What the heck is discharge, anyway?

Check these out, too...

  • Does it hurt when you first get your period?
  • Do guys only care about chest size?
  • I need longer pads! How do I tell Mom?
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
  • What stinks down south?
I don't know what’s wrong with me! Sometimes I get this feeling like there's something gooey between the flaps down there. But, I don't get anything on my undies except for a little bit of wetness. Is this discharge?

You betcha, babe. That goop is indeed discharge, and it’s a sign that slowly but surely, your body is maturing. Read on for 411 on vaginal discharge.

When will I start getting it?

Though everyone is different, most girls start seeing discharge in their undies about 6 months to a year before they get their period, and it sticks around through womanhood.

What is it?

Vaginal discharge is made up of fluid produced by glands in your vagina and cervix that flows through your system and keeps it clean.

What causes it?

It’s caused by the changing hormone levels in your bod, and the way it looks or smells can be affected by stress, health, diet, menstrual cycle, medication and sexual arousal.

What should it look like?

Healthy discharge is clear or a milky white in color. Depending on the person and the causes above, it can be thin and runny, gooey or goopy, or stringy. If you see green or grey discharge, you should phone up your doc’ because you might have an infection. Brown discharge is usually old blood your vagina is getting rid of after your period. If you haven’t had your period yet, you might want to check in with your doc, just to be safe.

What does it smell like?

Discharge has a slight odor, but there isn’t one “right” smell. Every girl is different. If it’s particularly strong, though, or you experience burning or itching, you should see your doctor.

Can I wear a pantiliner?

Sure, if it makes you feel more comfortable. The dampness, however, can irritate your skin, especially in summer months. We recommend wearing 100-percent cotton panties and loose clothes that allow your skin to breathe.

How should I keep clean down there?

A splash of lukewarm water when you’re bathing will do the trick. Do not use feminine washes—they disrupt the natural pH that your vagina maintains.

Is it normal for my dicharge to be al different textures?

Hey girly, it's totally normal for discharge texture to vary. What you want to watch out for is if it becomes lumpy or a cottage cheese texture. If that happens, you'll want to talk to a doctor.

Hey girlie,

It's impossible to guarantee exactly when you'll get your period (even a doctor can't do it!), but yes discharge is a sign that you're going through puberty normally and that your period is coming soon. We wish we could tell you exactly when, but just be confident that you're normal and healthy! Your bod will make your period come when it's ready Smile

Mod Mod Mod!!! wht is spotting?

Hey girl,

Spotting typically refers to a small amount of blood loss during early stages of pregnancy -- if you're asking in terms of your period, the term isn't being used correctly but could mean a light period.

I have white discharge about once a month and sometimes once a week.I feel wet "down there"and I went to go check what it was.It was white discharge and it looks odd. Also,I think I might have been spotting, but I'm not sure.I just started puberty and have breast development,in between stage 1 and 2.Could I be on my way to my period and about the discharge-is it normal to just have tons of discharge in your underwear in the beginning of puberty?

Hey chica!

It's very possible that you could be ready to get your period. But I'm not health expert, so maybe you should tell your mom and ask to go to a doctor just in case!

Hey girl,

Yellow is usually fine, but if it's a dark yellow and comes with a fishy/foul odor and/or an itch (both of which aren't "normal" to your bod), it's worth asking your doc to make sure things are ok.

Hey girl,

It's a little tough to get used to the idea but, once it start happening and you realize you have to deal with it, it becomes a lot easier. Remember that it's your blood and it's not coming out because you're injured (like it does any other time you probably see blood) - it's a natural part of being a girl, so it's nothing to get woozy over. You know what they say, "mind over matter." Just keep telling yourself you can deal with it and it's normal. You'll be fine, I know it Smile

MOD why do girls well yes im a girl dont worry, mature faster than guys

Hey girl, it's all hormonal so unfortunately there's no exact, clear cut answer why girls come first. Girls usually start puberty at 8-13; guys at 10-15. You could maybe say it's because more changes take place in a girls' bod: she develops breasts, grows taller and begins to have periods (so she can someday have children).

