Babysitting bootcamp: Tiny tot 101

Check these out, too...

  • Be an awesome babysitter
  • 4 babysitting sitches--solved!
  • How to handle your top-5 big-time sitting probs
  • 7 signs you're a super sitter
  • How to get as many babysitting jobs as possible
My aunt and uncle are coming to visit, and they’re bringing their six-month-old daughter. I know I’ll be asked to babysit her, but I’ve never taken care of a baby before! What should I do?

Babies are so cute and entertaining, but they can also be quite a handful.  It’s great that your aunt and uncle trust you enough to give you this big responsibility, so you need to prove to them that you can handle it.  With just a little prep, you’ll be ready to take on this tot with ease!

Take a class

There are so many great resources in your area, so take advantage of them. See if the local community center or hospital offers a babysitting class that you can take to learn all the basics.  They’ll teach you CPR and show you how to handle tough situations, which will erase your worries. If you feel prepared before the job, you’ll be able to relax and just enjoy the time you’re spending with the adorable baby rather than worrying about those unwelcome surprises.

Talk to the ‘rents

Before you’re left alone with the child, make sure you talk to her parents about her specific likes and dislikes.  If she likes to hear “choo-choo” noises while being fed, or loves when her mom sings “Row Your Boat,” then be sure to write these down and repeat them later. The baby will feel more comfortable if you do things that are familiar to her, which will make your job a whole lot easier.  You should also be sure that you’ve got their numbers on speed dial, just in case any questions pop up while you’re on the job.

Stay alert

It’s crucial to stay with the child 100 percent of the time. Even though your besties won’t stop texting you or your BF is begging to come over, just say no.  Your attention should be focused on the baby, and you need to get rid of the distractions. Put the phone away and tell your guy you’ll meet him tomorrow, because watching a baby is a big responsibility. Be sure there are no small toys that she can choke on and double-check that her food is the right temp.  Keep this in the back of your mind: “If my aunt and uncle saw me now, would they think I’m doing a good job?” If the answer is no, then pull your focus together and make them proud they picked you to baby-sit.

Good luck, chica!

MOD MOD MOD how old do you think you should be to baby sit? Because im 13 and i don't know if i should start next summer. I am very responsible and i take care of my cousin's for free tho.

Hey girl, I think that's perf timing. I'd recommend starting off by babysitting older kids, like maybe only 2 years and up. Then once you're comfortable with that, you can go for the really little guys. I'm sure you'll do great!

MOD
I would really like to babysit (and I know you probably hear that a lot) but there aren't really any kids in my area that I could watch. I don't know what to do! I would really like to make some money because I have a lot of things I have to save for. Plus, summer is coming up and I would like to have at least one client by then. Thank you so much!

Hey girly!

To find babysitting gigs, you could check listings in your local newspaper or online on news or listing sites. There are a number of options in this article you could try out to make money as well. Hope that helps!

MOD!MOD!MOD!!!
This really has nothing to do with babysitting, but I am in 7th grade right now and am trying to save up for an apple laptop and I would like to get it either at the beginning of high school or at the end of my freshmen year. The model I want is $1299! I really don't want to get a cheap brand of laptop that will load very slowly and will run out of battery life in 2 hours. Do you have any ideas that I can do to make some extra money? I babysit sometimes for my aunt and uncle with my older sister but other than that she does all the babysitting in the neighborhood so I can't really take over because I don't know the kids or the parents very well. Any Ideas?? Oh and by the way, I get $5 each week for allowance and so far have saved up $60.

Hey girlie,

Congrats to your $60! That's awesome! Babysitting is definitely a good start to make some extra cash but also ask your 'rents if you can help out in the garden, with the dishes, or do the grocery shopping! I'm sure they can come up with extra chores for you if they know that you're trying to save up for a Mac! Good luck!

Hey babe,

Take the advice in this article! Depending on your commitment to babysitting, you don't have to take a class to get certified (although it does help). But the rest of the tips will be SUPER helpful for spreading the word and starting up that babysitting biz!

MOD! MOD! MOD! So, I would really like to become a babysitter! My parents and friends all say that I am great with kids and patient enough to listen & play with them. I was wondering if 12 is too young to be a babysitter? Also, What are some great ways to keep the child happy and busySmile Thx so MuchLaughing XoXo, *MusicGirl16*

Hey girlfriend, if the people you want to babysit for are okay with your age, then I don't think it is. You can read stories to them, play dress up, paint and color, and go outside and run around. Hope this helps and good luck!!!!! Smile Smile

Hey girlie! I totally recommend babysitting. It will be close to home and you can earn some serious cash. Also, a ton of people take vacations in the summer so you can offer to take care of their pets while they're gone. You can dog-walk, feed fish, anything! Lemonade stands just don't cut it anymore, huh? xoxo

When my baby cousin comes over (I dont really babysit but watch for a few while the parents talk)it is pretty easy to handle. First and most importantly you should know how to change a diaper. You should be prepared with picture books (make sure they are good for a 6 month old) and have a few toys for them if the parents don't bring any. Talk to them like a real person (not goo goo etc.)it is better for them. When you first see your cousin come up and lift her (so she knows your ok to be with). Know how to hold a baby and how to feed one too. Finally dont let your eyes of that baby (especially if they are mobil (some are and some arent at this age) Ask what the baby likes and doesnt like, what soothes them and bedtime rituals.

Mod i am babysitting tomorrow for a 9 year old, 2 year old, and 8 month old. How do i deal with the nine year old being hyper while trying to carefor the babies? Thanks!

Hey girl, I'd say a movie or bringing a special book for her to read is a great distraction for her. See too if she wants to help you take care of the little ones. She might feel special playing that boss/babysitter role with you.
