6 ways to make a difference in your spare time

 
 
Have a free afternoon? Use your downtime to make a difference in your community. We’re showing you who to call and what do to make the most of a summer off. Talk about a season of giving!

 

Volunteer at your local animal shelter. The animals are oh-so cute plus you’re really making a difference!

 

Phone up a nearby hospital or clinic and ask if they need any volunteers.

 

Donate old clothes to Good Will or the Salvation Army. Someone less fortunate will totally appreciate your gesture.

 

Serve lunch or dinner at a Soup Kitchen with your sweeties.

 

Help out neighborhood families by babysitting. You could have a lot of fun hanging out with the kids, and you'd be giving the parents a much-needed break from the madness.

 

See if you can assist with the Sunday school program at your church.

 

Help brighten up the lives of the elderly at a nursing home. To see your smiling face might really make their day. You can sing, dance, play games, read stories, bring in pets, just about anything you want.

I've been volunteering at my local humane society ever since the fisrt week of Febuary! It is so fun. Sometimes I work in the puppy/kitten room or in the volunteer room. Smile

my local animal shelter wont let anyone under the age of 18 work with the animals bcuz of insurance restrictions Frown instead they were like host a fundraiser... this summer is soooo boring cuz im 2 young 2 volunteer anywhere or get a job but im too old to go to summer camps Frown

Do you think it would be a good idea to start a babysitting group in my neighbourhood? I'd like to babysit a couple of kids for 5-6 hours on Saturdays/Sundays and I am thinking of charging $20 per kid. Do you think this is a good idea? How do I start advertising my services??




Hey girl,

Yes I think that's a great idea! You can start advertising by having your parents tell their friends what you want to do, because by word-of-mouth the news will spread really quickly. Also, you could make fliers and put them up at community centers, office buildings, and grocery stores in your area--just any where a lot of moms would go.  Good luck!

I am already involved in a youth leadership program (you basically help out with day camps and look after the kids and you go on trips and volunteer. It`s pretty fun!!
This article is motivating me to volunteer at animal shelters, because I am a total animal lover and I want to volunteer at hospitals and clinics! Great ideas, you guys should write more articles like this Smile

i have medium brown hair, medium brown eyes, and skin that isnt tan, but not pale either. just normal. what color clothes would look good for me?




Hey girlie,

You're lucky because you can pull off the biggest variety of colors because your hair/eyes are neutral! Since it's summertime, go for pretty banana yellows, celery green, and creamsicle orange. In the fall and winter though, gem tones will totally be your friend (emerald, sapphire, deep purples). You can also probably pull of bright red with ease!

So I went to a party where all of my soccer team mates were at. (my coach trows a party and the end of evry season)It was a pool party so I was swimming under water and couldn't see. I accidently hit one of my teammates while i was swimming. I apologized to her but she ignored it. Then she told everyone on my team that i purposly untied her bikini top and grabbed her boob. Now no one talks to me and they all think Im a lesbo. What should I do? I try not to care what people think of me but my whole team of 17 girls is a little toop much to ignore! PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

theres a lot of girls that think my olderbrothers "hot" and it bugs me even my friend do. and my friend was all like "omg ur brother is so hot and athletic and smart and amazing he is perfect in every way hotter than anyone" the other day and im like "o my gosh shut up PLZ" and it bugs me so much and its not just one person its a lot of my friends and some other people ugh its annoying when my FRIENDS call him "amazing" i mean arent they supposed to support my decision to h8 him???

They should respect you if you honestly tell them, seriously without laughing or anything, that you don't want to hear him being called hot or anything. But that doesn't mean they have to hate him too! He's older and, if he is attractive, it's natural for your friends to scope him out - and they might very well develop crushes on him. Try to roll with it and keep telling them that they can have all the feelings toward him they want, but you really don't wanna hear about it. True and loyal friends will get the message and stop focusing on it so much when you're around Smile

I have a big family with a lot of pets and a big house. my mom just started making us do chores, and theres huge things on it like vaccuum the whole house (we have a BIG house), make dinner, dust all the furniture, brush all our cats and dogs, and a lot more, not even including the reg. stuff like making our bed, etc. But my lil bro only has to do 3 things, and hes 10!! my parents baby him sooo much, I HATE IT! I only get $12 a week too!!! its really unfair. whenever I try to talk to my mom, she just says I'm a spoiled brat. HELP >Frown

