What is Memorial Day, anyway?

You have the day off from school, but do you have any idea why? We've got all the deets on the national holiday that dedicates a day to those who sacrificed their lives in our nations service. Plus, what it's all about, what's happening today, and what you can do to honor our veterans.

What’s it all about?
Memorial Day is a national holiday that was created to honor those who died in our nation's service. It always falls on the last Monday of May, and often marks the beginning of the summer season.
Originally called "Decoration Day” upon its conception in 1868, the holiday was meant to mourn soldiers who had died in the Civil War. After World War I, it was extended so that citizens could honor any American soldier that died in combat, regardless of the war in which they fought.

What’s happening today?
A nation-wide moment dedicated to remembrance occurs at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. The U.S. flag is traditionally flown at half-staff from dawn until noon as well. An annual concert is also known to take place at the Capitol, and many towns and cities also host Memorial Day parades to honor locals who have served the U.S. Be on the lookout for marching bands, outdoor music festivals and special services at churches and cemeteries!

What should you do?
Take your pick! Tune in to watch the concert on T.V. or attend a local fete with family and friends. Many people choose this weekend to celebrate the coming of summer. Grills are fired up and pools are opened, so don’t forget your swimsuit. Wanna pay tribute to the brave individuals who fight for our rights? Lay flowers on graves at a local cemetery or gather your girl friends for a service day spent weeding, cleaning up gravestones and volunteering at veteran’s hospitals and shelters.

What do you plan on doing today? Share in the comments below.
