Freaked about going to junior high

Check these out, too...

  • 5 last-minute ways to lift your grades
  • How can I turn my attitude around?
  • I don't want to leave my friends behind when school ends
  • How not to pull an all-nighter (and stay sane if you have to)
  • Is there a way to flirt without being obvious?
I’m going into sixth grade next year—at the local junior high school! I am a nervous wreck. How can I get ready for next year and stay calm?

Dear Scared of Junior High,

A lot of girls feel nervous about a new school year, whether they are going into junior high, high school or fifth grade. Ask your sixth-grade friends if they are feeling jittery (I’m sure some are). And ask any older friends how they made the jump to junior high.

Also, try to visualize success. In other words, instead of picturing mean kids and tough homework assignments, think about how much fun it will be to see your friends all day and how much you like English, art, Spanish or your other favorite courses. Think about any after-school activities that appeal to you. Don’t go overboard—you don’t want to be busy every day. It’s important to have free time for relaxation and homework. But do sign up for a sport or chorus or chess or something because it’s a great way to build new skills and friendships.

As for schoolwork, get the new year off to a flying start by practicing good study habits. This just may be your best year yet!

I felt the same way about going to middle school I'm in 6th grade now and the best thing to do is when you get your schedule put a map of your school in a page protector or laminate it then use a dry erase marker and trace your schedule. And even if your school doesn't have lockers (mine doesn't) you will still need a lock for band and gym so get your lock early and practice through out the summer. It helps a lot! If you have siblings try to see who can crack the lock the fastest Smile

I Just went into eigth grade, but i still remember how it felt to go into junior high (6th grade at my school). At first i thought it was so scary but its actually way better than elementry school! Although, alot of people change so much. i have lost a couple of friends because they changed and now we dont even talk because she is one of the "popular" kids now. but i still have my BFFs. Smile

i go to a catholic/private scchool and every one knows snce the day u walk into kindergarten, btu were merging with to other schools know! i dont even know a quater of the kids know and i heard that alot of kids at wc r mean, what should i do?

Hey girl,

Don't sweat it! You've heard they're mean, but you don't know for sure. So there's no reason to be nervous or put up your guard. Instead, go into your new "merged" school with a smile. Be nice and confident in convos with everyone. Don't be afraid to sit at a new lunch table, or to lean over and introduce yourself to your neighbor in class. Especially your first week, everyone will be expecting this! So take advantage of it and get to know as many of your new classmates as possible Smile

So im going into middle school and my friend and i both made the challenge bloc. Im freaking out because most of the kids in there have been in challenge since elementary school. Plus its 7th and 8th grade. I dont know if ill be able to do all the homework and work too even though it is in my best subjects. Im just super scared.n

Hey girl,

Congrats! Don't be scared, but do be ready to do some work. With your bestie by your side, you two can have study seshes whenever you want, and she can help explain tricky concepts.

So I'm going into a new eighth grade next year and I'm nervous! I came from a really small alternative montessori school where there were like ten seventh grade girls. I'm going to a huge public school this year and I'm FREAKED! is there anything i can do to:
Remember my locker #?
Make friends fast?
get from class to class fast?

Hey girlie, keep your locker information inside something like your planner that you'll always carry around with you. Be super outgoing and talk to everyone! It'll be easy to make friends that way. To get to class quickly use a map of the school to find the quickest way to go and make sure that you're ready to leave class when the bell rings so you don't waste time packing up.

I found out what my middle school math class is and I'm really disappointed. All my friends got into a really high math class and I'm two math classes lower. I feel really stupid and all my friends say I'm not. My mom says she is really proud of me, but I'm not proud of me! How can I cope with this disappointment?
Math Failure

Hey girl,

You definitely shouldn't be disappointed in yourself at all. We're all better at different things. For example, I'm better at English than my best friend is, and she's better at science. That's just the way things work. But there's always room to improve, so you can work really hard this year and next year you might be placed in a higher class. x0x0

Today I went to visit the middle school that I'm going to be attending. I wanna carry a tote bag with me, but a lot of them I've seen in stores are huge and they wouldn't fit in my locker.....
I was just wondering if you knew of any places that they sell affordable tote bags? I'm going into sixth and the lockers are pretty average.........
Thanks! Smile

Hey girl, you actually carry your tote around with you in middle school: you keep your books in there for classes. The locker serves as a place to keep the books you aren't using: for example, if you have French and English in the mornings, you'll carry those books in your tote. Then in the afternoon, after lunch, you'll switch those books out for your afternoon classes' books.

