Over half a million U.S. teens have an eating disorder

Check these out, too...

  • 10 cinchy ways to burn 100 calories
  • 3 times it's OK to tell your bestie's secret
  • In the News: Exercise really does calm you down
  • Do guys only care about chest size?
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
Scary fact: According to government research, over half a million U.S. teens have or have had an eating disorder as reported Monday in Archives of General Psychiatry.

The most common disorder documented was binge eating, which affected 1.5-percent of the teens studied between ages 13-18. Next on the list came bulimia (binging and purging) and anorexia (not eating). Also, 3-percent of teens exhibited troubling symptoms, but were not diagnosed with full-fledged eating disorders.

Just as worrying, over half of the affected teens also suffered from depression, anxiety, or other similar disorders, suggesting a connection between eating and mental disorders.

So how can you tell if you or your bestie is suffering from a disorder that affects so many? Be on the lookout for warning signs such as severe weight loss/gain, denial of hunger, reduction in food intake, anxiety about weight, and forced purging after eating. If you or someone you know show some of these signs, speak up, girlie! Don’t let them or yourself become a part of this terrifying statistic!

IF YOU OR A FRIEND IS SUFFERING FROM AN EATING DISORDER:
National Eating Disorders Association
The National Eating Disorders Association’s website, edap.org, offers information for teenagers about the signs of eating disorders, treatment programs, referrals, and programs in their area. Their hotline, 1-800-931-2237, offers immediate help.

Mirror Mirror
The Eating Disorders Mirror Mirror site, mirror-mirror.org/eatdis.htm, offers guidance to those who are on the road to recovery and support to those who are looking for it. There are also links to other resources and descriptions of symptoms and warning signs of eating disorders.

MODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMOD I think i might have an eating disorder, cuz i don't eat very much (I'm a competitive dancer and i have serious workouts 3 times a week, but i don't eat b4 or after them) and i workout a lot. I don't know what to do, and I'm scared. HELP!

Hey girlie -- you should talk to your doctor about your eating habits/concerns.

MOD MOD MOD
My BFF just told me her dad doesn't hit her, but sometimes he raises his hand as a threat and things like that. I told her I wouldn't tell, but should I?

Hey girlie --  if you feel your BFF is in danger or may be suffering some type of serious physical harm, you should most certainly talk to an adult about your concerns.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this because a year ago, I learned about eating disorders and vowed never to have one. But now, I am one of the sufferers. I don't have a full-fledged one, but I still weigh hardly enough for my height, and I wasn't getting enough calories or protein, either. I'm a dancer and I needed all the energy I could get. So, I'm telling you girls out there to never let an eating disorder take control of your life. As long as you excercise and eat healthy, you should never have to worry about your weight! I'm starting to add more food in my diet, but it's hard to get rid of the frame of mind that all fat is bad, because that's not true! God bless you all and hope you all stay healthy!! <3

MOD all of my friends think i'm anorexic cuz i'm one of the skinniest girls in the school, whereas most girls are over weight, so they conclude it is not normal to have a model thin body and it really irritates me when one of my friends try to talk with me and ask me if i'm annorexic. i'm starting to get paranoid if i have an eatting disorder because i will not eat anything with sugar or too many carbs, and eat very little at lunch and for a snack, a simple cereal bar, and im never hungry. is that an eatting disorder?

Hey girly girl, it's totally great to want to be healthy, but you shouldn't over-do it. It's OK if you eat junk every now and then. Also, make sure that you're getting enough protein and nutrients throughout the day so that you stay healthy.

xxx
