Wanna start your own big-bucks business? In our June/July 2011 issue, we chatted up seven tween and teen biz-whizzes to get the scoop on their success. We’re sharing their best bits of advice to help you start it up!

Gauge interest
Katie Allred and Macy Dunegan of Midlothian, Texas, were track stars looking to make a little dough while they hung out all summer long. They combined their talent with a love for pooches (Katie’s mom is a dog trainer) and bingo! Hello, business. After chatting it up to Mrs. Allred’s clients, they knew they had a winning idea. People were pulling out their wallets before they’d even settled on a business plan!
Lesson learned? Before you launch a business, ask around to see if people would pay money for whatever it is you’re offering, whether it’s a service or a product.

Pick a passion

As soon as 16-year-old Shea Gouldd of Boynton Beach, Fl., could see over the counter, she was helping her mom cook dinner. At 13, she (with a little help from the Food Network) taught herself how to bake. Now that she is selling her goodies, she loves that her hobby makes people so happy. Seeing the smiles on her customers’ faces—and knowing they’re counting on her to deliver—helps her push through the difficult days.
Lesson learned? If you don’t like it now, you’ll hate it once you’re forced to follow through with a product or service. You can’t just decide you don’t want to work one day because that’s not how a business works.

What have you got to lose?
It wasn’t artist Maggie Lemak’s idea to sell her paintings at an art fair. It was her parents who pushed her to give it a shot. The 15-year-old received positive feedback at her first fair last year and now receives custom orders. And—oh yeah—she sold one of her pieces to dot.mine, a stationary company that will be using her design on the cover of a student planner this fall.
Lesson learned? If you’re doing something potentially profitable for fun, there’s no harm in seeing if you can’t make a buck—or twenty or thirty—off of your hobby.

Know when to go pro
Paige Sorrell, 14, was bored when she went into her mom’s leather-crafting studio looking for something to do. She began braiding strips of leather into bracelets, and the rest is history. After months of experimenting with designs and techniques, she knew that her bracelets were well made and consistent enough to go pro. She’s been selling them ever since.

Lesson learned? When you realize you can make moolah from something you’ve created, it’s natural to be excited. But don’t jump the gun. You need to hone your technique so that your final product is polished. If it’s good enough to be sold in a store, chances are you’re ready to start up your biz.

Find a need
When Lily Sandler, 13, and her sister Melanie, 12, started lip balm company Blamtastic, they did so because they weren’t happy with the chemical-laden lip products that were on the market. They wanted something all natural, and when they couldn’t find it in stores, they decided to make it themselves. And guess what? They’ve sold over 200,000 tubes so far!
Lesson learned? It’s all about changing the world for the better and being original while you do it. If you wish you could find something in stores but can’t, see what it would take to make it, market it and sell it yourself. Who knows: You might be the next Fortune 500 CEO!

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD
I am looking for a few babysitting jobs this summer in my area, so I decided to make some flyers and pass them out. I am really good at making flyers, so I am planning on making them creative and informative. I am also in the process of finishing a resume and I already have 2 reference letters. Me and my friend agreed to meet tomorrow and start passing them out. There's this really popular playground beside my school and a lot of parents go there with their kids so we're probably passing it out there. And beside it is a path, where parents walk and bike with their kids. We're just going to pass them out to the parents and maybe give them to kids to give to their parents (we were also thinking of buying lolly pops or little toys for the kids to pass out). Do you think this is a good idea? Will I get some customers? By the way, I am only putting my email on the flyer and I am giving them a resume and 1 reference letter.

Hey girl! I think this is a fabulous idea! It's amazing to hear that you're so determined! I love that your BFF is helping too! I think the parents will be super impressed that you took the time to make those things up. It shows them that you're responsible and intelligent, just the kind of person they want to look after their children. And handing them out in person is great because you're making your first impression and it's a good one! There's no guarantee that you'll get call backs, but I think you can be pretty confident. This is a great idea! Good luck!!!

MOD MOD MOD!!
this summer i really need to make some MAJOR money. i plan on spending it on a nice camera, the kind that are like 500 or 600 dollars. i have absolutly no idea how to get that much money though. i do already have someone i babysit for, but there just aren't that many people we know with little kids that would need babysitting. also, i am really artsy so i would like to sell my art, but my mom wont let me sell anything on **** because she doesnt think its a 'secure website'. im already going to be selling crafts ive made at a garage sale were having too. so, based on that, could you give me absolutly any ideas for how to make a lot of money? btw, im only ** so theres no way ill be able to get a 'real' job. please give me absolutly any ideas to help. ill most likley try all of them, thank you so so so much!

Hey girl! It's so great that you're determined to earn money to buy your own camera. That's really cool. I would first recommend going to your local community center and putting up posters informing anyone that you're a babysitter. Just because you don't know many people doesn't mean you can't get your name out there somehow. Maybe someone will see it or show a friend of theirs. You can reassure you're mother that it is a secure website! And that's a wonderful idea to get your artwork out there. That's an amazing idea. If your mom still doesn't go for it you can go around to different stores and see if they will sell your work. There are some kids who have been selling their own jewelry since they were 12. It's really impressive, and it's a great thing to put on a resume someday, not that you need to worry about that now. If you live in a smaller town you can try going to little family owned restaurants and cafes, they may be willing to hire you. You can also check at the community center and see if there are any postings about job openings. Good luck babe!
