Am I a late bloomer?

 
I was reading that you usually get your period around the same time your mom did. If that's true, I should have my period by now. I was wondering if that's normal not to get around the same time. Am I just a really late bloomer?

 

That is not necessarily true. The important thing to remember when it comes to periods is that EVERY girl is different and develops at a different rate. Some girls may get their periods around the same time their mothers did, and some will get it earlier or later. It’s not unusual for girls to get their first periods in their late teens. It’s really just up to Mother Nature!
 
Comparing your body to your mother’s, your aunt’s or your sister’s is silly when you think about it. When they mature earlier than you do, these comparisons can make you think that there must be something wrong with your, since your not following the schedule their bodies set. But , babe, you’ve gotta remember: There is no normal when it comes to puberty. A chat with your doctor can really help put your mind at ease…and make sure there really isn’t anything wrong with your bod.

Yeah my mom started at 16, and I started at 13. That is just meant as a guesstimate, and not always the time you will for sure start.

It isn't necessarily true about getting it the same time as your mom. My mom got hers at 15, my sister at 13 or 14, and
I'm 13 and haven't started it yet but I just started getting discharge.

I'm 12 years old and I'm flat chested. Im really nervous because all my friends are talking about their periods. they always secretly share pads. My mom said I should be happy that I dont have to go through what their going through,......but Im not sure. My mom had hers and 12, but the doctor said I'm probably wont have it for another couple of years. Am I normal?

Hey Prett Tee, it can be hard to predict when exactly one's period is coming. Since you've been having so much discharge, my guess is that it's on it's way. So get prepared now by reading about menstrual cycles on our period page. Hope this helps! Xoxo



So How long is it supposed to take for my period to start I'm 12 years old and I've had discharge since I was 11 so it says 6-18 months and it's been taking forever and anyways I don't feel comfy talking to my mom about it so I talk to the school nurse and she and my friends who have it give me advice. The next time you do have one of those mood swings and you say something emotional that you didn't mean, immediately apologize and tell him the truth - simply, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it. It's that time of the month, I'm just all moody." Guys don't wanna know all the details about periods...that'll explain it to him! Smile

Hi, I was the one who commented that my comments weren't showing up... hopefully this one does! Lol. Okay, so I was wondering if you could help me out and give your opinion on when I might get my first period. I am 12 1/2 years old and I have been growing boobs and pubic hair since I was 9.. my boobs are kinda small (32a) but I sort of have a lottt of hair lol, yeahh, akwardd. I am very small.. I am ___ pounds and 4'10" lol, but my grandma and a few other relatives are petite as well. My mom got her period when she was in 7th or 8th grade (I'm currently in 7th grade). I have also been getting discharge for a year now, and it feels wet and gross in my panties lol. A year ago, my doctor said I would probably get it in about 6 months to a year. I also have to shave my armpits. Oh, and my boobs are REALLY sore when I wake up in the morning lol and I don't wear a bra to bed or anything. When do you think I might get it?? You're definitely progressing normally through puberty and sound very healthy! Unfortunately though, none of us can exactly predict when you'll get your first period - not the mods, not your doctor. It could be within the next 6 months to one year like your doctor said, but some girls don't get it until they're 16! It's kinda a waiting game - I know, total bummer. Just make sure you read up on periods, stay prepared with a pad so you're not caught off guard, and most of all be patient Smile

i have only have discharge for 3 months, but i have all the other signs of a period.in the last three days i have at least 2 bad stomach aches. i get stomachaches sometimes if i'm stressed or have not have any breakfast that day, but it has been the weekend so none of those have happened.COULD IT BE PMS!?!?!?!?!?!

Hey Girl,

The good news is, you're right at the age when most girls get their period. The bad news is, there's no way to tell exactly when you're going to get it. The age when your mom got her period is a good indicator for when you may get yours, but as your sister's was earlier than your mom's, yours might be earlier, too. Discharge is a sure sign that your period is on its way, so it will probably be soon, but there's no way to be certain.

Hey chica,

Totally awkward - or so it seems. But actually, there are ways to do this without calling any attention to yourself! My favorite is the sweater/hoodie trick. If you're wearing a cardigan, take it off and carry it. Slip the pad inside the fabric, hidden from view. Then just head into the stall with your cardigan in your hand! Problem, solved Smile This also works with a hoodie or sweatshirt. If you're still wearing the sweatshirt and it has those big pockets/the pouch in front, slip the pad in there when you're at your locker.

