Think you've got an eating disorder? Help is on the way

Check these out, too...

  • Tell us what YOU think: How do you boost your body confidence?
  • Why do my fingers turn red when I'm cold?
  • 3 times it's OK to tell your bestie's secret
  • Do guys only care about chest size?
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
I am a 15-year-old girl, I play volleyball and I weigh about 97 lbs. Lately, I have been feeling really fat. I am not comfortable in my bod. I feel like I might be developing an eating disorder. What should I do? I don’t want to tell anyone.

It’s natural for tweens and teens to feel uncomfortable in their changing bodies. And we’re sorry to say that for most of us, it’s normal to dislike parts of our bods from time to time. But when you let these toxic thoughts get out of control, they can do serious damage. Whether you think you’re slipping down the disordered-eating spiral or have a full-blown eating disorder, GL is here with 12 dos and don’ts to help you get back to being healthy.

Do talk it out. I know it’s awkward and hard to talk about, but eating disorders have a frightening way of rooting themselves in your mind. Your parents or a trusted adult mentor can help you find the professional help you need.

Don’t be afraid to get help. Conquering an eating disorder isn’t as easy as eating three full meals every day. The way you view your body and the things you put into it are hard to change. Meeting with a pro is a hugely helpful way to get your brain back on track.

Do train with a pro. If you want to revamp your body image, exercise is a great way to do it. But you have to be careful not to go overboard, especially when your body is recovering from disordered eating habits. Working with a professional to develop an exercise plan will help keep you toned without overtaxing your bod. Yoga is a great activity to consider because it encourages a positive outlook for your mind and body, and can keep you fit without working your body too hard.

Don’t hide it. Wearing baggy clothing or sneaking off to purge might seem like easy ways to keep your eating disorder a secret. These behaviors do far more harm than good, though, so back away, babe, and be honest with those who love you and yourself.

Do focus on feeding your body. Many girls develop an eating disorder because they need some sort of control over their lives. Visiting a nutritionist to figure out exactly what your body needs to function—and then following her advice—can help you gain control of your body in a healthy way.

Don’t pull away. When you’re struggling to regain healthy habits, it’s tough listening to your friends ask you how you’re doing or your parents inquiring about your daily diet. But don’t use their lack of understanding or tact as a reason to pull away from them. You need support. Explain how you’re feeling and how they can help you best.

Do snack. If the idea of eating three large meals a day is off-putting, try consuming smaller meals with snacks scattered throughout the day. Think celery and peanut butter, apples, Greek yogurt smoothies, almonds and cheese and crackers.

Don’t think of food as the enemy. It’s not! Splurges are okay, sweetie, so don’t feel guilty about munching on those homemade treats your bud bakes or an extra helping of fresh strawberries ‘n’ whipped cream. Resist the urge to purge and savor the delicious things you consumer. Remember: Your body needs food to keep you doing what you love. Food is a good—make that great—thing.

Do seek out healthy friends. If your group of girlies is focused on looks 24/7, it’s a fab idea to expand your horizons with some new buds. Surround yourself with chicas who are positive about themselves and the world you live in, and you’ll feel yourself adopting their mindset. Girl power!

Don’t lie. It’s tempting to tell a friend or family member what you think they want to hear, but plastering on a smile and pretending that life is just peachy won’t help you get better. If you’re feeling uncomfortable with a convo, simply say, “I really appreciate your concern, but I’d rather not talk about it.”

Do look for a new emotional outlet. Take time to think about why and how disordered eating became a habit. Perhaps your parents are going through a divorce, or school is getting super stressful. Whatever the reason is, try to channel your emotions in a healthy way. Take up painting or ceramics or drawing. Write music or plays. Start keeping a diary. Do what makes you feel happy.

Don’t go through it alone. There are tons of hotlines and support groups out there that will allow you to remain anonymous if you so choose. Getting advice from someone who’s walked in your shoes can help you feel less isolated. They can also give you good advice about dealing with concerned friends and fam, and dealing with your disorder.

For starters, you can call the National Eating Disorder Helpline toll-free at 1-800-931-2237 or visit their website for more information about treatment options at nationaleatingdisorders.org.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
this is urgent please answer it. I'm anorexic (I knew I was since September but I was too ashamed to tel anyone) and I have reccently started cutting my self. I know it's bad I just can't stop. I always get teased at school and I get bullied. Sometimes I feel worthless and depressed so I cut. And I've been going to this councillor lately to talk about bullying and she saw a cut on my wrist and she asked me if there were any more issues I needed to talk about. I was too nervous to tell her so I said no. I feel really bad for not telling her, but Im too scared to tell anyone! I can't really explain the situation either. Its kind o hard to explain what I'm going through. Sometimes I do eat but then I feel really bad (even if its just like a banana) and I puke it out. Please help what should I do!??

