Build your babysitting kit

  • Find a job this summer! Step one: Ready your resume
A great babysitter always arrives to sitting jobs on time, smiling and 100-percent prepared. And for my super-sitter sweeties—that’s you!—that means toting along a DIY babysitting kit sure to wow your teeny charges…and their ‘rents. It’s time to get creative and dig into your own childhood to pull together a bag full of fun surprises. Who knows? A good reference (and some extra dough) could be sittin’ at the end of the activity bag rainbow!

Pick a bag, any bag

While any bag will do, we love the idea of heading to a crafts store to grab a plain canvas bag and some decorating tools. Think: Puff paint, fabric markers, patches and other fun decorations. Jazz up your bag, but be sure to keep it kid-friendly. Rhinestones are fun, but if they fall off, they could become choking hazards for tots.

Consider house rules

Before you start throwing things into your kit, you need to take a minute to think about the rules your charge’s parents have set down. If little Tina isn’t allowed to have sweets, don’t slip a baggie of homemade cookies in to tempt her. And if M&D would rather Johnny not play with soldiers and toy guns, skip the squirt guns and G.I. Joe dolls.

What did you love to do?

Kids are way more enthusiastic when they can tell you love joining in on an activity. And trust us, they can spot a faker across the playroom! Bring along picture or chapter books that you adored when you were learning how to read, or a particularly awesome child-appropriate movie you know they won’t have seen yet. Arts and crafts are always a hit, but if you’re more into watercolors than finger paints, bring along some watercolor pencils. A few old Barbies or your brother’s action figures won’t go amiss, either.

Personalize it!

The tots you’re taking care of will feel oh-so-special if they know you packed your bag especially for them—particularly if you sit for multiple families. Take care to tailor your stash to their preferences. Dress-up clothes for Amy, who loves pretending she’s a princess, will be a hit. But for tomboy Sally, something more outdoor-oriented, like a plan for a scavenger hunt or a pair of binoculars, might be more appropriate.

Mix it up

While some favorites do bear repeating, you’ll want to refresh your babysitter’s kit every so often, especially for frequent sitting clients. It could be swapping Monopoly Jr. for Trouble when you hang out with the board-game lover. Playing pretend? Challenge children to come up with different games using one dress-up piece, like a tiara, fairy wings or a black cape.

What do you pack in your babysitting kit, babes? Don’t leave it behind!

Any ideas on how to advertise my services? I have everything I need to babysit- except kids. All the kids I babysat are too old now. Help?

Hey girlie, talk to the parents that you used to babysit for to see if they know anyone that might be looking for a babysitter. You can also ask around your neighborhood to see if anyone knows someone with younger kids.

MOD MOD MOD I'm 13 years old and I REALLLLLLLLYYYYY want to babysit. Everyone says I'm really good with kids. I really love kids and I think I would make a good babysitter. There is only one family I have in mind when I think of babysitting. They live on the street above me and they have two kids, six years old and two years old. Is 13 too young to start babysitting? I really want to get a job but no one wants to hire a thirteen year old. Please help!

Hey chica! I'm soo sorry but I'm super busy trying to respond to everyone's comments! I'll get back to you as soon as I can! In the meantime ask some of the other GL members who offer advice help! I'm sure they'll be more than happy to dish out some advice! Thanx for understanding!!!! Smile Smile

So, i have been babysitting for these twin boys since they were 8months old, and now they are over 3 1/2. I sorta want a raise, but i can barely ask for my pay check with out feeling pushy. I get paid 3$for mothers helping and 5$ for babysitting... do you think that is enough to be paid in a small town in CT???

Hey girl, it's hard to say, but I think it depends on the neighbor. You can set your rate but understand there's others who can do what you're doing. Be thankful you have the gig right now and let your performance show you're deserving of a raise.

