Tampon trouble: It still hurts!

Check these out, too...

I started using tampons a year ago and when I try to put them in, I get really bad pain even though I’m not new at it. What am I doing wrong?

Owwie! I’m sorry you’re still feeling this discomfort. Believe it or not, a slight feeling of discomfort when you insert a tampon isn’t unusual. To alleviate the pain you describe, there are couple of things you can do…

1. Try a different angle. Most of the time, pain when putting in tampons occurs because we try to slide them in at a less-than-optimal angle. Your vagina is basically a straight passageway, so when you poke in an applicator at an angle that doesn’t follow the line, you might be hitting the walls of your birth canal, which can lead to a li’l bit of temporary pain.

2. Slow down. Easy girl! Take your time when you’re putting in an applicator, especially if it’s cardboard. Rushing can nick and pinch the sensitive skin down there.

3. Go small. The length of your vagina changes based on a lot of different factors, so the super-sized tampon that slid in easily yesterday might be a tight squeeze today. If you get the tampon in and just can’t make it feel comfy, pull it out—slowly—and try a smaller size. If all else fails, you can always revert to pads, so keep a few close by.

4. Lubricate. If you’re too dry down there, the tampon won’t slide in very easily. Put a drop of lubricant on the tip of the applicator and go slowly, and you shouldn’t have any trouble. If you don’t have any lubricant on hand, be patient and wiggle the tampon around a bit to make the best of your natural lubrication.

MOD MOD MOD! I tried all these tricks using a slim size tampon with lubricant and different angles but I still can't seem to get it in! Any help? I am going to a waterpark in a few and my period started again for the month. Help!

You just gotta calm down, babe! Sometimes there aren't any "tricks" to make it easier - you simply have to set up a lil mirror so you can see what you're doing, take deep breaths, slide it in slowly, and let your bod adjust to the tampon inside. Remember all of these tricks (the small tampon, the lubricant, to adjust where you're inserting it and at what angle) and keep trying. It's normal for the first few times to be tricky or even feel a little uncomfy, but keep in mind all of the things you'll get to do with the tampon in - the water slides, the lazy river, the convenience of not having to change a pad so often! <3 You'll get the hang of it!

Sorry to bother, but I really need an answer to a question I have. In a little over a month I'm starting school and I have a swimming class. I've been trying to use tampons for over a year, and I still can't get them to go in. Every time I try to insert one, it hurts! Is there any way I can swim with a pad in (perhaps tie it in? :3) or another option besides tampons? If not, please can I have some tips on how to make tampon insertion easier?
Thanks.

Hey girl,

NO, you can't swim in pads! The way pads work is that they absorb liquid that touches them...now imagine that in a pool. The pad wouldn't last a second! Unfortunately there aren't really any other options besides tampons or getting out of the class. I think tampons are the easier and less embarrassing option here Smile It might hurt or feel uncomfortable the first few times you use it because your bod is getting used to having a tampon there, but I promise you get used to it after a little while! You have to stick with it though, reminding yourself to stay relaxed and all of the benefits of using tampons. You'll get the hang of it!

So I just tried a tampon yesterday because I was going swimming. Turns out there not as bad as they seemed. So I'm using pads currently, but I have no more. I have to use tampons. I have light and regular. I'm not sure which one to use. Every 4-5 hours I change my pad. 1. Which one should I use? 2.How can I tell when to take out my tampon. I heard if you leave it in too long you could get TSS. Also 3. How can I help period cramps, besides medicine? Thanks in advance(:

Hey girl, 1) it really depends. I'd go to the drug store with your mom and pick out a brand with her and size type. 2) Every couple hours is the general rule. TSS, by the way, is very rare. The reason to change your tampon (and pad) is to keep things clean and prevent infection. 3) Rest helps and ice.