MOD I just joined yearbook. What do u do in yearbook. I know what I'm saying is rude. But I'm scared to be with weird people. I'm not sure why. All my life I've been nerdy but not not nerdy. I really want to make more friends in high school. This will be my freshman year and we are separated from the upperclassman in different buildings. I need more ways to be more social. Please help!  thank you

Hey babe. I don't know what it is like at your school, but the gals in year book at my old highschool were kind of popular. It depends on the school. Yearbook is a great way to get to know people in all grades. What you will be doing probably consists of writing descriptions, taking pictures, figuring out how to lay out pics and text, etc. Get involved with things that interest you is a great way to get more social! Reps getting ruined by joining 'geeky' clubs is way over exagerated!

Don't be afraid. If your going to a junior high that none of your friends are going to I'd be scared too. If your going to junior high with all your buds then consider yourself lucky because you won't have to deal with a brand new school that's completely different from elementary.

Don't be scared about junior high. I just graduated 8th grade and i was completely fine. Plus 8th and 7th graders arent as bad as you think. We mostly just use the phrase "8th grade privilege." 6th grade was regrettably also one of the worst years of my life. A word of advice find your true friends and not the friends that make fun of you behind you back and then pretend to be your bff when your around. But look for the friend(s) that will always be there for you and most importantly accepts you for who you are and loves every bit of you just the way you are. Also try to stay away from facebook/twitter/etc. because it can and will start A LOT of fights in any school.

I'm going to be a freshman this year, and I'm REALLY scared of high school! It's especially bad since I'm entering our school's TV Production class, which is NOT OPEN FOR 9TH GRADERS!!! I only got in because I'm really good with video making. I'm afraid that the rest of the class will be mean to me and stuff. I'm also afraid that I won't be able to keep up with the rest of the students who have had way more experience than me and I'm not so good at thinking of ideas for videos. How can I feel better about this AND be able to get really good ideas for films?

Hey girl, trust me when I say your peers in that class won't even know you're a freshman if you don't say it. Just be yourself and focus on your work. No one is going to be mean to you or make fun of you if you're nice and friendly to everyone!

Instead I'm going into high school but that's okay! the only thing is locker space for my school was a tight squeeze but you will learn methods on that situation later! If you have a small cube locker, whatever you do, do NOT push your binder or book into your locker when it's full! What I mean is don't put it in front of all your books standing straight up. take it from a true camper they have to get a janitor to pry it out! lolSmile Good Luck junior high freshies! lol

I felt nervous, like I was going to get lost, but it turned out to be super easy, and I never got as much homework as I thought. Most of 6th grade is a review of 5th, but you do learn some new things. Don't worry, maybe you'll get into sports like cross-country or cheer. I had a blast. Hey babe! I get why you're confused. I would take your cousin's advice and not answer. If that guy actually does want to go out with you then he should buck up the courage and ask and your exBF can stay out of it, he sounds like a total loser. I can't tell if your exBF was just kidding around, but it's better not to think too much about it, like you said, you don't have time to concern yourself with their petty little tricks. I only got lost once the first day, and other than that it was smooth sailing. Hey girl, it gets easier each time you're on stage, but having that attitude — that you're ready for the next chance — is a great start. Talk to your teacher about what you can do and what opportunities there may be to perform on stage in the interim. She'll admire your desire to tackle your stage fright and improve.

I am going into 8th grade and I don't if I should wear makeup. I pratice in my room but I want to try and wear it to school. But I'm worried my friends will think its werid cause they are kinda tomboyish.

Hey girlie, just wear enough makeup to play up your features subtly. If you don't wear tons of makeup they probably won't say anything.