Just try to do your chores well and without complaining at first. I know it seems like a lot of work but, if you commit to it and focus on it, it'll be done quickly! Then, once some time passes, try approaching mom and dad in a mature way. Tell them you've done your chores on time for a couple weeks now and you wanted to talk about how they've been divided between you and your brother. Tell them you don't expect them to give him big chores like vacuuming - and that you understand he's younger so he'll get fewer chores than you. But you also want it to be a bit more fair, like maybe giving him one little chore off your list! Be calm and let your parents know you're all about compromising - that way, it'll be more likely for them to help ya out Smile

Just talk about it ahead of time so your bestie knows what to expect! Ask her if she's a good swimmer, then tell her you're kinda worried because the other people in the lessons might be better than you are. That way, you've gotten your concerns off your chest - and now you can face the class with your BFF at your side to support you. But don't forget that lessons are for people to learn how to swim better! They won't all be pros Smile

I'm really starting to run out of free/cheap things to do. I just moved to NV from AZ. (major weather change!) And I haven't started school so I don't know anyone except my neighbors. Can you think of things I can do to be healthy and happy and active? I really don't want to lose my awesome figure and healthy metabolism . I'm hoping I can also keep up my grades. Everything being new is a struggle. I need a little advice!




Hey girl,

Try to get creative with your surroundings! Go somewhere, even if it's just a library or a new restaurant, that you've never been before. Grab some books and lose yourself in different worlds. Take up a hobby and find a cheap class to join based on that topic. (Or even a class at a local summer school?) Go to a public pool with a neighbor or a fam member - and, if you see people your own age, say hello! Take advantage of the fact you just moved here. Tell them you're new to town, introduce yourself, and ask them if they have any recommendations for fun stuff to do in the summer Smile It's tough to meet people when you don't have school classes to help ya out, but remember that you only have a couple months left to get through! Try to make the most of it!

hi thanks so much for your help!! i think that me putting the bubble thing just like pushed it down the drain cuz i tried flushing it a few times (once i put a bunch of toilet paper w/ it to see what would happen) and it is all fine now. thank you soo much for ur help because it would be extremely embaressing if my dad had to unplug it and then all of this bloody toilet paper came out... so THANK YOU Smile

ok im seriously bored. i have nothing to do during the week during the day. i cant go anywhere because my parents arent home. all i do anymore is sit on the computer. im not allowed to go outside either. my mom thinks if i go outside i'll get kidnapped and raped. pleeease give me something to do!!!! my only other option is like, reading or something. i love reading but i dont want to right now. Hey babe! It can be pretty boring being stuck inside all day with nothing to do. If you can invite some friends over that could keep you entertained. Or you can workout in the house, run up and down the stairs, do some sit-ups and push-ups and things. You can watch a movie... Maybe you can work your creative side and draw or paint or write. If you like reading you can can try your hand at writing! Keep a journal or start your own novel. Great things happen when you are truly bored Smile finding ways to entertain yourself really makes you appreciate your creativity. Good luck xoxo

the bubble thing is well u know how when you blow bubbles (just say when u babysit) and u know how there are bubble blower things that are really big? u know the wand that goes to that? i pushed that down the toilet and i guess that unplugged it. anyways, now there is some water, but not as much as the other toilets. i mean theres some, but ya. should i flush the toilet again to c what happens?




Oh ok! Well when you stuck that in there, did any toilet paper come up? Because if you flush the toilet now, the same thing will probably happen. When you stuck it in there it probably just pushed the clog out of the way... I would try to use the bubble wand to scoop out anything that may be stuck in there... If you can do that then you should be good, if nothing comes out then I guess you can try to flush again. If it still overflows then you know that something is still stuck in there and if it works, then good job!! Let me know!

hi! im the one with the overflowed toilet problem. now i couldnt find a plunger but i fount one of those long bubble things. (like where u blow bubbles in it but its really long) i put it down the toilet (like i was hanging onto it) and now all the water went away... should i flush the toilet now??? thank u SOOO much Smile
