My parents have always argued, but in the last few
months, things seem to be getting worse. They are constantly fighting, and
nothing I do seems to help. How can I keep my family together?
I’m sorry you’re going through this, girlie. It’s never easy
when anyone you love fights, but it’s particularly hard when it feels like
family life as you know it is at stake. Though things might be rough right now,
there are a couple of things you can do.
Stay out of it
Whatever is causing your parents to argue, always remember
that you aren’t the problem. You know
how when two of your friends get mad at each other? Instead of picking sides,
it’s always better to stay out of the middle and keep yourself neutral. The
same is true for family feuds. I know it’s tempting to try to step in and end
the argument, but you have to realize that that isn’t up to you. This is your
parents’ relationship, and they have to be the ones to sort out their problems.
Heed the arguments
Sometimes our ‘rents argue because they’re stressed out and
they need an outlet for their worries and fears. If Mom and Dad are battling
over the household budget, do your best to keep spending to a minimum. If
they’re warring over things like who’s cooking dinner or cleaning the house,
pitch in and do what you can to help out. Remember, it’s your home, too!
Talk to your buds
‘Fessing up to family problems can be embarrassing. Why?
Because it seems like all of your friends have perfect families. Wanna know a
secret? Nobody’s family is perfect. If you bite the bullet and spill your
concerns to a bud, I bet she’ll open up about her own problems at home. Talking
it out can strengthen your relationship with your besties and take some of the
emotional weight off your shoulders.
Stay strong, sweetie!