Hey hun. You should always tell your counselor the truth, that's what they're there for! They 100% want to help you and will only steer you in a positive direction. I'm sorry you're going through a rough time and I really hope you and your counselor can discover how to help you best. If your still too nervous to talk to your counselor face to face, try this anomynous counseling hotline 1-800-999-9999 and  Nineline.org

Hey, I really need HELP PLEASE... So lately everytime I eat I feel really bad after.. Like I always think about wanting to make myself throw up.. I never do.. But I constantly think about it after I eat and I feel fat.. I'm 5'6 and I weigh 116ilbs... And also I look at the calories on everything before I eat it... I don't like eating anymore.. I feel so terrible and fat after
I eat something... Even if it's just something small... Is there something wrong with me.? Should I tell someone about it.? I'm scared... :/
P.S. I see a councilor.. Should I tell her.?

Hey girl,

Give yourself a break! You are a perfect size, and it sounds like you are super healthy! You should definitely talk to your counselor or another trusted adult about how you have been feeling so that they can give you pro advice. You should never make yourself throw up, and as long as you are being active and eating mostly healthy foods, you don't have to count your calories! Talk to your counselor as soon as you can and remember that you are so, so beautiful exactly how you are! xo

I'm muscular but i think im fat because im about 5 feet tall and weigh ((weight hidden by mod)) pounds. Please help im not sure if i should diet because idk if muscles are going to make me weigh more or if im just fat. Please help.

Hey girlie,

Muscles weigh more than fat, so yes you will weigh more if your muscles are toned and defined. Basically, if you're in shape! Instead of looking at the number on the scale, make sure your lifestyle is healthy. Don't diet, but eat well - well-balanced meals full of lean meats, fruits, veggies and grain. Exercise a little every day (and it sounds like you won't have a problem with that!). If you're treating your body well and making sure it's healthy, you don't need to diet or lose weight. It's all about health!

MOD! Please help!
I've been anorexic for a month or two, and I went to get help. I explained the situation to a close teacher at my school, and she talked to the guidance counselor, and they're going to help me. It's just, I don't really know how to explain this to them.
Starving myself isn't a choice anymore, I just do it. It's like the way some people bite their nails -- it's a horrible habit that I can't break. Except worse, because anorexia can kill me. It's just like, I want to stop, but I can't. Is there a point where anorexia stops becoming something you choose to do (as in starve yourself) and becomes something you do naturally?

Hey girlie,

It absolutely can become a sub-conscious habit after a while. Your body has been trained not to eat, so you'll have a hard time breaking out of that habit. But it's possible and LOTS of girls have overcome anorexia with the help of professionals! Just be honest with them and express your feelings the best you can. Whether it's "I want to stop, I don't know why I'm doing this" or "I want to be thin. I know it's bad, but I do," it's really good to get all these thoughts out, whether you think they make sense or not. Your counselors have heard it before because you're not alone - and they'll know what to do to help <3 Trust them!

You need to eat at regular intervals. If youre not hungry and its because of insecurities then that is a eating disorder. If not then im not sure. I would suggest you talk to your school counselor about this. Theyll be able to give you really good advice. xoxo kerra

I'm 11. I can't stop snacking. I'm not hungry, I just need to nibble on something. When I was little, I was never hungry, so in Summer, I only really ate dinner. But I fixed that. What should I do so I won't want to eat all the time? I wouldn't say I'm fat, cause I don't think I am. .. Idk Smile Should I chew gum? I like gum. Smile Thanks, you rock!

Hey chica,

I don't think you're fat either - but if you are curious about normal weights for your height, ask your doc! As for the snacking, try to replace your nibbling habits with something else. Every time you have a craving, pick up your journal and write about it. Get online and play a game of solitaire. Go outside and walk around the block. Replace that craving with some other behavior and you'll start to trick yourself into not needing those snacks at all! But remember, if your belly rumbles and you're hungry, don't deprive yourself Smile

Thanks a ton,~.~_DD_is_the_best_~.~

Hey girl,

How much you weigh and whether you are over or underweight also depends on how tall you are. Everyone is different. I would talk to your doctor if you are worried about your weight.

You are not fat at all! I'm 12, and I weigh about 95 pounds, and sometimes I feel fat too, but just remember if you stick with moderation, you'll be in good shape. So if you're playing volleyball and gettting excersie and everything then that's good, and as long as you eat junk food in moderation, and stick to healthy food then you are probably very healthy and not even close to fat! 97 is actually really skinny for a 15 year old! So don't sweat it!

Hey ok i have a problem and its kinda stupid but its been bothering me... ok my parents recently got a divorce and im ok about that. but, im 14 so i cant drive to or from schoool by myself. im fine w my mama getting and taking me but i dont like it when my daddy does. he has a lot more money then my mom does, but he won't spend it on cars. he has a few cars but all of them are rlly old and embarrising. i no this is rude but its true! he knows it 2 but he says he doesnt care how it looks or wat it makes us look lik. one of them is a REALLY old station wagon thats light brown and is rlly loud. he only got it for 200 dollars if that shows u how ugly it is. some other ones is a huge green church van kinda veichle and a little brown lebaron that needs fixed up. wat can i do about this? and wat do i say 2 ppl who say something? thanks i no i sound snobby but its been botherin me. thanks!!