Okay so I am going to 7th grade but when I was your age I thought everyone would act snoby because I had never been to a private school before. I loved it. Dont worry u r going 2 luv Middle School. Its a little harder because you have to find all of your classes but after a little while you will get used to it.

Well I'm going into 7th grade which is my 2nd year of middle school. But last summer I felt the exact same way you did. But if you figure out who your teachers are and where all of your classes are then that'll calm you down a bit. Also just try and branch ou to people and talk to 'em. Also, in 6th grade I was good enough to make the volleyball team and I met SO MANY NEW FRIENDS!! You should really try to join a sports team or club or somethin. Good Luck you'll do fine Smile

I just got out of 6th grade and i remeber feeling that way. Just remember your not the only one going to a new school. The teachers will help you if you need directions or extra locker help or anything. If you are like me or how i was lockers wont be a problem they are very simple. ALso if you just need suport come to GL and ask me any questions (that is to anyone). Also counclers at your school can help you with any IN school issues or concerns. Just relax and know you will do great. Good luck! <3 You will be fine Smile

if i make myself look older will that help?
thanks, Love Larissa.

Hey girlie, just be outgoing and friendly. Make an effort to make new friends and you will. Age doesn't have that much to do with it.

Middle school isn't so bad. Honestly, if you don't cause trouble, you won't end up in trouble. I don't mean with teachers, but with friends and older kids and other things like that. One word of advice, though: don't act like you're too cool for everyone, older kids included. Most of the older kids are nice and will actually talk to you, but if you act like you're the center of the whole universe, they find you annoying.

Ok I going to junior high next year and I am really worried. I just started getting visted by Aunt flow and we HAVE to swim. Youu can't wear pads in water and tampons scare me. I used a tampon once and it made me sick. I hate the fact you have to "insert" them in you. My mom said she would contact the nurse and swim teacher when school starts up but what happends if they say I can't skip it during my period???? PLease Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey girlie, don't worry about what might happen until you find out. It's totally possible that they'll excuse you during your period, and if they don't then you can figure out what to do.

Im going to middle school and i feel like its the perfect time to enhance my looks with makeup...but how do i ask my mom? ((i just wanna wear eyeliner..like peach white brown eyeliners)) pls help Smile

Hey girl,

Tell her that you feel like you're mature enough to wear it now and don't want to do anything drastic, just use it so it looks natural and so it enhances your features.  Also, if you tell her that you want her to come makeup shopping with you, it'll make her feel like she has more control, so she'll be more likely to let you use it. Good luck! x0x0

im also going to 6th grade. im not scared at all, in fact, im very excited! but im afraid the older kids will bully and tease all of my friends and i. WHAT DO I DO!?

Hey girl!

There's no reason why anybody should bully you and your friends, but if you notice that there are some unfriendly kids in the older grades, just try to avoid them. Also, if you are nice to everyone and always have a smile on your face, nobody will even have any reason to be mean to you! x0x0

im going to be 14 in a couple months and i recently started shaving "down there" now it feels weirdd... idk what im really asking.. but idk what to do.. i feel really uncomfortable sometimes...
please help me

 Hey girl,

If it doesn't feel comfortable, you should probably stop doing it. Waxing is another option, or you could just quit the hair removal altogether. Some girls don't like how it makes them feel, and you shouldn't feel any pressure to do it. x0x0

whats the difference between middle school and junior high... (i go to middle school)

Hey girl,

In some areas, they include different grades (like middle school might be 6th-8th grade, or junior high might be 7th-9th grade). It all just depends on your area. x0x0

Why do some schools do that? My elementary school went k-6 and now im in middle school and its just 7-8. Its weird how schools go k-5 and then 6-8. But its not scary. Some girls might get meaner, you might lose some friends but you'll gain more friends. Its hard but every1 gets through it. Casey L.

I started wearing a bra at age 8
ive had armpit and pubic hair for 2 months
ive been having alot of stomach pains and gas lately
i had my first bearkout a week ago
thx!

Hey babe! There is no schedule of when you'll get your period. It sounds like you're developing pretty early though. Talk to your mom or doctor about it, they can help too, but it sounds to me like you have all the warning signs. xoxo
