Just put in a tampon or put on a pad once you're out.

Hi, so do you actually have to wear a tampon in the water? Is there anything else you can wear? I'm afraid to start using them. Thank you!

Hey girl,

Your options are tampons and pads, and you sure can't wear pads in the water. They'll absorb all the water and expand like crazy! Just try to relax and practice the tampons during your next period. It might feel weird at first but you get used to them fast. They're all I use now! Smile

Hey!
Don't worry, wear a panty liner in your swimsuit (more discreet than pads) and
just so you know when you're fully submerged in water your flow often slows or
stops. But wear something anyway just to be safe Smile Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD: I'm going on a field trip on the day I get my period. I have a SUPER heavy flow and I need to change my pad ever 3-4 hours but we are going to be gone for way longer then that on a wilderness trip with no bathrooms...what should I do? Overnight pads won't last me more than 8 hours and we are going to be gone for 13. Please help.

Hey girly girl! If you can, I'd bring some tampons along. But, you can only leave those on for 8 hours or less too. I'd make sure to load up on pads.... normally I wouldn't recommend this, but maybe double up on two overnight pads at once. And, wear layers of dark clothing, rather than something like light jeans.

Hey babe,

Yep, you can get your period at any time during the day! All sorts of things can trigger yeast infections, including certain panty materials and even some pads. But no worries, using pads doesn't mean you will definitely get yeast infections - just remember to change them at regular intervals and to keep yourself clean and dry "down there" whenever you can. That means regular showers and some "freshening up" when you think it's necessary. This way, you avoid any kind of yeast infection that might pop up Smile

Hey girlie. I've worn tampons since I started and nothing bad has ever happened to me. I think you will be fine. Just tell her that you want to start using them, especially because summer is coming up- and they're perf for bathing suits. Then, you could just say that you've already practiced putting one in and it didn't hurt you. If it hurts, it's because the tampon isn't pushed far enough in.

MOD,
I am so afraid to use a tampon. People tell me that it hurts to put one in! I am going to the beach soon, and I am afraid my period will come, since it is so irregular these days. Does it really hurt?
Thanks!

Hey girlie. It only hurts when you don't push it in far enough. That usually is what happens the first couple times until you get used to using them. After the top of the applicator is inserted, push the up the bottom of the applicator to insert the tampon. If it feels uncomfortable, use your hands to actually push the tampon in further. Good luck!

Hi Girlslife!
My friend is always saying your period stops in the water, and she's so sure about it! I've never actually researched but I'm pretty sure it's not true!Is it? You're period doesn't stop just because you're soaked in water...does it? Lol asking a lot Laughing but I'm just confused...and another question...
I get really heavy discharge right before my period but that's the only time when it's really heavy. Well, I just got off my period and I have really heavy discharge right now and I have cramps but it just ended last week. What is that? Is it normal?
thx Smile <3

Hey girl! Truth is, your period can stop when you're in cold water...like a pool or the ocean. Also, I'm not sure about having so much discharge right before or after your period. It should be when you're ovulating which is halfway through your cycle. You should probably ask your mom or doctor about it just to be safe. Hope this helps!

You have no choice, you need to wear a tampon if you are going to go swimming. If you have never used one I would start, its not that hard you just have to get used to using them. There are so many good articles on gl that goes over how to use them. Remember,

Relax
Use Lube if needed
Get at the right angle and position
And never leave them in to long

Its that easy, just make sure you get the right size and kind, we are all different.

I got mine on my birthday last year and I was having a pool party. I had to sit out but my friends didn't mind at least.

I've had my period 3 / 4 times and I'm worried because I'm taking a vacation this summer to the beach!! I've barely even gotten a hold of pads yet! So I hope I don't get it then.

Haha I remember that I didn't have my period yet and then we went to Florida for a little over a week and I got it there. Which is weird, because I had decided three months earlier I would get it in Florida. Just trust your gut feelings, hun.
Also, the girl in the picture is GORGEOUS!!!