MOD MOD MOD I'm 14 years old and I haven't gotten my period yet. I know that it often comes near to the time when your mom got it, and if thats true then I should have it around this time. I have had all of the discharge for about a year now and it seems like I have been having period symptoms every month since July. Is it possible that I have my period it just isn't showing up? Because I heard that if you do lots of exercise that sometimes it doesn't show up.

Hey girly, it's not unheard of for girls to get their periods when they're 18, so don't worry too much. You should consult with your doctor to see if he/she can provide a better explanation.

I think I got my period! I went to the bathroom and there was this light brown wet stuff in my undies. It wasn't gloopy or gunky just... wet. Is this my period? How will my mom understand when it is just brown, and believe me when I say it's my period? It's like a really light brown. Did I just not wipe enough?

It definitely sounds like the beginning of your period. Normally on the first day of your period, it's lighter and brownish/pinkish before getting heavier and turning red. Keep an eye on it and see if it gets heavier. But don't worry - mom will understand because everyone's period is like this!

MOD! I take trampolining classes and there is loooaddss of jumping and spinning around and upside down... will I be okay to do it on my period? I don't use tampons (yet) and I'm worried about more blood than usual coming out and leaking...!

Mod I got my period this summer, and school has started. I absolutely refuse to where a purse, and our lockers are on the other end of the school, so I can't hide any pads in there. Plus, we cant carry backpacks. What should I do?

Hey girly! Some girls are just late bloomers, in the period department. If you're super active or athletic, that could delay your period. I'd be honest with your mom about it. She'll understand. After all, she's been there and knows how you feel. Maybe mention that you've been talking about it with your friends, and you haven't gotten your period yet. Then, ask her when she first got hers.

Hey girlie,

It's super normal for periods to be really irregular at first, especially right after your first period. Wait it out a lil more and be prepared with a pad wherever you go, just in case. Personally, if I didn't get it for the second time after about 4 months, I would call my doctor just to ask him what's the deal. But he/she is probably not going to be able to tell you much more than "just be patient" Smile

MOD MOD MOD!!!! I just got my period and im only 11 2/3. My mom didn't get hers until she was 13 (but this isn't what im worried about). Through my period and before and after, I wasn't cramping, craving, emotional, or any more edgy than usual. I asked my mom and she said that she had very strong PMS. I don't have any sisters (only two bros) and my gramma doesn't have her period anymore (confusing!!!). Whar happened to my PMS? Also on the 27 it will have been a month after. Still no PMS!!!!!!!

 

Hey girl, you have nothing to worry about. Periods are different for every girl. There are some girls that it hurts so bad they have to stay home from school, girls that don't feel anything at all, and everything in between. Consider yourself lucky that your not feeling any PMS!

so I've noticed for the past 3 or 4 months these small red spots in my underwear With heavy discharge. usually the dots last for 2-5 days, but this time I only saw them for one day. plus for the past 3 days I've been experiencing minor cramps and I RARELY get zits, but I have now I have 2! I don't really think this is my period cuz it's not an actual flow, but is it like a "blueprint" for my period? thanks so much!!!

This could definitely be a clue that your full period will be starting soon! Since it's been going on for so long though without an actual "flow," I'd prob check in with my doctor just to make sure everything was fine. Spotting with discharge is totally normal, but at least he/she could give ya more professional advice on what's happening Smile

Bras are fine on delicates but, if you're concerned, using it on hand wash will still clean it! Try looking at the tags on your clothes for more info <3

hey is delicates like underwear and bras and stuff? I'm washing my clothes right now with my bras, clothes, underwear, and my shoes. I put it on delicates so my bras dont stretch out. Hey babe,

Yep, you got it - "delicates" refers to panties, bras, nighties, anything made from more delicate material that the washer would need to be careful with. It should be safe to wash bras on the delicates setting since it treats clothes very gingerly... but usually I just wash my bras in the sink with bar soap and my hands, just in case!

Its the Different stage with friends that is SO TOUGH!

We just had a discussion about this, my friends and I all agree that its so tough because we all have these things happening at different times. Its like why am I not developing there like my friend, why did my good friend pass me up in height and in boob size, and why do you shave and I dont. It just makes its difficult because we all are going through this but we are just at slightly different stages.

The worst is when friends cant understand why you are so interested in your bf or guys in general. Some of my friends still dont understand it but I tell them when it hits you you will be just like me and some of our other friends.

This could be spotting or it could be the first lighter days of your period. The flow of your very first period varies from person to person - it could be super light or it could be normal (light to heavy to light again). Since you're going to a party, pack a pad in your purse just in case and wear a pantyliner if it makes you feel more secure Smile

So I was browsing through comments on a video about periods (bubzbeauty) and I came across a really saddening comment. One girl said that her fallopian tubes are misshapen or something so she doesn't get periods and she can't have children. A couple other people said that too. How common is it that girls are born without reproductive organs? And how do you know if you are? I haven't had my period yet, my doctor said I'm a late bloomer. But... I just want to have children and I'm afraid that it might happen to me!

