How to survive a best friend break up

Check these out, too...

  • Help! My BFF can't stand my BF
  • My friend sulks if I do better in school than her. Help!
  • 3 times it's OK to tell your bestie's secret
  • Girl Code: Is it OK to date your BFF's crush?
  • 8 BFF Reads: Characters' friendships you won't want to miss
It’s tough. You and your best friend had a huge fight and you think there’s no way to come back from it. This has happened to many of us, me included, but I’ve learned that although it may be a long winding road, you can come out of a situation like this feeling better than ever.

Step 1: Clear the negative energy
The number-one thing you need to do after a BBF break-up is to take some time to calm down. Only when you’ve gained some clarity can you truly begin to move on. Go for a walk or a jog, pick up a novel or belt out your fave tunes. Do whatever you need to get some breathing room.

Step 2: Assess the situation
Now that you’re calm and ready to focus, look back at the fight and how it all played out. Was this a spat that your friendship could bounce back from, or did somebody cross a line? If whatever happened now cause you to look at your friend in a different light, you really need to think hard before making any decisions.

Step 3: Making choices
Sometimes we want to keep bad friends in our lives because they’re been there forever and it’s all we really know. You need to decide if this is a person that you want to keep in your circle. Try making a pros and cons list of how your BFF has treated you for the entire time you’ve known her. Once you’ve considered every happy and horrid thing in your relationship closet, it’s time to ask yourself if you want to patch things up. Remember, this isn’t a choice between being besties or breaking up. You can downgrade her from numero uno confidant to just a friend.

Step 3: Cutting ties
If you’ve decided it’s time to say ta-ta, understand, first, that there’s no turning back. Ready? Okay, girlie, here’s what you need to do: Distance yourself. Don’t initiate convos, don’t invite her to hang out. If she wants to chat, be civil, but don’t go blabbing all yours secrets like everything is back to normal.

Step 4: Dealing with confrontation
Sometimes, friends mutually split up by simply going off in their separate ways. Other times, one friend fights to regain the relationship. If your ex-BFF wants to know why you’ve been distant, be calm and lay out the sitch. Explain that you think it’s best if the two of you hang out with other people, that your relationship has changed and you’re ready to move on. If she gets upset, choose to walk away. Don’t start hollering in the halls, okay hunnie?

What’s your next move?
Your next move is to clear the air between any of your mutual friends. Let them know the current state of things between you and the ex-BFF. Don’t be bitter about it or demand that your buddies pick sides. There’s no reason you have to find a whole new group just ‘cause you don’t along with one chica anymore.

One more thing…
Don’t think about it. Stick to your decision and focus on the elimination of unwanted drama when things get rough. Talk to other friends—those who aren’t besties with your ex—and your parents. Feeling lonely? Spend more time with other friends, and join new activities to meet fresh faces. Invite girls over for a sleepover or out shopping. And if you happen to cross paths with your former friend? Be cordial and act like a lady. She’ll take her cues from you.

MOD!
One of my friends hasn't been eating much lately, as I've noticed during lunch when all she eats is one of those school lunch cartons of milk. I told her that she should eat, but she says that she's not hungry. The wierd thing is that during classes, she says she's hungry! I don't know what to do and I don't want to assume she's anorexic when she is not. But, she could have mild anorexia! Help me, please!

Hey babe,

This is a serious issue whether you think it's "mild" or not - it's ok to be concerned, so you don't have to doubt yourself/make excuses! Check out these articles about the exact sitch for some tips on what to do:

MOD MOD MOD
So I thought I was really close with this girl but then my other friend said that she is always talking behind my back about how I look and spreading rumors. I know I'm going to go through a lot of friends in life but is there any way that I can tell if a girl is a true bestie or just pretending. Any advice?

Hey CottonCandyCutie, mhmm I wonder why that girl is talking about you behind your back? It can sometimes be hard to find out who are your real friends. I just recently went through two situations where I thought two people were my true buds, but it turns out they were only using me. In my case, time allowed me to find my real friends. Those friendships didn’t last really long, but the ones I have with my two best best friends have gone on for a while. So take your time and be careful when meeting new people. You’ll find some good pals. Hope this helps! Xoxo

So over spring break me and me best friend got in a huge fight... Because she is dating a guy who cussed my out and told me to go kill myself.. And I told her I didn't want her to date him because of this but one day I was sick and he asked her out. She said yes and I was so hurt that day.. So finally spring break comes and I just tell her the truth of how I feel that I feel that she choose this mean boy over a trust worthy friend and it seemed as if she didn't care on how I felt.. So I said to her you can choose him or me.. And she choose him.. I wasn't really hurt but kind of relived but now were back at school and it's weird because shes in all of my classes and we won't talk or look at each other.. I still really want to be her friend but I dont want to be her friend while she's dating him... Please help me I dont know what to do here

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!
My friends are really mean to me and others. One friend mainly is really mean and a hypocrit. The always screams at people and acts like the entire world revovles around her. If I get a good grade she will say it doesn't matter I don't care, but if she does good she rubs it in my face. She has been my friend for a while and my mom likes her a lot. She also took me to a Taylor Swift concert front row so I don't to seem like I'm using her. She is also mean to other people and not forgiving at all, unlike the rest of my friends. She also goes to my church at a different time and tells me all of the private things they say! What should I do?!

Hey girl,

If you want to stay friends with her, talk to her about her behavior and why it's hurting you. Tell her you like spending time with her and you're happy when she does well, but that you want her to be happy for you, too. She might not realize she's hurting your feelings, so talking to her about it openly (but kindly) will help both of you in the long run.
