3 fun ways to cross-train before tryouts

Spending endless hours dribbling a soccer ball isn’t the only way to guarantee a spot on the squad. Pro trainer and lifelong athlete Jon Gallo is spilling the ways to up the ante before tryouts. He also says to remember the five S’s: speed, strength, stamina, skill and spirit. Hurrah!

Jog it out
“For all sports, the off-season is the time to build speed, agility and strength. Since most sports have running as a standard requirement, you should run at least one to two days a week,” he reveals.

Hop on the bike (or in the pool)
“To help build muscle, I really recommend indoor cycling and swimming. They’re easy on the body, but they build speed, strength and endurance. Both of these activities allow an athlete to incorporate resistance training into their regimen without overdoing it,” Jon says.

Get your yoga on
“To avoid over-training, soreness and injury, you should incorporate flexibility training after every workout session,” he spills. We’re hitting the mat now!

Cross training is really important to get fit. It gives your body a chance to strengthen the muscles you used in one workout, and work some new muscles

MOD MOD MOD! my dads side of my family is really into baseball. my brother plays college ball and my other brother plays 4 high school. my dad has a little league baseball team and sometimes plays men's softball with a lot of his friends and his brother. obviously i'm a girl so i cant play "baseball" (well i can but i sorda choose not 2 because i might get fun of and i have a bad temper) so i play softball. i really do LUV it! not because of my family. i wanna keep playing forever, possibly in college i'll play 2, but my heart is starting 2 go in a different direction. most of the summer i went to pools and beaches. i noticed i have gotten a lot faster than when i was on a swim team like 4/5 years ago. i'm beginning 2 really like it a lot more than i used to and i also want 2 improve my skills. i was wondering, should i join a swim team??? i still wanna play softball but i think i wanna be on a swim team. Should i join a swim team?????

Hey girl,

If your schedule isn't too packed, can you do both swimming and softball? Playing more than one sport will keep you super fit! If you still want to play competitive softball and can't do competitive swimming at the same time, you could see if your community center or hometown has a recreational swimming league where you can improve your swimming ability with less of the pressure.

MOD MOD MOD:
please answere this ASAP! I missed all the high school cheerleading try outs because of my cruise. My dad has an in with the coach and talked to her...she said i can try out rgt after my cruise...well its after my cruise and my tryouts are soon. The coach told me that i need to come up with a 30-40 second routine to The time (Dirty Bit) by Black eyed peas. Ive got atleast 20 seconds of a routine and i need help ASAP any sights to help me come up with a good routine?

Hey girly girl! I'd maybe talk with one of the girls who are already on the high school team and ask for some advice! They should know what the coach wants, and can help you learn some new stuff to use in it Smile

Mod Mod Mod Mod Hey, With all the shopping and talks with my bffs, I'm really starting to feel older, since I will be a freshman this year. But, I have volleyball tryouts in a week, and whenever I'm around all the other girls (there are 60 going out) I feel young and small again. I've been playing volleyball for a long time and have played with the older teams because I was asked by the coach. How can I get the Little Freshman feeling to go away? Thanks so much.

Hey girl. Show your skills! If the coach thinks you are great then you will begin to feel that way. Push yourself and have fun!

hey
for all of you that play volleyball, here are some tips for you.
To strengthen your serve take two 3-5 pound dumbbels and put them in both hands then do your technique. It will help strengthen your arms and strengthen your technique.(don't throw the dumbbells)

To help your bumping have someone throw a ball at you and theyy have to aim just a foot in front of you. They should throw harder if your advanced. It will improve your dig and dive.
hope this helps

MOD! does biking help improve running endurance even just a little bit? or are they just two completely different things?

Hey girl. Any time you work out in a prolonged manner, if you are doing some type of cardio, then you will be increasing your endurance. The difference between biking and running is impact on your body as you are in motion. So, if you are trying to run longer biking will help, but running/jogging with prepare you better. Try switching off to work out differently.

MOD MOD MOD
ok so i have like an oily face. it gets oily like during the day even though i wash my face twice a day. it really does this during skool, but when its like summer or the weekend it doesnt do this. why does it happen the way it does? also is there any way i could help this w/o spending tons of money? thnx

Hey girl,

My face always got super oily in school because of my subconscious actions during the school day. I didn't even notice most of the time, but I would play with my hair, rest my head on my hands while my teacher was talking, skip washing my face after gym class, etc. All of these things can transfer oil to our faces! So try to be more aware of what you're doing in school to cause the oil - then stop! Smile

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!
My friends and family are encouraging me to try sports this year for school but I don't really want to. I'm afraid that everyone will make fun of me because I don't know how to play. I've never been very athletic but I know I need exercise. I can either join sports or PE, which should I do? :/

Hey girlie,

It's great to try new things! Don't let the fear of the unknown (or of embarrassing yourself) keep you from trying a new sport that you might really like. Are there any sports you like playing with friends that you might wanna try on a more serious level? Any sports that make "working out" more fun to you? Any sports your friends already do so they could give you a few tips on them? Give it a try - you can always back out if you realize it isn't for you.

But also remember that you don't have to do something just because your friends and family want you to. If you're not athletic and aren't interested in anything beyond basic workouts to get fit, don't force it. Your talents could be better in a new club (an arts club, maybe?), a performing arts group, or a volunteer organization. The most important thing is getting involved in something - check out your options and find one that feels right for you!

MOD MOD MOD my boyfriend is a grade ahead of me and will be going into high school this year. he flirts with girls a lot but thats how he always has been but everyony has known we wer together. but i am woried when he goes to high school somegirl will take it the wrong way and i might get hurt. he isnt that kind of guy but thats what all my friends are telling me!

Hey girly,
Just be careful. The fact that you know he is this way will make it much easier for you to see what's going on. Keep an eye on him. If he starts to look like he is flirting with another girl and he is serious about it, then dump him.

MOD MOD MOD I met this really nice boy. I talk to him alot. I told my friend about him and she has a boyfriend already but I'm afraid she's going to steal him from me! What should I do if she does? She has before to a different guy I have liked too! What should I do? Thank you!

Hey girly,
If your bff already has a bf, then don't worry, chances are she isn't gonna steal him. If she does try to make moves, remind her that you really like him and that she already has a guy that will give her plenty of attention. Good Luck!
