Can I confide in a teacher?


 
I’m thinking about telling my health teacher something really big that has happened to me. It’s a terrible, awful secret. But would she have to tell someone else about my problem?

 

Dear Confused,

It depends. Many secrets can be kept confidential. But if your teacher thinks you are being hurt, could hurt yourself or might hurt someone else, then she may be required to tell people who can help you. Some kids really are ready to get out of a bad situation, even though things could seem worse before they get better. Others are not quite ready to tell all, so they may choose to make an anonymous call to a hotline (like the National Domestic Violence Hot Line at 1-800-799-SAFE or the Covenant House at 1-800-999-9999) for info and support.

my grandpa passed away a month ago. he was diagnosed with cancer last year and every thing just went down hill from there. he got mersa and mrs in his blood and colin. my friends ask whats up and i tell them and there like 'oh i'm so sorry' but i told them and NONE of them came too the funeral my dads friend who has two kids my age came, i see them more than MY close friends. Should i be mad at them or just let it slide under the radar?

I think my teachers is playing favorites and i feel bad because all my friends are his favorites. i know this is a weird q becuase you cant control peoples favorites but do you think there is any way for me to get on his good side so I end this year feeling good? thankss!

MODMODMOD In middle school I've been getting bullied. I'm afraid to tell my teachers or principal since the matter could only escalate after that. She might seek revenge for me telling. What do I do!? I've considered cutting myself because I have a razor blade sitting right here on my desk. I feel that I want to try it. I've even considered suicide, but when I try, I swell up with thoughts of family and friends. What do I do to handle the bullying? Help!




Hey girl, think this through, first of all: will hurting yourself really stop this girl from hurting you? Or will it just show she's won in lowering you enough to make you consider that? What you're dealing with is serious and something you shouldn't have to deal with alone. You need to talk to an adult as soon as possible, especially if you've had thoughts of suicide. Talk to your parents about this bullying and a guidance counselor. Your counselor will keep you safe/prevent this girl from seeking revenge, trust me. Teachers and principals' job is to make school safe for students but they can't if you don't tell them there's a problem. So stay strong, hang in there and speak up. Things will get better; don't let this girl win.
