The 411 on mixing friends

  • My best gal is branching out...and I'm not OK with it
I hang out with two groups of friends: my preppie friends from before and my sporty newer friends. My old friends complain that I hang out with my new friends too much, and vice versa. Last weekend, I stayed home alone because I didn’t know which group to hang out with and didn’t want to let anyone down. I tried to get them together to know each other better, but it didn’t work out. I don’t have one friend from either group who understands how hard it is for me to choose. Can you please give me ideas on what to do?

Dear Fought-Over Friend,

While going out with two guys is pretty much against the rules, having lots of different friends isn’t. You don’t really need to choose—there’s enough of you to go around and enough days in the summer to hang out with lots of people. If the old friends say, “Want to go to a movie?” you can say, “I’d love to,” or “Sorry, I made plans for tonight but how about tomorrow?”

Try not to feel apologetic or defensive—the more comfortable you are with the situation, the more comfortable others will feel. One more tip: Don’t spend your time with one group talking about what you like and what annoys you about the other group. Good luck!

Hey girl,

Your doctor can really help you out with this one, and can give you an ADD test or know someone who can. Good luck! x0x0

MOD MOD MOD!
I was looking at someone's profile on Gl and it said something about being sad and depressed and I said I'm always here if you need to talk and I think she is mad now cuz she posted on a club that I'm also now and she said "Don't contact me I'm fine on my own!" Idk who she was saying it to but I think it was me and now I feel really guilty for offering if she needed to talk to anyone! What do I do?

Hey girl,

That was really nice of you to say that to her.  She probably just needs some time to figure things out or wants to work some issues out on her own, so just let her be for now. But it was nice of you to try! x0x0

MOD MOD MOD
OK so my one BFF and I have been friends since preschool. We know like EVERYTHING about each other and we live on the same street and hang out all the time. I got really close with this other girl last school year. We don't live that close to each other but I see her at the pool and we text all the time. The problem is, my two really close friends hate each other! Whenever I'm with one they ask what I've been doing and if I say I've been hanging out with the other one, they say "You know I hate her..." HELP! I want to be able to hang out with them both at the same time and not have them get into some huge fight! And I don't want to choose one friend or the the other! What do I do?
