How to survive a family vacation

Family vacations can be tough, but let’s face it: You’re stuck with your parents and sibs for good, so why not make the most of your time together? These tips will help you ditch the arguing for bonding and just enjoy being with each other because it is supposed to be a vacation, after all.

Stay busy

If you’ve got a long trip ahead of you, stick some fun games in the car or your backpack for guaranteed laughs. Games like Bananagrams, below, are so easy to travel with and you can pull them out whenever you want. Forgot to bring games? Playing the license plate game by trying to find a license plate from each state, or even making up some of your own games works just as well…and will even bring out the creativity in you and your fam!

Banagrams, $15, amazon.com

Catch up

It’s so easy to disconnect from your family through all the hustle-bustle of BFFs and boys, so use this time that you have with everyone to really catch up. If you missed your brother’s soccer game or your sister’s ballet recital, ask them about it. They’ll love knowing that you care about their lives, and it will give you some bonding time before all the craziness of school starts up again.

Carve out some alone time

Sure, family vacations are meant for spending time together and regrouping as a family, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend every waking minute together. Be sure to schedule some alone time for yourself, or else you may just go crazy. Take a walk, go for a swim in the hotel pool, or read a book—but put your family at ease by making sure they understand that after this, you’re all theirs again!

Come September, you’ll really be missing this time that you had to spend with your family, so don’t waste it by fighting or chatting on the phone with your friends the whole time. Instead, enjoy it and show the whole fam how much you actually love being with them.

MOD MOD MOD I can't stand my life! My mom is grouchy and snippy, and takes everything out on me when she's mad. I get in trouble whenever she's annoyed with ANYONE. My dad is working out of state for the next month, and my younger sister gets under my skin until I blow up at her and I get in trouble. Oh yeah, we have an in-home daycare, so I have to get up at 7 am every morning and I can't go anywhere or have friends over. And my friends act like I don't exist! They never invite me over or even call me. My "best" friend has only invited me over once in the past year, and she lives five minutes away! They know my situation with daycare, but they act like they don't care. What can I do? I'm always angry and upset and can't have fun! Frown

Oh, girl. I'm so sorry you are having a tough time. Why not invite your friends out to a movie (maybe you can get some time off if you help out a lot)? If they still act this way, try talking to them. In the mean time try to make the best of things. Like the saying goes, kill em with kindness. Also, try to talk to your mom when she seems to be in a better mood about how you are feeling.

i fight with my brothers (12 and 9) sometimes and sometimes they can be sooooo hard to get along with, but i totally love them anyways. for example last night i made cupcakes and rice crispy treats with my little brother and me, my 12 year old bro, and my mom and going on a 3 day backcountry hiking trip at the end of the month. im soooo excited me and my bro both totally bond over hiking.

I honestly don't get why some people hate going on vacation with their family. Going to tropical destinations with my family is fun and always stress free. Even though we get in to spats at home, we leave that all behind to enjoy each other's company and to relax; it's a great time to catch up with each other because it 's putting our busy lives on pause. This year, we're going to Bermuda and I'm so psyched... I hope it's as fun as Hawaii was last year Smile

I have that game and my dog always grabs it and makes me chase it with this giant banana in his mouth Laughing Nothing will help me form not fighting with my sister...she is so mean. I would rather not even go on vacation :/