It has nothing to do with when your mother got it- because even though I don't know when my grandmother got it, one of my aunts got it in 3rd grade (so she was 8...I think- she has a l8 June birthday), but my mom didn't get hers until she was a junior in high school. I got mine in 8th grade right around Halloween. So that proves that genetics play a very small role in your period- or looking at in a convoluted way, causes it, because of our chromosomes (X vs Y).

lol sooooo not true my mom was 14 almost 15, my sis was rite bout to turn 13 wen she got it, and they ddint get warning signs no discharge cramps or anything, and i guess im the lucky one cuz i get all the signs and still no period, the only real way u can tell if ur gonna get it soon is if u either get spotting or go to the gynocologist, but thts kinda silly to do cuz it wood probly be really uncomfortable wen u know ur eventually gonna get it, but im almost positive drinking alot of green tea makes u get it rlly soon, so i guess u cood try it if u want it tht bad

MOD MOD MOD MOD! My period is super heavy this week, and tomorrow I'm going to an amusement park with 20 people. We're riding in a 22 passenger van, so I can't change my tampon during the ride. Any suggestions on how to deal? Especially with my bad cramps. THANKS!

   If you change your tampon right before the ride and then right when you get to the park, you should be fine. And to deal with the cramps, bring some ibuprofen with you. x0x0

I dont think thats true .. I got my period about 2 months after I turned 13 and my mom got her period when she was 9. Besides, dont rush for your period ... Its not that great. Lol Smile

That is so not true because my mom got her period when she was fourteen ,my sister got hers when she was thirteen and I got mine on my 12th birthday so its really up to how fast your body matures.

Hey ally 67 you should prepare a locker emergency kit with a pair of underwear pantiliners pads and tampons. You could put them in your bookbag, in a makeup bag, or in a pencil case so that it is not too obvious. Hope this helps! Smile

so today i used a super tampon. After I took it out, my flow was very light. It's been almost two hours and my flow is still very light(normally it is alot heavier if I only use pads) this is my first time really using tampons. please respond soon.




Hey girl, I wouldn't worry too much for now. If the tampon isn't hurting you/painful when it comes out, chances are you applied it correctly.

Hey girl, unfortunately not really. The best way to handle PMS is to try to control your feelings and realize their source: hormones. You'll learn to deal with them better as you get more used to them.

I am a late bloomer, my mom got her period when she was 11, and I didnt get mine until I was 14. Its totally normal for it to be different, but its also totally common for you to get it at the same age!

We all go through puberty at different times, before I got my period I remember being anxious and kind of jealous at my friends who went through it at 10 and 11 and also happy that I didnt have it yet. There are good and bad things about being a late bloomer. You dont have to worry about dealing with periods, you dont have to deal with certain thoughts about guys, you dont have to worry about shaving but you do have to be concerned about not having the chest like friends and not being attracted to guys.

This doesnt really have to do with me being a "late Bloomer" But yesterday I had Volleyball Camp and I got really tired all of a sudden and then felt like I was about to vomit and I told the coach. She said I looked a bit pale and so my mom came to pick me up. Today I had Volleyball camp again and the same thing happened except my mom did not come to pick me up. Instead I had to stay for another 2 or 3 hours waiting on a bench watching everyone else. Frown The whole time I was on my period so I was wondering if being on your period slow down your exercising ability? Does it make you more tired? I also got my shots yesterday so that may be the cause... Please help I dont want to feel like this again... I have the rest of the week for camp too.

I've had all the PMS symptoms 'teasing' me for a year now. Back aches, headaches, white thick discharge, cramping, etc... I also can't really go to the doctor because last year in November I got a lot of brownish reddish stuff and I told my mom I had my period but it only happened that one time, so she thinks I have been getting my period every month. I feel really guilty and I'm too embarassed to tell her that I haven't gotten it since. Do you have any idea why I haven't gotten my period even though I have had PMS symptoms for a year? Thanks! (P.S. When I got the brownish reddish stuff it only happened once, and it didn't keep going that day so it may have been just heavy spotting)




I can't really say, your best bet would be to ask your doctor, explaining that you haven't gotten your period since the last incident

Hey girl. It sounds like the begining of a period, which can be pretty light. Period blood can range from bright red to dark brown. The more brown looking it is the older the lining that is clearing out. If it doesn't turn into a regular flow in a few days then it may be discharge. Read these for more info:
