We Tried It: Beachy waves to sport all fall

Summer’s almost over, sadly, and we’re totally bummed to ditch the sun, sand and sea for serious studying at school. But one of the best parts of the beach you can drag out a bit longer? The naturally undone yet absolutely gorgeous waves ya get by splashing in the sea.

So when we heard about Pravana’s The Beach Wave Control Mist, we had to give it a go. Pravana’s new product claims to produce the same effortless effect with just a spritz, plus added sun protection as a sweet bonus – we crossed our fingers and hoped for boardwalk locks.

...And we weren’t disappointed!  The secret is in the natural ingredients -- a formula of wheat, silk and keratin amino acids adds flexibility (read: no hairspray helmet head!). We adored how easy it was to spray, tousle and go. Voila! Instant beach babe.

This is one beach spray we’ll hold onto long past Labor Day.

Keratin is actually damaging to hair, and I dont think it can be used on colored hair-like mine. Any alternatives?
P.s. today I'm getting a Pravana Perfection treatment to cut the poof and the frizzies and make my hair straight. Anything that would work with that?

Hey chica, there are lots of anti-frizz serums you can use that should help keep the poof down. Look a few up - there are some that work on both dry and wet hair, so you can use them any time.

The thing is... my hair is WAAYY curly!! :p it gets on my nerves! how can i make it more manageable. i understand if you dont have an answer. Smile my hair is curzy!

Hey girl,

Unfortunately I don't have much hair myself, but what if you got it layered so it would be less thick? It would be more manageable that way. You could also go to a beauty store or salon and ask their opinion, because the pros will have tons of advice to help you out!

MOD,
how do i get rid of all the hair on my stomach? ( its dark and theres more then like the usual peach fuzz.)

Hey girl,

First off, DEFINITELY do not shave! It'll look weird, plus make it stubbly and coarse when it grows back... not what you want. If it's really noticeable and it makes you feel uncomfortable, you could talk to mom or dad about getting it lightened at a salon. That's the only thing that could make it look a bit less noticeable <3

how do you curl your hair without using a curling iron or those roller things?like is there anyway you could do something whole your hair is wet or something? and also my mom says im not agressive enough to play soccer but i want to how can i train to become better?thnxSmile

Hey girl,

You could try braiding your hair while it's damp, then unbraiding it the next morning to get some curls or waves! The curling iron is the easiest thing to use, but braids are worth a try Smile And you don't have to be an aggressive person to play a sport - you just have to be dedicated and willing to work hard! Try talking to an older girl on the team or the soccer coach at your school. Ask questions about joining the team, training, try outs, practices, etc. That way, you can prepare! <3

I have long, thick, naturally and stubbornly straight frizz-free hair that does not have much natural wave or texture to it. It falls about 5 inches below my shoulder. My hair cut used to be chin-length side bangs and subtle layers on both sides. I just got a new hair cut today that took 1 inch off my bangs and added lots of layers everywhere. It's kinda like a rocker-chic haircut. I want to bring out my layers more than what the natural bend on the ends are, so what sea salt spray and other products would you reccomend? Sorry the message is so long and thanks in advance! Smile

Hey girlie,

It would probably be more effective to use a pomade if you're looking for that layered look. You can get some on your fingertips and work it through sections of your hair to define them, then work on the ends to flip them up/out/down and get a shaggy, edgy look! Loooove Garnier Fructis Fiber Gum Putty! Or anything from the Bedhead line Smile

I really want a crimping iron, but i cant find them anywhere, accept for chatters, and they're around 100$ there. How do i make my hair crimped but not frizzy?

Do you have a Target or Walmart near you? How about a drugstore like Walgreens or Rite Aid? You could even shop online (drugstore.com has a lot of options) and have it shipped to you! Make sure you condition your hair so it's hydrated, then while it's damp use a heat protectant spray to mist the hair and prep it. Then blow dry it straight - you're all set to crimp! Separate your hair into a three-inch section, spritz it with hair spray for good hold, then crimp. Don't leave it on the heat too long so it doesn't fry - it'll get frizzy if you let it do that.

