Scared to ask Mom about makeup

I want to wear makeup but I'm scared about what my parents would say. I always see other girls in school wearing mascara and eyeliner. I’m in 8th grade and I just want to wear mascara because I have short eyelashes. How should I bring it up?

Wearing makeup can be a fun part of growing up, but it can also make mom and dad feel like they’re losing their baby girl. Proving that you can handle it by following these steps will erase their hesitation and show how mature you’ve become.

Be considerate of their feelings
The last thing you want is for your parents to think you’re growing up too fast. Asking to wear make up will probably start a conversation about your maturity level, so be sure to act in a calm, sophisticated manner instead of whining and using the “everyone else is doing it!” excuse. Start the convo by telling them that you believe you’re mature enough to wear make up, and would just use it to enhance your already beautiful features. Giving full-blown examples of how you manage to walk the dog, take out the trash AND finish your math homework might be a good start.

Have Mom give you a lesson
If you get mom involved from the get-go, she’ll feel like she’s a part of the process and has some control over your make up usage. Take a mother-daughter outing to the nearest department store and have someone from the makeup counter help you find the perfect mascara. Not only will this keep your mom involved, but it will also be a great bonding experience! Ask mom what she thinks about each pick—she’ll be thrilled to think you value her opinion.

Ditch the clown face!
Prove to your parents that you can in fact wear make up without looking like you belong in a circus by only applying a little at a time. Be sure not to over-do the mascara and just use it at appropriate times, like a school dance. Showing your parents how you can use it in moderation will definitely impress them, so keep it to a minimum and don’t make them regret their decision!

Good luck, girlie!

---MOD MOD MOD---
My mom lets me wear mascara, but im really freaked out to ask her for concealer because I have some pimples I'm really embarrassed of. She doesn't wear any make up other than coverup. I've tried to bring it up but she just shushes me and I haven't had the nerves to ask her.

Hey girlie, just go for it. If that's all that she wears, I'm sure she'll be agreeable to letting you use it too. It won't look like you're wearing makeup so I'm sure it's not something that she'll be upset about you asking.

I am in 7th grade and I wear mascara and lip gloss. everyone else wears eye shadow, even girls who aren't allowed to wear mascara. I asked my mom a couple times if i could wear it and she won't let me. I really want to , but i don't know what i could do. she says i cant wear it until im 16 Frown plz help!

Hey girl,

If your mom says no, there's not a lot you can do. Accept what she says and show her your maturity by not overreacting, and act calmly and listen to her side next time you bring it up. She'll be more likely to say yes if you show her you're mature!

MOD MOD MOD ok so here's the thing I try do my best but all I get is yelled at! Like sometimes if I squint my mom thinks I'm rolling my eyes or because I have attendantcy to hold my mouth open then she thinks I'm muttering something under my breath and when I say I didnt I get yelled at or hit because they call it"talking back"I need help my mom and my stepdad also talk about spanking me on a daily basis until my math grades are better and I " sharpin up" and " pay attention" AS IF THAT WILL HELP!! I also hear lectures on growing up and being responsible 24/7. What do I do? Please don't say just talk to them because I've tried that and it never works I don't want to live with my dad or grandma. HELP! Frown, Nirvana fan Nirvana Fan

Hey girl. Why not talk to a trust adult about this other than your rents. You could also try to be more concious of how your face looks when you aren't thinking. Like when they start talking to you conciously close your mouth and keep you eyes open. Nod to show them you are listening. Talk to your teach about the math thing and start staying after class for math help so that they will be able to see that you are trying.

Mod Mod Mod I'm going into high school and I want to start wearing mascara and eye shadow. I have natural medium brown hair (not light brown and not dark brown) with no highlights or anything like that. I have brown eyes, short eyelashes, and kinda pale skin. I'm a tom boy, but don't mind being girly every now and then. What color eye shadow would you recommend for me and should I get black or clear mascara? Thank you ;)

Hey girl. A lot of brands have lines specifically to bring out certain eyes colors like this one: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P291426&om_mmc=aff-linkshare-null-fQsixD_Xeow&_requestid=24757. I think either black or clear will work. You could also try navy mascara, which I've heard can make brown eyes pop. I've seen tons of different colors work for girls with brown eyes, so your choices are unlimited for eyeshadow. I usually hear blue or greens though.

