I don't want to go on a diet!

I’m really insecure about my body. I weight 164 pounds and I am 12 years old. My parents want me to go on a diet, and while I want to be healthy, I really don’t like the idea of restricting what I eat. I also have to exercise for an hour a day, which I find really difficult. What should I do?

I’m sorry you’re having such a difficult time of it, babe. One of the most important things for us to do throughout our lives is to keep ourselves healthy—physically, mentally and emotionally. You shouldn’t have to restrict yourself to live a healthy lifestyle, but it may mean changing up your daily routine a bit. We’ve got some ideas that might make it easier for ya…

Fuel your bod

I hate the word “diet” because it brings to mind crazy crash eating plans that really aren’t good for you at all. What you should be doing, no matter what you weigh, is looking at how you eat and making sure that you’re getting the nutrients that you need every single day. Are you getting enough vitamins a minerals? Are you eating enough produce? Are you packing in the protein to keep your energy up? Are you eating good carbs or lots of fats and sugars?

Don’t cut out your favorite things

Remember: A balanced diet isn’t about stuffing your face full of green beans 24/7. You’re allowed to have treats. Just make sure that your indulgences aren’t overwhelming (a cereal bowl full of ice cream after every meal instead of a scoop or two every so often) and you’re not using them to replace a healthy meal. Cutting out your favorite things will only make you crave them until you can’t resist them anymore…and then you’ll binge. Rewarding yourself with small treats is A-OK.

Find something fun to do

Wanna know a secret? I can’t stand the idea of “working out.” It just makes me not want to do it even more. But when you break that big idea down into things you actually like to do, like biking to your BFF’s house or playing badminton, exercising is fun. All you need to do is to find a way to get that healthy workout in without making it seem like a chore. If you loathe the treadmill, go power walk around your neighborhood, instead. Running makes you feel like you’re gonna keel over? Try rollerblading instead. You can swim, you can play dodgeball, you can go rock climbing, you can jump rope, you can ice skate, you can learn to surf. Whatever it is that tickles your fancy and gets ya moving, do it!

Good luck, lovely!

Me and my mom have the same BMI and it makes me feel really insecure about myself. Is there any healthy ways i can lose weight?

Hey girlie,

You can't compare yourself to anyone else - that includes mom, friends, models/actresses, whatever. Your body is yours and is totally unique, so it's gonna behave in its own ways. What you can do, though, is ask your doc help you figure out what a healthy weight/BMI would be for your height and body type. Then, make sure you eat healthy, well-balanced meals (and cut your portion size down a little from what you're used to - everything in moderation!), plus get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. This can be biking, playing soccer/basketball/kickball with your friends, jogging with your dog, or even a brisk walk with mom after dinner. Make it fun so you don't get discouraged!

I'm 12, 4 9" and I way an entire 91 pounds! My doctor says i'm fine, but I'm embarrased to wear tight fitting clothes and bathing suits. How can I loose weight? I don't eat junk food and I eat small portion sizes and I often don't eat lunch or breakfast, but I don't loose weight! I want to be down to 70 pounds by the end of this school year. How can I achieve that goal?

Hey girly, in my opinion, 91 pounds sounds really small already! I'd trust your doctor on this. Anything less would be unhealthy and underweight. And, being underweight can affect other areas of your appearance as well. It can make both your skin and your hair appear dull. Not to mention, that it's not healthy!

i am 12 and 138 pounds and i want to loose weight but i cant help

Hey girl, it's so important if you need to lose weight you talk to your doc about it and hear it from him. He'll plan out a fitness and diet program with you to lose it safely. Do not crash diet; do not starve yourself: those methods are dangerous and don't work.

Okay. So, I'm very sensitive about my body even though i was at a water park and this guy (prob about 18) walked past me and said something. It was a compliment in a ghetto sort of way. But anyways, I'm 13 and I weigh about ... lbs with clothes, but I am 5'7"-8". All of my friends tell me I'm perfect but I don't believe them. Is this bad, am I overweight?

Hey girl,

No one can tell you that you're "overweight" except for your doctor. If you're really concerned, ask at your next check up for a professional opinion. But the most important thing is that you're getting moderate exercise each day and pairing that with a healthy, well-balanced diet!!