MOD! I am African American, so that means I have kinky hair. Wherever I look, I can't find any hair tips or styles that work for me. I love GL but I can't do any of the things here. I don't feel comfortable in my natural hair, so my mom takes me to the salon to get "extensions" but they aren't really, they're just braids. I hate how they are only in individual strands and not just all together and "flowy" like someone who's not African American's hair might be. I've always wanted a weave, but my mom won't let me get one!!! She has one and even my 14 year old cousin got one! And she's only a year older than me!! I know we are supposed to be happy with how we look, and for the most part, i am, but out of my thighs, stomach and hair, my hair is the biggest issue. My mom sometimes perms my hair, but it turns kinky after 2 days and it takes forever to do in the morning. When I am older, for sure I am going to get a weave, but what can I do now???

Hey girly, I'm Black too and have the same textured hair, so I can understand. Since all you can get is braids right now, don't get them braided all the way. There are individuals you can get where they only braid a little bit of your hair so the bottom is out, and it looks like weave. Check out these links and take pics into your hairdresser so they'll do your hair the way you want. I used to get braids when I was younger, and they really helped my hair grow. After my mom took my braids out, my hair was really long, thick and healthy. So once you get older you probably won't need a weave. Hope this helps!!!! Smile Smile

Do you have any hair ideas or products that can help a girl with very straight brown hair. My hair has a tough time holding a curl. Please help.

Hey babe,

Ugh, totally feel ya on this one - my hair is stick straight! Sometimes what works for me though is to shower at night and work in a curl mousse as my hair is drying. When it's almost 100% dry, I use foam curlers to roll small pieces of hair up in a curl. I sleep in it all night, then wake up and take the curlers out. Use a hairbrush/comb to work out the tight curls to whatever type of "wave" you're going for, then use hairspray to secure the look. It won't last ALL day, but it's worth it to add some pizzazz to your look once in a while! Smile

The magazine should do a post on how to do basic hair styles. There should be: straightening hair, curling hair, scrunching hair, etc. Even though a lot of people would already know, it would be helpful to many.

Hey, I'm having minor boy problem issues here. So there's this boy that I've always liked for about 2 years. We've talked a little bit and he knows who I am and everything- but he acts like he doesn't! My friend knows him and whenever my name is brought up he acts like he doesn't know me at all and it's really frustrating. Now we're in a different school and he's always been pretty popular and so I know other girls like him and everything because he's really cute and nice. He'll flirt with someone right in front of me. We always make eye contact in the halls and stuff but I just don't know what to do. Please help me!! I'd really appreciate it.

If you guys talk, ask him what's his deal.

Hey girl,

It's growing, I promise! Sometimes getting a trim can rejuvenate your hair a little and make it seem to grow faster. It definitely keeps it healthier, which is important! Just make sure you wash and condition it every one or two days to keep it clean and as healthy as possible Smile

~MOD~I have think, wavy-straight hair that currently almost reaches the small of my back. It's light brown with natural blonde highlights, and I have bangs that reach my upper lip. I've been thinking about getting my hair cut in layers and I was wondering what tis you think I should use for when I'm in the salon when I'm asing for the cut. Every time I've gone in I've gotten a so-so cut, and this time this year I want it to be amazing for the first time! Thank you so much! <3 all the mods!

Hey chica,

Sounds super cute!! Try getting to a salon a little bit ahead of your appointment so you can look in their hair magazines. Find a cut that is similar to what you were thinking of (or you could even Google image celebs with layered haircuts if you know of a certain celeb who had a great haircut), then show that to your hairdresser. Remember that your hair is a different type and texture most likely so it won't look EXACTLY the same, but this gives your hairdresser a great example!

