What the heck is discharge, anyway?

Check these out, too...

  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • Do guys only care about chest size?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
  • What stinks down south?
I don't know what’s wrong with me! Sometimes I get this feeling like there's something gooey between the flaps down there. But, I don't get anything on my undies except for a little bit of wetness. Is this discharge?

You betcha, babe. That goop is indeed discharge, and it’s a sign that slowly but surely, your body is maturing. Read on for 411 on vaginal discharge.

When will I start getting it?

Though everyone is different, most girls start seeing discharge in their undies about 6 months to a year before they get their period, and it sticks around through womanhood.

What is it?

Vaginal discharge is made up of fluid produced by glands in your vagina and cervix that flows through your system and keeps it clean.

What causes it?

It’s caused by the changing hormone levels in your bod, and the way it looks or smells can be affected by stress, health, diet, menstrual cycle, medication and sexual arousal.

What should it look like?

Healthy discharge is clear or a milky white in color. Depending on the person and the causes above, it can be thin and runny, gooey or goopy, or stringy. If you see green or grey discharge, you should phone up your doc’ because you might have an infection. Brown discharge is usually old blood your vagina is getting rid of after your period. If you haven’t had your period yet, you might want to check in with your doc, just to be safe.

What does it smell like?

Discharge has a slight odor, but there isn’t one “right” smell. Every girl is different. If it’s particularly strong, though, or you experience burning or itching, you should see your doctor.

Can I wear a pantiliner?

Sure, if it makes you feel more comfortable. The dampness, however, can irritate your skin, especially in summer months. We recommend wearing 100-percent cotton panties and loose clothes that allow your skin to breathe.

How should I keep clean down there?

A splash of lukewarm water when you’re bathing will do the trick. Do not use feminine washes—they disrupt the natural pH that your vagina maintains.

MOD MOD!!!
So I've had discharge for a LONG while and have started my period and STILL have it! So what I'm wondering if that's normal???

Hey girl, when did your period start? If it's been over a week, it may be worth talking to your mom about. As for discharge, that's normal to keep having. Don't sweat it unless it smells off.

MOD why do girls well yes im a girl dont worry, mature faster than guys

Hey girl, it's all hormonal so unfortunately there's no exact, clear cut answer why girls come first. Girls usually start puberty at 8-13; guys at 10-15. You could maybe say it's because more changes take place in a girls' bod: she develops breasts, grows taller and begins to have periods (so she can someday have children).

So when you get a white discharge thats means you're most likely to get your period within 6 months??

Hey girlie! When you start seeing discharge, yes, you period will most likely come within 6 months to a year. But all our bods are different so don't worry if it takes a little longer!