I can tell you the exact ways youll be effected. But if you keep stress levels down by relaxing as much as possible youll be fine. Also drink lots of water. That will help with the stress. xoxo kerra

karstinb123, Its so hard to tell when you will be getting our period. You could be spotting for a while and then have it come or you could have discharge and then have it stop and then you get your period.

About using tampons, it doesnt hurt if you use the right size for your size down there and you put them in slowly. So find the right size, dont get super size if you are kind of small and only try them when you are on your period because that is when you are lubricated down there. I use KY jelly or Astroglide to help them slide in, so that can help ease the uncomfortable feeling. Plus you need to get at the right angle so they slip in the right way. I practiced with my fingers before I started actually using tampons.

Hey, so I was wondering when will I get my period? I have all the signs- sore breasts, CRAZY mood swings, fatigue, cravings, lots of discharge, and sometimes cramps. I've been getting dicharge for a really long time, like 9 or 10 months, and I have had pubic hair down there for way longer. But I just started to get mood swings, and the occasional cramp. My mom even noticed how my mood changes so quickly- from mad to sad to happy to just plain down. She pulled me aside and asked me if I had pads in my back pack, "just in case" although my breasts are not very large, they probably started to grow sometime last year. Thanks for the help!

Hey girl!

Unfortunately, you can never be sure of when you are going to get your first period Usually it happens 1-2 years after you start puberty, so it could be soon, or it might not be for a while. Everyone is different.

So, I thought maybe I was just going to get my period or something idk. But anyway, the ther issue is, the discharge is sort of yellow. Is that normal? Do I have an infection? I talked to my pediatrician and she was just like "oh it's normal you're fine" but like she didn't even look at it or ask questions or anything. Do you think I'm gonna get my period? Is it an infection? Please give a legit answer Smile haha thanks

Hey girl, I think it depends on the smell here. Does it smell cheesy or really off? Then it might be an infection. Does it smell like your discharge has for the most part? Then it's fine; don't worry. Be prepared with pads and know your period will probably come soon!

MOD MOD MOD
1) How long will this discharge last!?!?
2) I realy want a bunny but my mom and dad does not like the Idea of frying more animals I have a cat and two big dogs that live with us. They don't like the idea cause we bought a Cocker ( my mom didn't study on the breed) and he has to live with my grandma cause he is to hyper. Well I'm allergic to my cat and my big dogs are to big to cuddle and I think a bunny would fit what I want how do I convince my rents to let me have a bunny? and what is a good breed I kinda want a small one. Oh and also where is a good place to buy them? ( I heard pets mart and pet co nimbus have undiagnosed medical problems) should I study up and make a poster of pros and cons?

hey girl,

1) it depends on your body, but don't worry too much about it.  Discharge is normal, and it shows your body is functioning correctly! 2) Bunnies can also be a lot of work, so talk to your parents.  They may not be ready for the extra work, so do a lot Internet research on how much work it would take to take care of a bunny.  It may be helpful to present them with a list of pros and cons (so they can make a logical decision)!

Discharge is one of the things most of us have to get used to. When we are younger it doesnt happen as much but because of hormones, periods and the sexual arousal thing it happens more and more. Some of my friends have been concerned about how much discharge they get. And it bothers me that it can happen at certain times that could be embarrassing. The good thing is that almost all of time the only people who knows we are having discharge is us.

MOD MOD MOD I have some really important questions to ask you ( may not be important to you) 1. How do I know when my period is ending 2. why is my period so late its almost the end of the month and i just now got it 3. Is Always ultra thin pad good to go to sleep with THANKS SO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey girly! As for your period,  you'll know when your flow slows down...as in, you stop bleeding as much. Periods are irregular for lots of girls, so I wouldn't worry about that too much! And, I usually sleep with overnight pads, just to make sure you don't leak anywhere!

Moderator!
Discharge dries yellow, right? I see yellow stuff in my undies & it looks dry. I'm not saying that my discharge is yellow (when I wipe, its white) I'm just asking if it DRIES yellow.

Hey girlie -- on off white or "yellow" color is fine, though you should check with your doctor to make sure Smile
