Dear Scared of Junior High,
A lot of girls feel nervous about a new school year, whether they are going into junior high, high school or fifth grade. Ask your sixth-grade friends if they are feeling jittery (I’m sure some are). And ask any older friends how they made the jump to junior high.
Also, try to visualize success. In other words, instead of picturing mean kids and tough homework assignments, think about how much fun it will be to see your friends all day and how much you like English, art, Spanish or your other favorite courses. Think about any after-school activities that appeal to you. Don’t go overboard—you don’t want to be busy every day. It’s important to have free time for relaxation and homework. But do sign up for a sport or chorus or chess or something because it’s a great way to build new skills and friendships.
As for schoolwork, get the new year off to a flying start by practicing good study habits. This just may be your best year yet!

POSTED IN school, bust school stress, advice from Carol Weston
I felt the same way about going to middle school I'm in 6th grade now and the best thing to do is when you get your schedule put a map of your school in a page protector or laminate it then use a dry erase marker and trace your schedule. And even if your school doesn't have lockers (mine doesn't) you will still need a lock for band and gym so get your lock early and practice through out the summer. It helps a lot! If you have siblings try to see who can crack the lock the fastest

I remember when i was going into middle school.... Just be yourself!! Practice saying your classes over and over again in your head. Stay on top of your homework and you will do fine! I promise!

I Just went into eigth grade, but i still remember how it felt to go into junior high (6th grade at my school). At first i thought it was so scary but its actually way better than elementry school! Although, alot of people change so much. i have lost a couple of friends because they changed and now we dont even talk because she is one of the "popular" kids now. but i still have my BFFs.

by dreamergirl420 on 8/11/2011 12:00:37 PM
yeah, the books and movies DO make middle school seem worse. As a 7th grader, i say just be yourself. ( i know, real corny but it's true )
by carleygirl on 8/9/2011 4:28:28 PM
The first day, no first week everyone is scared and confused. My homeroom we would all like stand in a group and try and figure out were we were supposed to go next. We became pretty close all of us.
by reeses150 on 8/4/2011 1:21:09 PM
I have a middle school and am going into 7th grade. Do your homework and make friends and you'll be fine. Movies and books make it seem worse.

junior high is a scary place but its also really fun theres so much more to do heres some advice btw im going into 8th grade find a teacher u can trust my math teacher miss siebert was always there for everyone usuallly the teacher is the young fun one not old mean crabby one keep up on ur skool work or u could end up in study club or worse flunk there are a lot of cliques like emos rich ppl nd cool ppl then the "nerds" nd "geeks" just try to stay away frm the "shady" ppl u know the druggies nd gangsters not to scare u or anything but the police visit my school at least 1ce a week nd i know someone in a mental hospital just try not to worry if ur cool or not just be different in a good way cuz ppl really dnt care
by teamrachel1115 on 7/21/2011 10:23:00 PM
Don't be afraid. If your going to a junior high that none of your friends are going to I'd be scared too. If your going to junior high with all your buds then consider yourself lucky because you won't have to deal with a brand new school that's completely different from elementary.
by NewBoyzfan4ever on 7/20/2011 10:10:01 PM
Don't be scared about junior high. I just graduated 8th grade and i was completely fine. Plus 8th and 7th graders arent as bad as you think. We mostly just use the phrase "8th grade privilege." 6th grade was regrettably also one of the worst years of my life. A word of advice find your true friends and not the friends that make fun of you behind you back and then pretend to be your bff when your around. But look for the friend(s) that will always be there for you and most importantly accepts you for who you are and loves every bit of you just the way you are. Also try to stay away from facebook/twitter/etc. because it can and will start A LOT of fights in any school. -Nymphadora
by ImJustMe96 on 7/20/2011 2:24:19 PM
Don't worry about junior high. I passed 6th and 7th grade flying colors and I intend on 8th grade to be the same way. it's not as bad as people say it is. Just..... relax....