Hey girlie. I know you're embarrassed but think about it this way- you are the one that notices it. I doubt your friends will say anything and if they do, just say "Yea, it's pretty embarrassing" and laugh it off. Remember that you are lucky and have parents who care and a car that takes you from point A to point B. Lots of people aren't as lucky as you. Hope this helps!

MOD!!! I have a friend at school who is recovering from anorexia. She's in my lunch period, so the people who sit at my lunch table and I are kind of responsible for making sure she eats something during lunch. Once she started going out with her boyfriend, she was feeling really lovey dovey and actually eating bits of a sandwich, which was a real improvement. But lately, it kind of wore off (she's still very happy with her boyfriend, though) but she's having some family probs that are trying to get worked out in therapy. Now she can't even eat two spoonfuls of yogurt. I've tried every trick in the book, but she just refuses to eat even a little bit. she says that she wants to but she just can't. Do you have any ideas of what I should say to her to get her to eat? Please help! Thanks a bunch

Hey girly! I'd definately talk to someone about this... maybe a guidance counselor or teacher that you trust. I wish I knew what to say, but I don't want to give you the wrong advice. Please, talk to someone about your friend...

HI mod so i just tried hair removal cream for my bikini line. It worked fine.. i have a gymnastics competion right around the corner and my hair down there is long so even if i did do my bikini line some of it sticks out. I DON NOT WANT TO TAKE IT ALL OUT. Would putting a tiny bit of gel for it to stick together and not move around be fine?

Hey chica! I'm not sure what you mean by it sticking together, but it is also possible to trim down there if you're worried about it being too long. I would use the hair removal cream for your bikini line definitely if you're worried about any sticking out. If you're looking for anymore tips head over to our "Your Bod" section and check out the Down There portion of that channel. There are posts of girls going through some of the same issues. Hope this helps Smile

Hey girl,

The most important thing is having a healthy lifestyle and treating yourself well - if you exercise regularly and eat well most of the time, I'm sure you're totally fine! If you're worried about any kind of body/health/diet questions, don't be scared to ask your doctor at your next appointment. A professional opinion can sometimes make you feel a lot better Smile

So I really need some ideas to help me loose weight. Thanks so much

Hey girl,

Try doing some lower impact things, like biking, swimming, yoga, and weight-lifting with your arms. They'll keep you stay in better shape until you can get to the doc!

Hey girlie,

Read this article! It's not necessarily a sickness - anger is normal and, like the article says, all that matters is learning how to control it. I think it'll really help you to remember these things! <3

But there is this other girl who likes him. I'm afraid that if we don't text for a while it will make him think I don't want the relationship I was so clost to having with him. I'm to shy to text him first though. What should i do and say?

Hey babe,

You've given him a few days - there's nothing wrong with texting him first now! Just send him a casual note being like, "hey! what's up?" Give him time to respond, then see if you can carry a little convo. He might have stopped texting because of this girl, but he could just be busy and/or tired of always being the one to text first. If he seems excited about or "into" your conversation when you text, I wouldn't worry about it! Smile

MODMODMOD I have a question. If starving yourself makes your body gain weight why are anorexics so skinny?

Hey girlie. Initially, when you begin to starve yourself your body does not automatically lose the weight. After awhile though, if you stop eating, your body becomes malnourished and you become very underweight. That's how it works in simple terms. If you're really interested in it though, research it.

MOD MOD MOD PLEASE HELP!!!  I have rheumatoid arthritis in my knees so I have to go to a specialist for this. I went to the doctor in March, he said I've gained 9 POUND since december. He didn't excatly say that I'm fat but I feel really fat. I have to go back in June and I'm really scared that I'm gonna gain more wait between now and then. I'm 12 and weigh 161 lbs. Everytime I eat something with salt or chocolate, I feel really fat and I'll cry myself to sleep that night. How do I lose weight fast? How do I help not crying myself to sleep? I feel really fat PLEASE HELP MOD!!!! Thanks!

Hey girlie. I'm sorry you're not happy about the way you look. Being satisfied with your appearance is something everyone struggles with. First, try discussing it with your doctor. See which weight bracket you're in, and then see if he has any recommendations (if need be). The biggest thing that you have to remember is that weight loss isn't a fast thing. You have to commit to eating the right foods and exercising frequently. Check out some of GL's posts in the Health& Fitness section. Good luck!

MODMODMOD
What good can come from yoga? I do a yoga class once a week and my parents dont see a reason for yoga. Please explain Smile thanks!

Hey girlie. Yoga is actually very good for you. It depends what type of yoga you do, but generally it helps with flexibility, your core muscles and relaxation. There are many poses that are hard to do and require all types of muscles that you don't generally use. I personally love to do yoga and find it very beneficial.
