The FDA's got some thoughts on your SPF 100

Don’t bother buying that SPF 100 sunscreen this year. According to the Health Blog on the Wall Street Journal’s site, the FDA has claimed that there is not enough proof that it works any better than an SPF 50 (ppst: so that’s what you should buy!). You should also know that if the sunscreen doesn’t say “Broad Spectrum SPF” it’s also not worth your cash.
Here’s the main point: “Broad Spectrum SPF” just means that is protects your skin from both UVB and UVA rays. The FDA is testing every sunscreen to see if they are worthy of this label.
The FDA is also saying that all those sunscreens that are labeled as “water-proof,” “sweat-proof,” or called “sun block” are exaggerating their effectiveness. The word “resistant” will be used instead of “proof.” That means we’re going to be reapplying extra often, to ensure our skin stays protected all day.
