How To: Pack for your hiking trip

Heading to the great outdoors for a hiking trip? If you’re not sure what to pack, leave the tent toting to your parents. We’ve got the best gear to keep ya lookin’ fab (and feeling energized) when you reach the summit.

Energy and hydration

Fuel up on protein-rich snacks. You can’t go wrong with some good ol’ fashion trail mix or homemade energy bars. To stay hydrated, bring at least a 1 liter bottle of water. It may feel heavy at the beginning of the day, but it will be most likely be empty towards the end.

REI Nalgene Everyday Wide-Mouth Loop-Top Water Bottle - 32 fl. oz., $10, rei.com

Insider's tip: Bring a few plastic baggies to store your trash until you find a garbage can. This keeps the trail beautiful for other hikers.

Sturdy boots

Picking the right shoes is crucial. For strenuous or rocky terrains, opt for durable boots with ankle support. For lighter hiking, a pair of running shoes with good traction will do the job. Double-check with your parents first to see which is best for your trip.

Columbia Coremic Ridge™ 2, $65, zappos.com

Insider’s tip: Bring a few pairs of wool or synthetic socks for sturdier boots. Anything made from cotton might give you blisters. Ouch!

Breathable top

A comfortable top is key when lugging around your packing bag. Pick a top that’s breathable so you won’t get overheated.

Nike Pro-Core Fitted Women’s Training Shirt, $25, nike.com

Insider’s tip: Bring layers! It might be summer, but it gets cold at night, so stash a sweatshirt and windbreaker.

Flexible pants

For moderate climates, choose yoga or workout pants. Avoid anything too baggy or long, so you don’t snag on something or trip over yourself.

Women’s Team Girl Fitness Capris, $40, underarmor.com

Insider’s tip: Hiking somewhere warmer? Check out our fave workout shorts.

Packing bag

Why ruin your cute school backpack in the great outdoors? Get a bag that can handle the elements. This durable bag is lightweight and flips inside out to stash all your items at night.

REI Flash 18 Pack, $30, rei.com

Insider’s tip: Don’t forget the SPF! Even if there’s snow at the top of the mountain, the reflection could give you a nasty burn.
