Dear Confused in Louisiana
You should be proud of your values and ability to empathize. It is hard to listen to insensitive people who make racist comments are oblivious to others’ feelings. It is also hard to change such people. I commend you for trying and encourage you to continue pointing out that all people have the same range of emotions. If racists would take off their blinders, they would see there are good people and bad people of all colors. Maybe it will make an impression on your small-minded classmates to see that slurs or stupid jokes can lose the respect of someone as special as you.

POSTED IN bad friend, bullying 101, bust school stress, back to school, advice from Carol Weston
I know what it feels like, in 5th grade i dealt with racism at an all white school. For example one girl told me that if i changed my skin color everyone else would b happy. but u know people like that u can only pray for and say what u have to say and walk away.

Yeah, i know what this feels like. Im part indian so i get picked on a lot becasue even in the winter my skin is tan. One boy in particular calls me Fried rice. Fried because im brown and well you get the rest. I wish guys like this could see how mean they are being. Even if people dont let on it still hurts.

When they say " Why do you care?" I usually say " Because I also care about you and you're making a big a** out of yourself losing respect like that and being the smaller person. How about you think about how the other person feels because they're human like you and they have feelings." Saying cheesy things might get them to see your side of things it's okay, and if they don't getting the principal or your parents involved doesn't hurt because that's illegal in some states/ county's. So get people noticed!