Mod!Mod!Mod!
I'm a preteen and looking to start a modeling career. My friend is a model and got me interested in it. My parents aren't supportive of it because they think I'm not serious and that we don't have enough money and time to start one. What should I do to convince my parents and start a career?

Hey girl,

The best thing to do is get a lot of information from your friend about how she got started, what jobs she's been doing, how much of a time commitment it is, how much money she/her family has had to spend on the career, etc. Gather all of those details together and present them to your parents so they know exactly what you're looking at. They still might not be in a position to help you out right now (because really, money and time are at a shortage for lots of fams right now), but at least you'll know you've done all you could to fill them in!

MOD MOD , i only live with my dad and i really want to wear make up ,my friend jazmine always wears makeup and her parents are fine with it she can wear nail polish any thing but i cant even wear nail polish or my dad will get super mad, so when i was at her house i tryed makeup on and i actually felt pretty i dont know it made me feel older, but my dad wont let me not even nail polish . All my friends wear some sort of make up and i dont , what should i do or how can i talk to him. i dont want to be a little kid anymore.

Hey babe! That's exactly what you need to tell him. Just be honest with him, say that you'll always be his little girl, but you need him to let you grow up a little. You're getting older now and you really want to try wearing nail polish (start small). Tell him that you won't go overboard, maybe just a light pink. You'd really like his approval. Also a good thing to do would be to ask your BFFs mom to help you put on makeup so that it looks super natural. Explain it to another woman that you want your dad to understand that makeup isn't a bad thing. I'm sure your dad is afraid of you growing up, and that you'll go way overboard if he gives you permission to try new things. Just reassure him that that won't happen. Good luck girlie! xoxo

Don't be scared to ask about makeup! It's just like asking for pads on your period, but if your scared about both, idk what to say! It's pretty easy to ask about makeup. It's just like asking for lip gloss or clothes! Just be sure to not use make-up as a mask! It's just for touch up! Check out my channel on youtube.com Type in the user name jollyrancher996, and go to beauty tips girl talk and two minute face. It talks about makeup, and how to apply a quick amount on without rushing or being messy with it. Check out all my other videos on youtube!

Well you just gotta break the ice with your mom. But since it is your first time wearing make-up, take it easy and go natural. I just got out of 6th grade and i wear oil control powder, loose blush, mascara, a little bit of eyeliner, and very subtle lip gloss. I was scared to tell my mom about this too but if you just say you want to enhance your features instead of covering them up I'm sure she will understand. Smile Good Luck!

I'm thirteen and I want to know how I can tell my mom I know what sex is. Every time we watch a movie or something she always covers my eyes when people are kissing or getting into bed with each other. When she does that, she's absolutely serious because she thinks everything is "too inappropriate." I can't even watch shows like "That 70's Show" without her getting on my back about it. I really want her to understand I'm not 2 anymore. Also, my parents are really shy I guess you can say. My mom never talked to me about getting my period and my parents never talked to me about sex. My sister is 24 now and she said they never talked to her about it either. I'm afraid that my parents will keep babying me forever. So how can I stop it now?

Sit them down and explain to them that you are familiar with sex (not through experience, but through talking) and that you would like to be able to talk to them about any questions you may have

Hey girl,

Have your mom give you ideas about how she puts on make-up, but remind her that people of different ages tend to wear make-up differently, so tell her that while you do appreciate her advice, you're gonna try to experiment a little on your own. Good luck! x0x0

I really want to wear thongs. I'm 13 about to turn 14. I've thought about it, too.I dont mind comfort, and since I wear skinny jeans most everyday (You can see my panties from under my jeans no matter what jeans I wear) and take dance at school (I have to wear jazz pants which fit REALLY tight on the butt and some girls make fun of me for not wearing a thong DSmile. The thing is, my mom has talked to me about how uncomfortable they are before. I've worn them once for a dance competition because it was my first and I was wary about not wearing undergarments, and it was actually comfy for me. How do I bring this up with ehr without it being REAALLLYYY awkward? I'm pretty close with my mom so I want o be able to tell her stuff like this but I don't know how!! (Wow that was really long!! HaHa sorry!!)
XoXo, Arden!!

