We all love to snuggle up with girl’s best friend at the end of a long day, but can cuddling with your pet have some major consequences for you? According to the Center for Disease Control, yes! A recent report warns that this can put you at risk for catchy some seriously icky bugs!

It may be comforting to have your dog or cat curl up with you in bed, but be warned! The report, published in February states that “pets can bring a wide range of zoonotic pathogens into our environment,” These pathogens are infectious agents that can be easily transmitted between animals and humans.

And, heads up! Bruno Chomel, lead author of the study and professor of zoology at University of California, Davis warns that children and people with weaker immune systems are especially at risk.

It may not be common for pets to pass on illnesses to their owners, say the authors, but it can still be serious. Some documented sicknesses include meningitis and even the bubonic plague!

How can you fight off the risk? Be smart! Wash hands frequently and be sure to take your pet to the vet for regular check-ups. Don’t let your pet lick any open wounds you may have, and no kissing on the lips! It’s best not to let any animal sleep in your bed with you, too. But, that doesn’t mean you need to stop showing your love for Rover, you just gotta be aware of the risks.
