I love gymnastics, but 16 hours of training a week is too
much. I often miss out on things people my age normally get to do. My time is
so crunched I don’t always have enough time to do my homework or even shower.
My mom loves the sport and would die if I quit. I can’t miss practice because
it is expensive. When I tell my mom how I feel, she says she would have loved
to be as good as I am and that I am lucky.
Dear Lucky Gymnast,
You need to decide if you love, love, love gymnastics—or if
your mom does. If you’re good but not so off-the-charts that you could score a
life-changing medal or scholarship, consider setting new priorities. Say, “Mom,
I appreciate your support, but I have no downtime.” After a little time off,
you might find you miss the sport—or not. But you are not stuck. Can you talk
to your coach about this?