by annies19 on 7/19/2011 3:02:40 PM
I don't mean to discourage you, but just so you're perpared going in, 6th grade was the worst year of my life. I was bullied with two guy friends at my side(and so were they), cyberbullied, and the best advice I can give you is to NOT go to a snobby private school and DO hang out with funny, unpopular guys. Not girls. Guys.
by madipogo on 7/18/2011 8:57:25 PM
Junior High is not that bad once you get into it.

by bubbly107 on 7/4/2011 11:18:05 PM
Believe me chicas, junior high is a breeze you will absolutely adore the more freedom, cute guys, and easy classes! For me 6th grade was great I would go back anytime!!!! Instead I'm going into high school but that's okay! the only thing is locker space for my school was a tight squeeze but you will learn methods on that situation later! If you have a small cube locker, whatever you do, do NOT push your binder or book into your locker when it's full! What I mean is don't put it in front of all your books standing straight up. take it from a true camper they have to get a janitor to pry it out! lol Good Luck junior high freshies! lol
by bubbly107 on 7/4/2011 11:06:36 PM
The a new school year is just around the corner, and I've moved again it's my 8th school and I'm entering 7th grade. I have the experience of making new friends more than once, but every school I go to people keep on getting meaner can you give me some tips on new making friends? In the house next door to mine there's a girl my age is there anyway we can be BFF's in a snap?

I felt nervous, like I was going to get lost, but it turned out to be super easy, and I never got as much homework as I thought. Most of 6th grade is a review of 5th, but you do learn some new things. Don't worry, maybe you'll get into sports like cross-country or cheer. I had a blast. My two favorite things were the dances and band!
by Januaryfairy on 7/2/2011 9:22:55 AM
I felt the same way at the beginning of the summer before sixth grade- then the day before I started, I totally forgot about it! Then the morning of, I was just super excited. The only real thing to get used to is class schedules (they're super easy after a few days), and having more teachers. And of course, the locker, but we all had cubbies in first grade, didn't we? These are just way more private. You'll be fine. :-D Good luck!
by Fmwhitt on 7/2/2011 8:48:48 AM
I am going to 5th grade but I'm not really scared.....I am kind of excited because now in the summer theres nothing to do unless school projects and other stuff. For some reason I am kind of excited about the work too. Because I love learnig about wars an dour teachers will be awesome. This is my last year to spend with my bff Arden then she's going to GPS.....Then it will just be me and my other Bff Kalyn. But still.. I JUST CANT wait!!!!!!!!!!!
by Jessy4132001 on 7/2/2011 8:37:54 AM
dont worry i had the same feeling going in but its actually just like elementary school just with more teachers, newkids ect nothing to worry about youll be totally fine!
by ljlove on 7/1/2011 10:27:07 PM
i was nervous too, but i love junior high!!! the only thing i didnt like was my locker size.
by esk8 on 7/1/2011 1:30:23 PM
It's not scary. Don't worry, honey The kids aren't really mean, and you get to hang out with more friends every day. Concentrate on the pros, not the cons. Just smile and say hi to all your friends, you'll be fine

im going into 8th grade i cant wait 7th grade really sucked and i heard it from everyone that its the hardest grade but then next im going into high school im scared for that but i still have a whole year until then so ill just live in the present instead of thinking about the past and future
by girlslifeluver on 6/30/2011 11:43:16 PM
I was afraid to go to 6th grade too but it's not actually that scary. The older kids aren't really mean and usually everyone is willing to help. As long as you stay with your friends, you'll have a great year.
by teamjacob3236 on 6/30/2011 11:24:39 PM
im going into 8th grade and i <3 middle skool (well xcept the fact its skool but watevr) anyways i made like a zillion new friends so you'll have more friends. i only had like 10 friend in elementary and now i have like a ton like i count even count em all. middle skool is a heck of a lot bettr than elementary
by oceanlover69 on 6/30/2011 10:58:19 PM
I'm going into 8th grade next year, and I was also super nervous, excited, and anxious for middle school. Honestly, it isn't that hard. I only got lost once the first day, and other than that it was smooth sailing. Don't be shy, cliques form pretty fast and if there's one regret I had, it was not befriending people right away before the preps found the preps and the jocks found the jocks and the nerds found the nerds; by making friends regardless of social status, appearance, and/or rumors, make friends by socializing
by basketballchick98 on 6/30/2011 10:32:22 PM
LUCKY! I wish I was still in middle school. Actually, never mind, I hated it- worse 3 years of my life. Well, I liked 7th grade. I just wish I had that work"load". (I'm going to be a junior (3rd year) in highschool next year)
by DrAmAxQuEeNx202! :) on 6/30/2011 10:03:28 PM

