We Tried It: Interval training

Need to boost your workout? We tried butt-kicking intervals—and landed some serious results.

After a cold winter filled with long, boring runs on the treadmill with no results, I decided it was time to switch it up. With a little research I stumbled upon my new savior: interval training. Yes, I am now that girl at the gym who is jogging for a minute, sprinting for a minute, and walking for thirty seconds. Although it looks a little hectic and unorganized to my fellow gym-goers, I have found that it is totally effective. The higher and lower intensities work my heart rate in a way that jogging never did, making the workout completely beneficial to my body (inside and out!).

Other benefits of interval training include: improving your speed and stamina, burning tons of calories, and best of all, it isn't boring. Sure, you're still stuck in the same spot on the treadmill for the same amount of time, but switching up the speeds makes it a million times more interesting, and with the warm weather here, it's also a great outdoor workout! I invested in a pocket-sized stopwatch to time my jog, sprint, and walk times while I’m outside. If you're into sports like soccer or lacrosse, which involve intense spurts of sprinting followed by more leisurely jogs and walks, interval training is for you. If you're into more calming activities such as going on walks, or practicing yoga, you may be a bit overwhelmed at first. For me, intervals have lived up to the hype and are lots of fun!