Hey babe! I'm sure they have things like video games and sports equipment that they like to play with so you shouldn't worry about bringing anything with you. Just keep the hyper kid moving, outside, then when he comes inside his energy will be used up. Ask your aunt what to do if he gets really hyper, she'll know and be able to tell you what to do. xoxo

My parents say I'm too young to babysit, but the also say I'm supermature and I'm amazing with little kids. How can I get my parents to open up a little?

Hey girl, I think most places, you have to be over 13 to babysit so despite your maturity, they may have a point legally. That said, ask them why they think you're too young and hear them out: that act in and of itself shows you're mature because you're listening without interrupting.

Do you know what kind of places would hire a 13 year old? I babysit already, but an actual job would be nice. I know I could handle it! Any advice? Thank you!!!

Hey girl,

In a lot of states, 13 is too young for a real job so for now you'll just have to stick with babysitting. x0x0

I'm a babysitter, And what i recomend is not just sitting there watching the kids... Get up and interact with them! Thats the way to do it. I akways bring myself a book to read in case they go to sleep and im bored. They kids i babysit lovveee going to the park too! there are 2 parks right by my house so its very convient. And i try to bring coloring books and stuff but they just love playing with their own toys and do their own things. We actually love playing a game with the small kiddie tent they have. I make the 2 kids go in and i stand outside of it and say something like "The bear is gonna get you!" and they get real quite and i walk around the tent shaking it and making the animal noises and then i pop in and scare them! they laugh so hard! So sometimes they little is what you have to do. (:

Im babysitting 7 7 to 9 year olds. Me and my friend made up a system where we pick categorys like best behavior or since we decided to let them do a play, most memorized lines and most helpful, ect. And we give them a reward at the end of the day. So far its been working pretty well. For rewards for whoever gets the award we give then candy or icecream because they are 7 to 9 year olds they wont take anything else! But if you dont want to give them candy you could also let them pick the next movie you watch or make up the next game you play or choose what is for snack the next day. It has worked pretty well, I hope it worksfor you too.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD I am babysitting 3 girls at my house and my mom says I should spend some money on toys and games and we should also buy a new first aid kit. The thing is the mom's not even paying me enough for babysitting her 3 girls full time and I don't want to lose money, but I do think the girls should be entertained somehow. I have no idea what to do!

Hey girly girl! There are plenty of ways to entertain them without spending money! Maybe, give each other makeovers and pain their nails. Or, pop in a movie. Or, you can bake something with them! Smile

MOD MOD MOD: Hey! I have 2 questions: 1. My 2 cousins,my aunt,& my uncle are coming to stay at my house in a month. I'm not throwing a paty or anything major,I just wanted to decorate the room they'll see first. I already make a "Welcome" poster, what else could I do? Lots of ideas please! 2. I also wanted to make them each a small gift basket, what could I make the girls and what could I make the boys?

Hey girly,
You could probably stick balloons around the room or streamers and other decorations like that. As for crafts, it may not be Christmas, but this article should help. http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/12/05/GREAT-GIFTS-FAST-Create-piles-of-prezzieswithout-spending-piles.aspx.

In my babysitting kit, I like to put all the books, music and movies the kids like. I also put in lots of craft supplies. I keep the colored pencils, markers, crayons, erasers, pencils, etc in a plastic baggie and I doodle on the outside of the bag with colorful sharpies (it attracts the kids attention!). I also include some toys, like board games, stuffed animals and summer toys are a big hit. I recommend putting this stuff separately in a small shoe box and label it (for example, "crafts", "toys") and then putting into a bag. That way you don't have to dig for hours for a pencil, it's in the....you guessed it.....crafts box!! Just some tips Smile

Hey girly,
It sometimes can be tough to grow up but try to be positive and think about all the cool stuff that you are able to do now that you are older. Maybe there are some privledges that your parents give you now that you didn't have when you were younger. Maybe you have gotten to try certain things too. Either way, we all have to grow up someday and it will only make us sad to think about it in a bad way. Try to stay postive girly!
