Girls are risking their lives for a golden glow


 
Summer is just around the corner and tons of girls are flocking to the tanning salons in order to flaunt a sun-kissed glow. Uh oh. The American Academy of Dermatology gave us the cold, hard facts about the indoor tanning, and the harmful affects it can really have on our health.
 
Basking in the glow of a tanning bed can satisfy the desire to have celeb-like, bronzed skin. But is it worth the consequences you may face? The scariest outcome of tanning beds is melanoma, or skin cancer. This type of cancer is extremely deadly and something that we def. need to be aware of before setting foot in a salon. Other not-so-fun affects? Indoor tanning can lead to early aging and eye damage, and can even slow the immune system down! So while you may loooove the way your faux tan looks, will you love having wrinkles as a teen or dying before 30? The scariest part about the excessive indoor tanning is that a lot of people know the terrifying results it can have but chose their beauty over their health anyway.
 
The American Academy of Dermatology had this to say, “Our survey confirms that teens are more concerned with their current looks than their future health, even though they realize that skin cancer is a risk factor of their behavior”. Girls with fair skin are paying visits to the salons to try to make their skin darker and darker, even though fair skinned and freckled people are at a higher risk than people with darker skin. When your health is at risk, it’s time to think twice about what you’re doing. Girls of every shade are beautiful, so remember to put your body, your health and your life first.

Im a runner, who doesn't normally wear sunblock. I know the dangers, and I always worry about skin cancer, but I just always rush out, and remember once Im already running. Now im scared. I have a few stray freckles on my skin, and they're all about the same small size. The thing is that one is slightly raised. The skin wear it is is actually naturally kinda goosebumpy, but it's scaring me. It doesn't hurt, but Im still freaking out on whether it's skin cancer or not.Do you think it might be?




Hey girlie. I think that's a question for a doctor. They know more about skin cancer, so def get it checked out!

MOD MOD MOD! I think it is ridiculous to risk your life for darker skin. Do you know of any tanning lotions to use at the pool so I can get my tan the safer way? Thanks

 

Hey girl. You can check out Maui Babe, Lavera Natural Self-Tanner, or Topix Derma Safe Tan for tanning products but don't forget that you need to use sunscreen along with the lotion. Tanning lotions tend to have very low SPF levels so don't plan to use them instead of sunscreen.

I don't always wear sunscreen so some parts of my body are tan like from my elbow down and from my knee down. Now that it's summer I'm wearing shorter shorts and sleeves so it looks uneven. What can I do to make it look even and natural? Lauren C.

Me and my sister dont really get along, but I'm really worried about her. She goes to the tanning bed about 4 times a week (or more). I know what this can lead to, but if I tell her how dangerous it is then she'll just roll her eyes and ignore me. She's not gonna listen! But I'm scared for her health, what should I do?

This scares me because I know this girl in my homeroom who goes to a tanning salon twice a week. at first, she just looked like she had a natural tan but over tan , it kept more "orange". And now she looks peach like. People keep commenting on her skin and she gets aggravated by it but it's hard to notice. She's a great person and all, but not only do I think a natural tan is more beautiful , I'm also scared for her that she might get skin cancer.

If fake tans are really that dangerous its definitely not worth it!! I tan really easily so I wouldn't know, but a lot of my friends have pale skin and they really wanna look tanned. Thats just not worth it though! and pale skin looks so pretty Smile

spray tans r gross they always look fake and they paint ur skin so if u get those at least get organic 1s its not as bad 4 ur skin tanning beds arent rly bad if u use them not often and just going outside 2 get tan isnt bad cause u get ur vitamin d from the sun

My cousin and I are both on dance team, and she tans for it so she looks good in her uniform. She has this big random white spot on the back of her leg from tanning so much. Trust me, it's not a good look!

Girls should def not get tans like this!!! The better alternative is using the self-tanning lotions and sprays. Less harmful,just as effective(I know from experience-I have pretty fair skin!).

I got a bad sunburn at a volley ball game (I was wearing sunscreen I borrowed from a friend). Since I was wearing a v-neck t-shirt...it's a farmers tan...

I'm about as pale as they come and I think my skin is beautiful. I would never do anything this extreme for beauty. Mainly because my father recently passed away due to skin cancer. These girls need to stop torturing their skin.

I think its pointless to get a fake tan... especially if its like self tan. One girl in my grade wears it and you can tell so obviously that its fake because it gets smudged and it gets in her hair... but maybe thats just sloppy application

I use a gradual lotion tanner. I've been using it for less than a week and I can already see results. plus it looks natural. Its also a lot safer.

i don't fake tan or do real tan. occasionally i'll use something like jergens natural glow, but it don't tan in the sun! some of my friends are obsessed about tanning, and i keep trying to tell them that you can get cancer! :/

I get teased about having reddish skin. I'm a red-head, so my natural skin is pale. It doesn't tan, and only a few minutes in the sun turns it red. I got sunburn sitting in the sun at lunch for 39 minutes . .. in the dead of winter. I gave up on trying to cover it with foundation. In Spain, redheads are so uncommon, that a man once got off his motorcycle to kiss one before driving away. We win. Smile

I got this Jergens natural glow moisturizer that is kinda like a fake tan that you apply and over time it should make it look like a tan. Is this safe? And can i put it on my face because it doesnt say on the bottle... Thx!

 

Hey chica! Yes, this is totally safe! I think they make ones specifically for your face but if it doesn't specify it should be fine.