MOD! Hey(: I'm currently a brunette. I tried dying my hair ash blonde at home on June 25th, but my hair pretty much stayed the same color, it just got a teensy bit lighter. Then six weeks later, I tried using Sun-In, which DID make a difference, but I don't have the blonde I want. I started using the Sun-In last Friday, and I used it everyday, but my last application was Tuesday or Wednesday. Is it safe to dye my hair again before school starts (on August 30th) or should I wait until either Labor Day or my next haircut? Thank you(:

Hey girly,
If I were you, I would wait. You don't want to put too many chemicals in your hair at once.

hey I really want to get this Pravana's beach wave control mist but I can't seem to find it anywhere! I don't want to buy it over the internet so do you know of any actual stores that sell it? Thanks! Smile

I just tried looking around for you, but I can't find it either  The salon's shop has a salon locator, if you wanted to see if you could buy from them

modmodmodmod i have like SUPER thick hair! my hair can only hold a curl for three hours (my hair is naturally straight) it is like at the bottom of my armpits but it holds a wave really good do you have any cute ideas that i could try for school? it would have to be something i could do in less than 15-30 minutes

Hey girl,

Wearing it down with a wave would be really cute, and you could also try wearing it half-up half-down. x0x0

MOD. Would this Pravana’s The Beach Wave Control Mist work in fine straight hair, or do you need some curl or wave? My hair never does anything, and I can't use heat since it's too fine. If this wouldn't work do you have any styling suggestions?

Hey girl. I'm not sure. I think you should talk to a stylist or try diff products.

MOD MOD MOD MOD Ok so im a big jokster and love having a good time and messing around and being funny....but i know when enough is enough and when its time to stop, but for some reason most of the time some of my friends jusy put me down for trying to be funny and have a good time. they are just to serious. ive told them that they are boring sometimes and need to be a little carefree every once in a while, but they dont listen and juist roll their eyes. My friends and fam say everyone loves me and its hard not to, but i wonder sometimes if they just say that and i am really just making a fool of myself. I mean i have alota friends and alota guys like me...so do you think my friends are wrong and should be more carefree and enjoy childhood whil we have it, or im wrong and should be more serious, though i do know when to be serious and stop the jokes. sorry this kinda goes with my prev post

Hey girl. I don't think you need to be more serious unless you are joking at inappropriate times. Maybe try asking your friends to do fun things instead of telling them that they are being boring. I'm sure it's no fun to hear that. I would trust would when people say that everyone likes you. I don't think you are in danger of falling into a bad crowd if you keep your standards high and think before you act. As far as your temper goes, I would try leaving a situation rather than blowing up and if you can't just focusing on your breathing. The same goes for avoiding drama. Think before you spread the latest gossip and try to be kind to everyone. Nothing is better than killing em with kindness! Try to fix your friendships if that is what you want. Just remember it is way easier to have friends than enemies.

MOD MOD MOD wait so you just spray Pravana's The Beach Wave Control Mist on your hair and becomes beach waves??? How long does it take for the waves to form and where do u get this mist??

Hey babe. It looks like you can get that particular spray on amazon or you can find something similar at the drugstore. You can either blow dry or air dry, which will take around the same time it usually does. It may take a few tries to get the hang of this because all hair is different. Follow the directions on the bottle.

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD! I can't get the spray (I live in China...) So do you think I could use real sea water? Get it from the beach in a spray bottle? Will that work? And maybe then twist my hair into a bun? Thanks!

Hey babe. No need to go to the sea (you might get icky things along with your salt water). Get a clean spray bottle from a drugstore, put in 8 oz of water (I did a conversion and it looks like this is about 236 ml), and 1 tsp water. You might want to add a lil conditioner the mix and hair gel. Experiment with what works for your hair.

MOD MOD MOD: My cousins, aunt,& uncle just left this morning to go back home and I can't stop crying! We're going to Skype tonight but they live in the east and live in the west so it's not I get to see them a lot, normally only once a year. I don't want to stop crying because it's not healthy to hold my sadness in,but what should I do in order to not miss them so much?

Hey girly,
You need to distract yourself and keep yourself busy. Maybe you can make plans with friends or read a book.

MODMODMOD!!! (sry, i know that this isn't in the right catagory, I just didn't know where else to put this) 1. how do you know that you need and underwire bra? 2. i know what push up bras are and everything, but is their a really big difference between t-shirt bras and push up bras? are they just as comfortable? thx!

Hey girly,
An underwire bra is usually for bigger sizes that need more support, usually around the C size. As for the diff between t-shirt bras and pushup bras, it all depends for different styles and types. Try both on and see what you think.