Hey girl! Maybe just ask her if you guys can go on a shopping trip. Tell her you need some new things, especially underwear. I'd casually say I wanted to get a few thongs for my dance competitions so I don't have visible panty lines! See what she says. If she objects, maturely explain your reasoning and hope for the best!

MOD MOD MOD Well awhile back I used to dress goth/emo/punk and my mom complained, so I stopped, even though I loved the look and even though I was made fun of. A couple days ago, I hurt myself, and my mom caught me, and when we were talking about it she said just be yourself so I said "I was myself, when I wore the black I liked it, and you complained." and she said "Well look where it got you" as she pointed to my wrists. The thing is, the way I dressed didnt have anything to do with what I did to myself, if anything it stopped me from doing this sooner. So she doesnt like that I say "I just wanna fit in", but yet she doesnt like how I express myself? Im stuck. How can I get her to understand?? Sorry that was really long.

Hey girly,
I think you need to talk to a counselor on this one. See if there is any way that you, a counselor, and your mom can sit down and work this all out. Hopefully you will be able to find a way that will make you happy and make you able to be yourself. Good Luck!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to wear some shade of grey eyeliner but I'm not sure about eyeshaddow or mascara. I think black mascara may be too much of a contrast, but brown wuldn't really go with the grey either? What do you think and what do you think about the eyeshadow? I want it to be kind of natural/suddle but to still be able to tell that its there! Smile Thanks!

Hey girly,

Try a light blue or a brown eyeshadow. That will totally work with your eyes. The black mascara can be subtle as long as you don't put too much on. Also, there is a brown or blue eyeliner that you can try.
Good luck!

Hey babe, this contest so does not sound healthy. As a growing girl you should really talk to a doc before starting any weight loss plan. Stay active and tell your parents or guidance couselour about this contest.

My class actually grows up really fast. I started shaving my legs in 5th grade, not even needing to. I started wearing makeup in the summer of sixth grade. jennal923, I actually disagree with you alot haha...Just because I wear makeup doesn't mean I'm unhappy with myself, I'm just giving myself a self confidence boost. I think I'm at good medium, I wear mascara and sometimes eyeliner to school (I have small eyes, it helps.) and some concealer if I have any pimples that need covering. Some girls wear blue mascara and foundation and eyeshadow and all that stuff to school, and everyone thinks shes fake. So I say if you keep it controlled, makeup can be a great thing. Smile

when I wanted to wear makeup, I made my mom a really cute card and on the inside I wrote her a note asking if I could wear makeup. She liked the card so much she taped it closed and showed evryone! She talked to my dad about it and they said I could wear mascara, a little colored lipgloss or eyeshadow, and concealer. I usually just wear mascara and concealer though because I have short thin lashes and mild acne. Sometimes when I go out I wear some Sally Hansen spray foundation, which is absolutely AMAZING!
Oh and I did the same thing when I asked my mom if I could shave my legs. It works really well! (:

Why would you want to wear make up? Just because you see other girls wearing make up, you shouldn't feel left out and think that wearing make up is mandatory in growing up or something..
Girl, I bet you are beautiful inside and outtt, even with those short eyelashes. Just don't completely cake yourself in make up and make "a whole new you." Cause then no one can see your real beauty.

Hey girl! Sunburns are the worst. You were right to try aloe (I like putting it in the fridge). This article should help you: http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/06/13/BEAUTY-101-Top-3-Tanning-Disasterse280a6and-How-to-Fix-e28099em.aspx

ModModMod HeySmile This might sound mean, but I kinda want a new best friend. My best friend seems like she's a bad influence on me, my parents even think that. But, when I tried that, I had barely anyone else to hang with. I have alot of friends, but they aernt as close to me, so it would be okward to hang with only them. Any help or thoughts?? Thank you sooo much!!!!

Hey girl. Sometimes we outgrown our friendships. It happens to all of us. If your girl really is a bad influence you should try to limit hanging out with her to in school (no need to start a fight). As far as getting closer to other friends, why would it be awkward? Try asking them over to watch movies or bond over something you have in common. Want new friends? Why not try a new activity? Always wanted to learn to dance, horseback ride, or draw? Sign up for a class. You're bound to find awesome chicks while doing something you love.