by Hale Luver on 6/30/2011 8:23:50 PM
We had an orientation when I went into junior high... it made us calm down I lil' bit.. but after our registration we could go in anytime and practice our locker combo... really nice. But if you are a worry wart like me... you can make a school map, and make out when you can go to your locker...

Okay so I am going to 7th grade but when I was your age I thought everyone would act snoby because I had never been to a private school before. I loved it. Dont worry u r going 2 luv Middle School. Its a little harder because you have to find all of your classes but after a little while you will get used to it. -Peace

by ModelingAlexis on 6/30/2011 7:13:35 PM
Well I'm going into 7th grade which is my 2nd year of middle school. But last summer I felt the exact same way you did. But if you figure out who your teachers are and where all of your classes are then that'll calm you down a bit. Also just try and branch ou to people and talk to 'em. Also, in 6th grade I was good enough to make the volleyball team and I met SO MANY NEW FRIENDS!! You should really try to join a sports team or club or somethin. Good Luck you'll do fine
by kirstykirst123 on 6/30/2011 5:50:39 PM
I just got out of 6th grade and i remeber feeling that way. Just remember your not the only one going to a new school. The teachers will help you if you need directions or extra locker help or anything. If you are like me or how i was lockers wont be a problem they are very simple. ALso if you just need suport come to GL and ask me any questions (that is to anyone). Also counclers at your school can help you with any IN school issues or concerns. Just relax and know you will do great. Good luck! <3 You will be fine

by Little Miss Love Me on 6/30/2011 5:27:36 PM
Middle school isn't so bad. Honestly, if you don't cause trouble, you won't end up in trouble. I don't mean with teachers, but with friends and older kids and other things like that. One word of advice, though: don't act like you're too cool for everyone, older kids included. Most of the older kids are nice and will actually talk to you, but if you act like you're the center of the whole universe, they find you annoying.

by CherryGirl316 on 6/30/2011 12:49:47 PM
i'm going to 7th grade, so i know how you feel. but it's not that bad. if you're used to moving from class to p.e. or something like that, you'll get used to moving from math, to science, and so on. probably by the first quarter, you'll get over it. good luck!
by dorali411 on 6/30/2011 12:34:24 PM
Why do some schools do that? My elementary school went k-6 and now im in middle school and its just 7-8. Its weird how schools go k-5 and then 6-8. But its not scary. Some girls might get meaner, you might lose some friends but you'll gain more friends. Its hard but every1 gets through it. Casey L.

Ok well I just got outta 6th grade and I felt the same wayu you did last summer. But if you go to the school before the year starts and get your schedules and find out who your teachers are and where your classes are then that'll calm you down some. Also I tried out for the volleyball team and made it and loved it and I made a bunch of new friends. So try out for a sports team or club or something. And talk to people just say hi and smile. AND JUST CALM DOWN! Good luck you'll do fine in middle school
by kirstykirst123 on 6/30/2011 9:37:26 AM
I'm going into junior high, but I am not scared at all because in the end of the school year the guidance counselor took us to all of the separate teachers in the junior high and they talked to us about junior high. That totally made me wayyyyy more confident then I was before!
by nerdisthewurd26 on 6/30/2011 9:36:05 AM
although u may think high school is really hard. dont phsyc yourself out its really fun! i just graduated middle/junior high and there arent bullys that want your lunch money or cliques that will spill paint on your white jeans. sure there are the cheerleaders and the jocks but they're not bad It's really fun! It only takes u a few days to learn your classes so its not that bad. teachers very but its not that jurastic of a change. You'll love it. you'll feel small at first but then u see the 5th graders that u once were and you can call yourself a middle schooler
