How to survive a family vacation

Check these out, too...

  • Oy vey! Am I allowed to have this crush?
  • Should you tell him how ya feel before school ends?

  • Should you stay with your BF over summer?
Family vacations can be tough, but let’s face it: You’re stuck with your parents and sibs for good, so why not make the most of your time together? These tips will help you ditch the arguing for bonding and just enjoy being with each other because it is supposed to be a vacation, after all.

Stay busy

If you’ve got a long trip ahead of you, stick some fun games in the car or your backpack for guaranteed laughs. Games like Bananagrams, below, are so easy to travel with and you can pull them out whenever you want. Forgot to bring games? Playing the license plate game by trying to find a license plate from each state, or even making up some of your own games works just as well…and will even bring out the creativity in you and your fam!

Banagrams, $15, amazon.com

Catch up

It’s so easy to disconnect from your family through all the hustle-bustle of BFFs and boys, so use this time that you have with everyone to really catch up. If you missed your brother’s soccer game or your sister’s ballet recital, ask them about it. They’ll love knowing that you care about their lives, and it will give you some bonding time before all the craziness of school starts up again.

Carve out some alone time

Sure, family vacations are meant for spending time together and regrouping as a family, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend every waking minute together. Be sure to schedule some alone time for yourself, or else you may just go crazy. Take a walk, go for a swim in the hotel pool, or read a book—but put your family at ease by making sure they understand that after this, you’re all theirs again!

Come September, you’ll really be missing this time that you had to spend with your family, so don’t waste it by fighting or chatting on the phone with your friends the whole time. Instead, enjoy it and show the whole fam how much you actually love being with them.

ok so i saw my mom booking a plane flight and my sis saw her booking hotels.we dont know were we are goin because its supposed to be a surprise trip.i want to tell my mom that we know but im worried she will get mad and cancel the trip!
what should i do!!

Hey girl, its up to you. Sometimes surprises can be a good thing! If you really want to tell her, go for it. She might not cancel the trip.

Im so angry at my parents. I found out that they read every single text i've ever sent. At the exact time. To the exact number. And how many i've ever sent to that number. I feel so violated. I never tell them things because if i do then they're going to flip out and probably start to read my diary! When they didn't know the numbers that i was texting..THEY TRACKED DOWN THE NUMBERS, THE GUYS FULL NAMES, even their ADDRESS. Such creeps! I've stopped talking to them and i can't even look at them anymore because i feel so violated. How do i get them to stop!

Hey babe,

Try to keep in mind two things: 1) they're looking in order to make sure you're not giving away too much personal info and that you're safe (which I know, super annoying - but they care! Which is really important to remember when you're feeling upset), and 2) they pay the cell phone bill so they sorta have a right to know what you're doing with it. Personally, if I had a prob with how my parents were treating my phone, I'd probably try to save up the cash and offer to pay for my plan myself. That way, I was in full control! If there's no way of that happening though, I'd try striking some sort of agreement with them. Let them know that you'll tell them who you're going to text before you text someone new for the first time (and your background with them - like how you know them) if they agree not to read your actual texts. It's sorta like getting approval before you go out with a friend for the first time. You tell your parents who they are, but you don't bring your parents along, if that makes sense <3

My family and I are going camping in a week or so, but we recently found out that freshman orientation is the day we were going to come back. So my dad said we could leave early in the morning, but that idea completely stressed my mom out, and she said I have to choose between going to "an hour lecture or a four day family trip thats been planned for months", because she doesn't want a stressful ride home, and will ditch the whole trip if we have to rush that last morning. I don't know how to handle the situation, since I know that I'll end up having to miss the orientation because my mom is making me choose. What do I do?

Hey chica! I'd definitely talk to your dad about this. He should be able to calm your mom down!
