Reach out and read! YA lit tackles mental health probs

Check these out, too...

  • 8 great things that happened this week
  • Could you deal with an all-veg cafeteria menu?
  • Merida's makeover: Big deal or not so much?
  • YOLO or "Oh, no"? When taking a risk is the right thing to do
  • 7 ridiculous caffeine-laced products (and why they just might disappear)
May is Mental Health Awareness month, which means it's the prime time to check out the ReachOut Reads program.

Whether you are affected personally by one of these disorders or are simply interested in learning more about them, ReachOut Reads is a great resource to get informed and connect with other teens. The program seeks not only to offer a feeling of comfort and a newfound ability to cope with these issues through literary outlets, but also to raise awareness about mental health issues and how to manage them.

The list of books suggested by ReachOut has been vetted by the Young Adult Library Services Association, and includes topics such as abuse, depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-harm and schizophrenia.

Wanna speak your mind? The website also offers blogs and a share your story feature that allow teens to talk about their own experiences.

Check out reachout.com for more information and a complete booklist.

MOD MOD MOD MOD (I dont know WHY im posting this on a site for like....12 year olds, but i figured id girve it a shot)
I was abused alot and neglected. I have PTSD and I dont know what to do about it. I'm scared to death about getting being the wheel, because i always feel spacey and like things arent real. WHAT THE HECK DO I DO.

Hey there,

No worries - if you have questions or need someone to talk to, we're here no matter what your age. I think the best thing to do in this situation is to talk to someone who is experienced in this kind of stress. Sure you can try to deal with it yourself, but keeping a journal and talking to someone (a counselor, a psychologist, even a trusted family member) can really help you work through your fears, emotions, and anxieties so you can overcome them. The absolute worst thing would be to keep them inside and let them ruin your life. You still have a chance to live intensely, for real, and not have the world around you feel "spacey" or foggy. And you deserve to have the best life possible, so I really hope you consider talking to someone about it soon <3

MOD MOD MOD MOD I think I have depression. A lot of my family members do and I have been researching it for a while now. I have looked up symptoms and I have been experiencing a lot of the symptoms such as sudden urge to sleep and eat and feeling of guilt when i have done nothing wrong. I also used to hurt myself and my mom has helped me through that. Are there tests or something to see if you have depression. I have been talking to my bff about it and she said if there is a test, she will do anything to make it so that she will go with me for support. Also, how do I talk to my mom about it? Please help!

Hey chica, I would make an appointment with the doctor, or a counselor in your area. Even your guidance counselor at school. They're equipped to handle tough things, like Depresison, and can get you on the track to feeling better. And, I'd be honest with your mom and let her know that you think you may need to talk to someone.

yeah ..2 of my close friends have self injury problems ..& i had an eating disorder ,sorta..
it's really nice to hear that some ppl give a damn 2 educate others about those tough stuff .. this can make any community stronger .. my friends & i had hard time w/ ppl being clueless about 'cutting' ..some ppl mix those problems w/ attention seeking ..

SO GL GIRLS ..DO U AGREE OR DISAGREE ??PLEASE VISIT MY PROFILE & LEAVE ME A COMMENT Smile
